MORPHOLOGY:
The average body mass for an adult male orang-utan is around 86 kilograms, and for the female it is around 38 kilograms. There is a high degree of sexual dimorphism in this species and it may be males are larger because of male-male competition for females, large males displace small males for access to females for mating (Rodman and Mitani, 1987). Pelage color ranges from reddish-orange to black. This species has a relatively short thumb. Males have flaps of fatty tissue on both sides of the face, and these develop in adulthood after the first mating. Males have throat sacs. The molars have thick enamel and low, flat cusps and have surfaces that are crenulated occlusally (Fleagle, 1988).
RANGE:
The orang-utan is found in the countries of Brunei, Indonesia, and Malaysia on the islands of Sumatra and Borneo. This species lives in tropical primary rainforests, swamp forests, and montane forests up to 2000 meters.
ECOLOGY:
The orang-utan is primarily a frugivorous species, although it also eats insects, small vertebrates, leaves, bark, and pith are also consumed. Among the most consumed fruits are: mangoes, rambutan, jackfruit, figs, and durian, which is a thick-shelled fruit that requires much strength to open. To supplement the diet for minerals, the orang-utan consumes soil. Water is obtained from tree holes by dipping the hand in and sucking up the water off of the hand. This is an arboreal and diurnal species. Each night this species constructs a nest made of branches and leaves in the trees up to 24 meters.

Orangutan

Orangutan Groups. Orangutans are the largest arboreal ape. They are found only in Sumatra and Borneo. Orangutans are in grave danger of extinction because their rainforest habitat is being converted for human use - the biggest threat is pemanent agriculture in the form of palm oil plantations and more recently illegal logging within protected areas. Ancient ape found in orangutan's homeland
Ten-million-year-old fossil teeth turn up in Thailand.
6 March 2003 JOHN WHITFIELD The orangutan: the only great ape with a known fossil record. An ancient relative of the orangutan has been discovered in Thailand. The species is the first fossil ape unearthed in the area where orangutans live today. Only teeth have been found so far. These bear an "amazing resemblance" to orangutan teeth, says the fossil's discoverer, Jean-Jacques Jaeger of the University of Montpellier, France. "It's more similar [to orangutans] than any other fossil ape," he enthuses. Like the orangutan, the newly discovered species, named Lufengpithecus chiangmuanensis by Jaeger and his colleagues , probably weighed about 70 kilograms. It lived in the tropical forests of northern Thailand between 10 and 13.5 million years ago. The finding opens a window onto new times and places in the apes' paltry fossil record, says palaeontologist Peter Andrews of the Natural History Museum in London. "This is just the beginning," he says. "There will be lots of species all over Southeast Asia." But Lufengpithecus is almost certainly not an ancestor of the orangutan. It joins a group of fossil apes that ranged from Europe to China around 10 million years ago. Researchers have little idea about how they were related to one another.

E-mail this story Posted on: Tuesday, January 27, 2004 Ranch drops plan for orangutan By Curtis Lum Advertiser Staff Writer It's back to the drawing board for the owners of Rusti the orangutan as they attempt to find a permanent home for the 23-year-old orangutan. Rusti the orangutan, who has been living at the Honolulu Zoo for about six years, won't be getting a new home at Kualoa Ranch. John Morgan, president of the ranch, says building a sanctuary for the ape is no longer feasible. Rusti has been housed "temporarily" at the Honolulu Zoo for about six years while his owner, Orangutan Foundation International, looked for a site to build a sanctuary. A plan to move Rusti to the Big Island fell through, and now a second proposal to build a special cage at Kualoa Ranch in Windward O'ahu is dead. The plan was opposed by animal-rights groups, which wanted Rusti sent to a sanctuary in Florida. The groups also argued that Kualoa Ranch would need a special city permit to house an orangutan.

Who lives high in the treetops, rarely comes to the ground, and sleeps in a nest? No, it's not a bird, but one of your closest relatives in the animal kingdomthe orangutan of Sumatra and Borneo, who shares 96.4 percent of the same genetic make-up as humans.
These peaceful, red-haired primates spend their days chowing down on fruit, leaves and flowers from trees, along with any stray insects that might be hidden among the foliage. Mom and baby orangs keep busy grooming each other, and then it's early to bed at sunset in a nest of branches.
Because they're larger, the older males are more comfy sleeping on the ground. At close to 200 pounds, they are not only physically bigger than the females, but have different facial features, too. Adult male orangutans have fat, fleshy cheek pads, and moustaches and beards. (But no, they don't have to shave!)

And St. Louis Zoo officials are uncertain who the father is. "Needless to say, we have a lot of unanswered questions," primate curator Ingrid Porton said. "It's a little embarrassing, I have to admit." Diligent about trying to prevent overcrowding and inbreeding, zookeepers have been giving 35-year-old Merah a daily birth control pill mixed into yogurt and honey. Porton suspects the mixture either spilled or was swiped by her eight-year-old son Sugi. The how is less important than the who, however. Scientists hope the father is 40-year-old Junior, a previous mate with great genes. They concede it could be Sugi, Merah and Junior's son. Merah has had liaisons with both.
