DENVER, Colorado (AP) The Denver Zoo's four orangutans are smelling pretty good these days they're getting daily aromatherapy treatments. That means the 20-year-old ape Mias gets chamomile on his right ear, basil and angelica on his nose, and fennel, eucalyptus and frankincense on his forehead. Keepers says the treatment has helped alleviate symptoms from allergies and an upset stomach. In Allie's case, the 8-year-old primate became depressed when her mother died two years ago. She stopped acting like the silly adolescent she was before her mother's death, but that changed when she started receiving daily aromatherapy. "When you see how goofy they are, this is how it should be," keeper Rhonda Pietsch said as Allie played in her cage after an oil treatment.

Their eyes hold a story that is indecipherable and yet intuitively we relate to them. Just one look into those eyes and you are hooked. Orangutans are highly intelligent with an ability to reason and think. This large, gentle red ape is one of our closest relatives, sharing 97% of the same DNA as humans. Indigenous peoples of Indonesia and Malaysia call this ape "Orang Hutan" literally translating into English as "People of the Forest". In times past they would not kill them because they felt the orangutan was simply a person hiding in the trees, trying to avoid having to go to work or become a slave. Orangutans are unique in the ape world. There are four kinds of great apes : gorillas, chimpanzees, bonobos and orangutans. Only the orangutan comes from Asia; the others all come from Africa. There are two separate species of orangutan - the Sumatran orangutan ( Pongo abelii ) and the Bornean orangutan ( Pongo pygmaeus Orangutans are only found on the islands of
Sumatra and Borneo (click here if you want to see a larger map) The orangutan is the only strictly arboreal ape and is actually the largest tree living mammal in the world. The rest of the apes do climb and build sleeping nests in the trees, but are primarily terrestrial (spending their lives on the ground). Even the hair color of the orangutan, a bright reddish brown, is unique in the ape world.

In the early years, much of my photo work in the Tanjung Puting National Park
took place at Camp Leakey and the forest that surrounds it - the Camp Leakey

In the later years, the locations of my image gathering included several other facilities in Central Indonesian Borneo, places where well over two hundred orphaned orangutans were - and still are - being nurtured by OFI care-givers.

Orangutan rehabilitation sites and sanctuaries currently operate in three geographic regions. The number of a given site corresponds to its position on the map. Note that (*) denotes former rehabilitation sites. Former sites are not shown on the map but are discussed in the text to follow. The five orangutan rehabilitation sites are discussed in more detail below and are organized according to their geographic location. MALAYSIAN BORNEO In Malaysia, orangutans have been singled out for special protection and rehabilitation, unlike other endangered species. The Malaysian government established wildlife protection laws after federation and the 1963 Fauna Conservation Ordinance made it illegal to capture, keep or kill an orangutan within the Malaysian state of Sabah. The first rehabilitation effort was made by Barbara Harrison and the Sarawak Museum staff in 1961 (Harrisson, 1962) at Bako National Park in Sarawak. The aim of the project was to highlight the trade in orangutans and bring international attention to the need for protection (Harrisson, 1962; Schaller, 1961).

Many people come to Bukit Lawang to see Orangutans at the nearby rehabilitation center. Bukit Lawang is also a good base for jungle treks into the Gunung Leuser national park. The tourist town of Bukit Lawang is the main access point for the magnificent rainforest of the Gunung Leuser
Travel tips: practical details
  • Location: Northern Sumatra, nearest city is Medan. Bukit Lawang is situated about 80 km to the north-west of Medan.
  • map: north Sumatra
  • Getting there: There are frequent public mini-buses from Pinang Baris bus station, Medan (2 hour journey). Tourist mini-buses are also available, these will pick you up from your hotel but only run twice a day and are much more expensive than public mini-buses. Don't take the public bus as this will double the journey time.
  • Access: Provided you are accompanied by a licensed guide you can go trekking (walking) into the national park whenever you like, wherever you like for as long as you like. You also need a permit but this is just a formality to obtain. Guides tout for business at all the guesthouses, prices are negotiable.
  • Accommodation: Lots of guesthouses dotted along the Bohorok river, upstream places have cleaner water.

The Disenchanted Forest read full text No Exit An illegal pet industry in Indonesia is pushing orangutans to the brink of extinction in the wild The heat of the tropical sun and the smell of sweating bodies pervade the outdoor Jakarta animal market. Amid a cacophony of parrot chatter, the screams of monkeys and the barking of dogs, Willie Smits, dressed to look like a British oilman, and photographer Viviane Moos elbow their way through the crowd. Smits calls out in Indonesian, asking if anyone has orangutans for sale. The sea of people parts and a man appears with a red, furry baby orangutan clinging to his waist. "It's him," shouts one of the men in the crowd, recognizing Smits. As head of the largest orangutan rescue organization in the world, Smits is hated and feared by people who trade in orangutans and other exotic animals. Although it's illegal to own one of these orangy-red apes on the Southeast Asian islands of Borneo and Sumatra (their last natural refuges) and in many other places, trade in the primate is brisk. A big-bucks black market breeds violence, to which Smits is no stranger: he and his family frequently receive death threats. Even so, Smits continues to go to markets, confiscate orangutans and help police identify dealers in exotic animals. "Take her camera! Pull the film out. Hit them!" cries one of the men. Smits, 45, sees several others reaching for stilettos in their pockets. "I'll buy it," Smits shouts, momentarily confusing the traders and causing them to back off. Although he doesn't like to encourage the trade by making a purchase, Smits thrusts a stack of rupiah worth about $325 at the man with the orangutan, grabs the quivering animal and pulls Moos with him into the crowd. "You can't come back here again," Smits says to Moos, who has been photographing the whole time. "They could kill you."
