Acidanthera bicolor - Peacock Orchid
List of files and visuals associated with this text. Peacock orchid is related to the gladiolus, not orchids. The plant requires a longer growing season than gladiolus. Planting in large groups is most effective and flowers are good for cutting. A sunny growing area with light well- drained soil is best. Water generously except when plants flower or after blooming. The plants grow 18 to 30 inches tall and bloom in late summer and early fall. Plant corms three inches deep and six inches apart in the spring. Dig and clean the corms in the fall after the foliage matures. Store the corms in dry sand at temperatures above 60 degrees.

The Jewel Box Garden
By Thomas Hobbs
An excerpt:
"Make sure your oasis-to-be is not sabotoged by a clinical white paint job. Apartment dwellers and townhouse gardeners may have to disguise rather than repaint. Clever use of trellises, matchstick blinds, bamboo fencing and strategically placed plants can transform a prison cell, let alone a balcony. A bit of "set-dee" is crucial to all forms of gardening. "

Dividing and repotting orchids Dividing and repotting orchids If your orchids are thriving there is a risk that they can become pot-bound, with their tentacle-like roots resembling something like an overcrowded snake pit. If you are not used to orchids, don't let the overhanging roots worry you; these are aerial roots and don't necessarily mean the plant is pot-bound. Pseudobulbs One of the most popular and easy-to-care-for species of orchids is cymbidiums. Cymbidiums and many other orchids produce pseudobulbs from which new growth emerges. The pseudobulbs act as storage organs for water and nutrients, and can help the plant survive drought. Phalaenopsis and other species that do not produce pseudobulbs can also be divided, but it is easier if you can have the pseudobulbs to guide you. When to divide and repot If your orchid is looking too big for its pot and you can spot three or more pseudobulbs, it may be a good idea to repot, but always repot at the beginning of a new growth cycle. Some growers say never to divide with less than four pseudobulbs because it can inhibit flowering. Growth cycles can vary even within one species, so you may wish to consult a specialist book or garden centre. For cymbidiums the best time is every two years in the spring, after flowering.

Like this page? Send it to a friend! Gardening Plants Plant Profiles ... Orchidaceae, The orchid family Orchidaceae, The orchid family A beginner coming to the world of orchids may feel there is a bewildering number of species, varieties and hybrids, and may be nervous about their reputation of being difficult to grow and care for. Although many plants do require expert care, there is no reason to be put off; everyone can grow and look after orchids. It is simply a matter of paying attention to the individual requirements of each plant. The sheer volume of Orchidaceae , possibly the largest family of flowering plants, can be a little confusing at first. It does not take long however before you can enjoy the satisfaction of distinguishing between Paphiopedilum and Cymbidium. General facts The orchid family includes nearly 900 genera, somewhere between 20,000 and 30,000 species and over 70,000 hybrids or cultivars. The largest number of orchids, and often the most popular, come from Asia. This is the home of the Paphiopedilum, the striking lady slipper orchid. South America is also especially rich in wild orchids, but really they can be found in any conditions almost anywhere except the polar regions.
