These orangish-red-haired apes have long arms and curved hands and feet, which they put to good use when traversing the treetops. Older orangutans usually move through the trees on all fours, while young ones often brachiate, or swing hand over hand. Males have longer hair than females and disc-like cheek pads. Both sexes have throat pouches that make their calls resonate through the forest. The males' pouches are more developed. Orangutans crush tough foliage and hard-shelled nuts with their strong teeth and jaws. Two subspecies exist: P. p. pygmaeus

Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary
A visit to the Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary will allow you to come in close contact with the remarkable "man of the forest". The orangutan is found only in the Indonesian islands of Borneo and Sumatra, almost exclusively in lowland rainforest areas. Orangutans are so finely adapted to the rainforests that they are unable to adapt well to any other habitat. One of the world's largest primates, it is second only to the gorilla in size. The Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary is set in 15 square miles of beautiful virgin rainforest. It began in 1964 to help once captive orangutans learn to fend for themselves in the wild. It is interesting and exciting to watch these large red apes. They are astonishing gentle, highly intelligent and will gaze at you with almost disconcerting frankness.

SIGNONSANDIEGO NEWS SERVICES 4:14 p.m. March 10, 2004 The male infant was born late Friday afternoon to 17-year-old, first-time mom "Indah" in her off-exhibit bedroom. "This birth is very significant for the San Diego Zoo and the critically endangered Sumatran orangutan population," said Kim Livingstone, the zoo's lead animal keeper. "We were hoping that Indah would get pregnant, and we're very excited to now have a healthy male newborn," she said. Caregivers are keeping a close eye on the pair to make sure the baby is healthy, nursing and being cared for properly by his mom, zoo officials said. Indah and her unnamed infant made their public debut in the 8,400-square- foot "Absolutely Apes" exhibit they share with several other apes. The zoo has teamed with America Online, whose members will select the name of the baby orangutan from five different Sumatran names. Potential names include "Pasti," which means "to be certain or definite"; "Suka," which means "to be fond of"; "Merduka," which means "independent and free"; "Gembria," which means "to be glad and cheerful"; or "Cinta," which means "love and affection."

  • The orang-utan is literally a "man of the woods", also called Mawas ( pongo pygmaeus ). It is a great ape with long reddish hair, and spends its time mostly moving about in the trees and less on the ground. Orang-utans live in the wet and hot forests of Sumatera and Kalimantan(Borneo). Kalimantan orang utans are red brown, while their Sumatran cousins are paler, and more gingerly color. Kalimantan orang utans also have coarser hair.
The mature male has fleshy cheekpads and a penduluos throat pouch, and his voice can be heard up to several kilometers away. His height reaches 125 cm standing tall, and weighs up to 110 kg. The female is about half in weight.
Orang utans have a varied diet of fruit, bark, leaves, and insects like ants, termites, and bees. They feed by moving in the canopy but the males freguently come to the ground to travel longer distances. However, the female of the species virtually never leave the trees. These creatures live a nomadic lifestyle depending on food availability. They have a solitary lifestyle unlike other species of monkeys or apes that live in groups.
The current number of orang utans left in the wild is estimated at between 20,000 and 27,000 (based on the latest survey comparisons between orangutan researchers in Sumatra in 1993). They are an endangered species, and are the only big ape found in Asia.

    Orangutans: Just Hangin' On Home
    Introduction
Saving Orangutans Orangutan I.Q. Orangutan Tools Resources Orangutans in the wild are using tools. In 1994, Carel van Schaik of Duke University became the first anthropologist to document the use of tools among wild orangutans. His study investigated orangutans in the swampy Gunung Leuser National Park, in the northwest corner of Sumatra, who were developing implements to help themselves eat. Here, ravines, knee-deep water, and fish leeches keep out loggers , leaving the orangutans relatively undisturbed. The swamp is densely packed with orangutans that van Schaik describes as gregarious and extremely tolerant of each other an unusual arrangement for these apes, who are usually solitary. "The reason that tolerance is important is that we assume that the critical factor for using tools is the ability to learn it from others," van Schaik explains. "Everybody is using tools, and everybody has the chance to observe it, so it is a social behavior." Orangutans in captivity often use tools, but no one before van Schaik had observed this behavior in wild populations. Wild orangutans on the nearby island of Borneo have not developed tool use, perhaps because they are more sparsely distributed throughout the forest.

ORANG-UTAN The islands of Borneo, Sumatra and Java, together with the Malay Peninsula stand on a shallow submarine continental extension called 'The Sunda Shelf'. These islands are inhabited by faunas which have much in common, but that of Borneo is distinctive, with about 40 mammals that are endemic; i.e. they exist nowhere else in the world. The island of Borneo is in the Malay Archipelago, southeast of the Malay Peninsula and southwest of the Philippine Islands. The population is 10,184,443 (1984 est.).
It is divided into four political regions: Kalimantan, the largest, is Indonesian; SABAH (North Borneo) and SARAWAK are part of Malaysia; and tiny BRUNEI, formerly a British protectorate, gained independence in 1984.
Borneo, with a length of 1,336 km (830 mi) and a maximum width of about 965 km (600 mi), is the third largest island in the world and lies across the equator in Southeast Asia. Its area is more than 743,107sq km (286,914 sq mi).
Borneo is mountainous and thick with rain forest. In the northeast, the mountains reach their greatest height; among these, Mount Kinabalu rises 4,101 m (13,455 ft). A long ridge of mountains also covers the central part of Borneo.

Wildlife News Search WWF-UK WWF-UK Wildlife Endangered species > Orang-utans Friday 11 June 2004 Endangered species Barn Owl Bears Big Cats Birds of prey ... Environmental threats Orang-utans Background Current threats What WWF is doing Background Orang-utans live on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra in South-east Asia and are the only great apes found outside Africa. The populations on the two islands have been separate for more than a million years, and scientists now consider them as distinct sub-species: the Sumatran orang-utan and the Bornean orang-utan.
Orang-utans spend most of their time in the treetops of the rainforests - in fact the name orang-utan means "person of the forest". They pass from tree to tree by climbing or swinging. Their strong arms stretch out longer than their bodies (up to 2.1m across) and allow them to move about in the rainforest canopy with ease, or to hang from branches eating fruit and leaves. When climbing, orang-utans use all four limbs - their big toes are opposable (like a human's thumbs) so they can grip branches with their feet as well as their hands. On the ground, orang-utans can stand upright, but they walk on all fours.
They are active during the day, and at night the females and young males sleep in nests which they build in the trees each evening. Due to their heaviness, mature males often sleep on the forest floor.
