As a fan of Terry Pratchett I have developed an affection for the Orangutan (or people of the forest).
"the orangutan is the sad heap of half deflated inner-tubes you hurry past on the way to the rather more out-going chimpanzees and gorillas." - Terry Pratchett "you are accosted by a red demon with a face like a surprised coconut" - Terry Pratchett A lot of people ignore the Orangutan in order to see the more active apes, only in it's native Borneo can you see the real beauty of this long armed ape. Due to large scale de-forestation they are an endangered species, there are only around 20000 Orangutan's left in the world. Orangutans are the largest aboreal (tree dwelling) animals in the world. They primarily eat fruit but also leaves, flowers, bark and insects such as termites and butterfly larvae. They are unique among primates as they live in semi-solitary social groups. The most stable group is mother and offspring. They are long lived animals reaching ages of up to 50 years or more. T HE L INKS

ROADS THROUGH RAINFOREST THREATEN OUR CULTURED COUSINS
Controversial plan will fragment habitat for orangutans and other endangered species on Sumatra.
A paper in the January 3, 2003 issue of the journal Science shows that orangutans have cultures. Like humans and chimpanzees, orangutans learn some behaviors from others of their species, leading to behavioral differences between populations. Scientists believe that research on wild great apes will increase our understanding of the origins of culture in humans. Conservationists are realizing that, for great apes and other species capable of culture, the loss of any population is a loss of both cultural and biological diversity. Two populations of orangutans described in the Science paper are in imminent danger of disappearing due to habitat loss on the island of Sumatra. These orangutans live within the Leuser Ecosystem in

Male eating (570 KB) Female eating (535 KB) Female taking a drink (288 KB) Orangutans are large apes with long, red hair. They have very long arms that are used for movement in the trees. Its hands and feet are hook-shaped for latching onto branches. They also use their hands to grasp small twigs that they can use as a tool to obtain food and hold food in their hands while they move about. Males are about twice as big as females and have striking flaps on their cheeks. They can make very strong calls by inflating a pouch in their throat, which adds resonance to their call. Orangutans have large brains and exhibit a high level of intelligence. Orangutans can eat a large amount of food. About 60% of their diet consists of fruit, including mangoes, figs, jackfruits, lychees, durians, and rambutans. The other 40% of their diet is made up of leaves, insects, tree bark, and occasionally eggs and small vertebrates. Orangutans live in humid jungles of Borneo and Sumatra. They spend most of the time in the trees, but occasionally move down to the ground.

Rusti is a temporary visitor at the Honolulu Zoo. After a complicated rescue from a substandard private facility on the mainland, he was given to Orangutan Foundation International (OFI). OFI was founded by Dr. Birute Galdikas, the pioneering primatologist, who lived with an orangutan community as a surrogate member, in remote Borneo. Rusti has been staying at our zoo until OFI can build a suitable facility elsewhere. Read the latest news on Rusti. Rusti's temporary enclosure at the Honolulu Zoo was built for great apes in the 1950's and illustrates the old approach to keeping animals in captivity. The Chimpanzee Exhibit in our Karibuni Reserve demonstrates the modern approach of showing animals in as natural a surrounding as we can provide. Rusti is relaxing in his hammock. Someday soon, we hope he will be climbing trees on the Island of Hawaii. Visitors are often concerned because he looks lonely; however the orangutan is a solitary ape unlike chimpanzees and gorillas.

93. The ORANGUTAN
What does the word orangutan mean? Man of the jungle. It wasn t that long agothat people considered the orangutan a vicious and dangerous animal.
http://www.americazoo.com/kids/orangutan.htm
This friendly relative of man is found in the jungles of Southeast Asia, but only with great difficulty. It quietly hides high up in the trees, and browses for fruits and nuts. The people of Southeast Asia have been cutting down more and more trees to sell, and this has severely limited the space for the orangutans. They are in danger of becoming extinct in the wild if changes are not made to protect their habitat ("habitat" means where they live - in this case, the forests).
What does the word "orangutan" mean?
Man of the jungle.
It wasn't that long ago that people considered the orangutan a vicious and dangerous animal. In fact, the American author, Edgar Allen Poe, wrote a murder mystery a little over 150 years ago called "Murders in the Rue Morgue." And the murderer was a crazed orangutan!
The "crazed" orangutan?
Can orangutans hang from their tails?
Like gorillas and chimps, they have no tails.
Of course Poe's story of a crazed orangutan is pure fiction. In real life orangutans either hide from humans, or they are quite friendly. Their intelligence is on a par with gorillas and chimps, and they have learned to communicate with humans through sign language.
But also like gorillas and older chimps, orangutans are incredibly strong. They can injure a person by accident, so it is best to keep a distance - especially with large older males.

CLASS: Mammalia ORDER: Primates FAMILY: Pongidae Pongo pygmaeus CLASSIFICATION: Not available at this time - Webmaster RANGE: Historical: Northern Sumatra and most of lowland of Borneo Current: Lowland and hilly tropical rain forest, including ipterocarp and peat swamp forest. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Length: Male: 54 in.; Female: 45 in. Weight: Male: 130-200 lbs.; Female: 80-110 lbs. Coloration: Spare, long, coarse red hair, ranging from bright orange in young animals to maroon or dark chocolate in some adults. Face bare and black, but pinkish on muzzle and around eyes of young. DIET: Zoo: Monkey chow, oranges, apples, bananas, vegetables, leaves and shoots. Wild: The Orangutan is largely a frugivore (fruit eater) and one can look at the skull and see how the protruding incisors would come in handy when dealing with large, tough-skinned fruits. Favorite fruits include tropical species and durians, rambutans, jackfruits, lychees, mangosteens, and mangoes plus shoots and leaves. BEHAVIOR: They are rather solitary animals, apart from occasional sexual consortship. Adult animals travel and forage independently, each animal occupying an individual home range of several square kilometers. The home range overlaps considerably.

96. Orangutan
The solitary orangutan lives in the treetops of the rainforest on the islandsof Borneo and Sumatra and is the only great ape found outside of Africa.
http://www.racinezoo.org/new_page_5.htm
The solitary orangutan lives in the treetops of the rainforest on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra and is the only great ape found outside of Africa. "Orang" and "utan" are the Malay words for "man" and "jungle." This "man of the jungle" is not as closely related to humans as are African apes, however.
An orangutan is a heavy-bodied animal that uses its weight to swing back and forth on the branch it is holding until it is close enough to grab a branch in the next tree. Its powerful arms, hands and feet are designed for holding and grasping branches.
Fruit, nuts, leaves, bark, insects and eggs are the main diet of an orangutan. When thirsty, it will locate a hollow in a tree where rainwater has collected.
Mating occurs year-round and females give birth to a single offspring every three to six years. An infant weighs 2.4 - 3.3 pounds and is already able to cling to its mother's hair. The babies grow very slowly and may become somewhat independent at three years of age. They will remain with the mother until she gives birth again.
This intelligent ape poses no threat to man; yet man is certainly its enemy. Orangutan habitat has been destroyed to provide land and timber for increasing human populations. Adult females are slaughtered in order to capture their babies for pet trade. Due to their slow breeding rate, their numbers have not recovered and the orangutan is now a seriously endangered species.
