Orangutan Pongo pygmaeus
Endangered

The name of this homely creature is orangutan, and means “wild man” in Malay. They are heavy-bodied, thick-necked anthropoid apes, native to the swampy coastal forests of Sumatra and Borneo. They have bowed legs and very long arms, sometimes with a span of 2.3 m. Their huge bellies and sparse coat of shaggy red hair make them particularly distinctive. Orangutans are about two thirds the size of gorillas and very powerful.
In trees, they swing, Tarzan-like, in great flying leaps. On the ground they walk on all fours, but not easily, as their short legs are weak and they lack a heel bone. Orangutans are herbivorous. They grow to about 1.6 m in height and weigh about 100 kg. They spend most of their time in the tree-tops, constructing sleeping platforms of leaves and branches, much like a gorilla does.
Today the greatest threat to this species is habitat destruction and disruption. Rain forest is rapidly being logged and cleared for agricultural development and mining, leaving only patches of suitable habitat. The orangutan is very sensitive to human intrusion, and as a consequence, suffers a further reduction to their already low rate of reproduction. To have any hope of saving this species, it is imperative that we preserve their remaining habitat and carefully manage existing reserves.

Wild populations of this peaceful, intelligent, fruit-eating ape are now found only in northern Sumatra and Borneo. Judging from fossils found in southern China and northern Vietnam, the orangutan was, in prehistoric times, more widely distributed throughout the tropical lowland forests of southeast Asia. The world population now numbers between 15,000 and 30,000 in the wild and about 500 in zoos.
The major cause for the recent decline is the continuing destruction of the forests, and, to a lesser extent, the illegal killing of adult females to obtain juveniles for the animal trade. The species is now fully protected by law throughout its range, but enforcement is difficult in remote areas. Existing reserves in Sumatra and Borneo are important in the orangutan's survival. Additional reserves, forest management, and stricter control of international trade are also essential.

A Word from the Director
EACH OF US WAS BORN into a world of incredible diversity of animal and plant life. Throughout our lives most of us marvel at the diversity and uniqueness of life. We visit zoos and watch nature programs on television and are astounded by the strangeness of the creatures we see. I believe that future generations will judge us not by what we have created for them, but by what we have saved for them. Please carefully consider your children, grand-children, and great-grand-children, as you make decisions that affect the natural world. - Ralph Waterhouse Ralph Waterhouse retired December 5, 2003, as Director of Chaffee Zoo. We wish him well and would like to thank him for his years of outstanding service.

All About Apes

All About Orangutans Orangutan Coloring/Information Printout Orangutans are large apes that live in southeast Asia (on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra). These apes mostly live in trees (they are arboreal) and swing from branch to branch using their arms. The word orangutan means "man of the forest" in the Malay language. As its habitats are being usurped by man, the orangutan's population is decreasing and it is in grave danger of extinction. ANATOMY Orangutans have a large, bulky body, a thick neck, very long, strong arms, short, bowed legs, and no tail. Orangutans are about 2/3 the size of the gorilla Hair They are mostly covered with long reddish-brown hair. The Head The orangutan has a large head with a prominent mouth area. Adult males have large cheek flaps (which get larger as the ape ages).

A groundbreaking exhibit tackling the complex field of animal cognition, Think Tank challenges us to ponder how primates and other animals process the world around them. Curious and creative creatures, orangutans at Think Tank are taking part in a long-term language study. Visitors can observe scientists testing the apes' ability to use and understand word symbols. Sulawesi macaques housed at Think Tank demonstrate the complexity of social intelligence. And visitors are challenged to wonder whether a hermit crab's shell is a tool. Think Tank is connected to Great Ape House by the Orangutan Transportation System, or O Line, which orangutans can use to commute between the buildings each day. LIVE!

The Sepilok Nature Resort, Sandakan, Sabah
Image by Andrea and Antonella Ferrari Hidden amongst a veritable treasure trove of tropical plants and grasses, hug trees and spectacular orchids in bloom, the quaint bungalows of the Sepilok Nature Resort are within walking distance of the world-famous Kabili-Sepilok Forest Reserve, precious home of the last wild Orang-utans of Northern Borneo. The resort offers all the comforts and amenities needed after a long wet day spent trekking in the forest: all the timber chalets-sitting by a beautiful natural lake - have attached bathrooms with hot and cold water, shower and bathtub, ceiling fan and air-conditioning. Meals are served in the central building under coved terraces, and it is not uncommon at all to wake up in the morning with an Orang-utan or a few pig-tail Macaques sitting on the verandah. Besides being the ideal staring point for most other wildlife land destinations in Sabah, as the fauna-rich Kinabatangan river and the surrounding Sukau area, the Sepilok Nature Resort also offers the perfect setting for relaxing after a long plane trip, before continuing on a diving holiday to Lakayan.

General Research Interests: Research specialties include studies of primate behavior, ecology, and evolution, with particular focus on orangutans . Other research interests involve tropical rain forest ecology and phenology.
Research Programs: Since 1971 research has been ongoing at the Orangutan research and conservation center in Tanjung Puting National Park, Indonesia. These studies have been specifically concerned with wild orangutan behavior, the development of orangutan conservation programs, and the re-introduction of captured individuals into the wild. Specific areas that have been investigated include orangutan subsistence, sociality, reproduction, cognitive potentials, communications and tool use. Other primate studies have been carried out on proboscus monkeys and macaques. A small number of SFU undergraduate students have been involved in field work at Tanjung Puting and PhD research by a SFU graduate student will begin in 1991.

Pongo abelii The orangutan (also spelt orang utan orang-utan , sometimes incorrectly orangutang ) is a great ape with long arms and reddish, sometimes brown, hair native to Malaysia and Indonesia Orangutan is derived from the Malay Orang Hutan meaning man of the forest Orangutans are the most arboreal of the great apes, spending nearly all of their time in the trees. They are only found in rainforests on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra . These two small isolated populations were classified as subspecies until recently, when they were elevated to the specific level ( Pongo pygmaeus on Borneo, and P. abelii on Sumatra). Furthermore, primatologists now recognise three subspecies of the Bornean orangutan: P. p. pygmaeus in northwest Borneo, P. p. morio in northeast and east Borneo, and P. p. wurmbii in southwest Borneo. Orangutans are highly endangered in the wild. Orangutan habitat destruction due to logging, mining and forest fires has been increasing rapidly in the last decade. Much of this activity is illegal, occurring in national parks that are officially off limits to loggers, miners and plantation development. There is also a major problem with the illegal trapping of baby Orangutans for sale into the pet trade; the trappers usually kill the mother to steal the baby.
