See pictures of our Orangutan Habitat completed and Newest section of orangutan chutes The Center for Great Apes, located in Wauchula, Florida, was founded in 1993 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Its primary purpose is to provide a permanent sanctuary in a safe and enriching environment for orangutans and chimpanzees in need of long-term life care … specifically those who have been used in entertainment, kept as pets by private owners, or served as research subjects. The Center began as an effort to offer lifetime care for five young apes born at a private breeding facility before they were sold as pets or entertainers, and so far, has additionally taken in nine older apes with circus, pet, and research backgrounds. Currently, the Center houses

ORANGUTAN Malaysian Islands Unknown The only great ape that lives on the Asian continent, the orangutan is found on the Malaysian islands of Borneo and Sumatra. Its name means "man of the forest," and it is one of thousands of species of wildlife that live in tropical Asian forests. The orangutan's story is similar to that of a large number of Asian animals: its forest habitat is being rapidly destroyed by conversion to agriculture, both by large commercial plantations and smaller subsistence farms. At the same time, humans are killing the orang's prey species (birds and small mammals) for food and capturing it for the pet trade. here are an estimated 30,000 orangutans left in the wild, about 20,000 on Borneo and 10,000 on Sumatra. Scientists are uncertain whether all orangutans are one species, or whether the Sumatran and Bornean populations have become so isolated from each other that they are two subspecies. (Click here to read more about species and subspecies The great apes include gorillas, chimpanzees, and orangutans. Of these, orangs are the most arboreal (living in trees). It is rare for an adult orang to ever touch the ground. Their strong hands, handlike feet, and long arms (with a span of up to 8 feet) are supremely adapted to life in the trees. They do not even have to come to the ground to drink they drink the water that collects in tree holes.

Weight: males up to 90 kg (198 lb.); females to 50 kg (110 lb.) Description: the only great ape from Asia. Taxonomy is disputed, formerly two subspecies: Bornean ( P. p. pygmaeus ) has a round face with dark red coat; Sumatran ( P. p. abelii ) has a long narrow face with paler longer hair. Adult males of both species have large cheek flaps. Life span: up to 50 years Sexual maturity: between 7 and 10 years of age Gestation: 260 to 270 days Habitat: Primary lowland swamp in Borneo and montane forest in northern Sumatra, Indonesia. Diet: fruit and other plant materials including leaves, bark, flowers, and nuts, occasionally insects and small mammals. Status: listed as endangered by USFWS and protected by CITES
Fun Facts
  • Unlike other great apes, orangutans are solitary by nature; this may be related to their need for large quantities of fruit which are dispersed throughout the forest.
Even though they are able to walk upright for short distances, orangutans travel mostly by brachiating (swinging from one branch to another by the arms) through trees, using well-worn corridors in the forest canopy.

Many years ago, the wild orangutan's range covered Laos, Vietnam, other areas in Asia and smaller islands in the Indian Ocean. The orangutan is now extinct
in these areas and can only be found in the northern areas of Sumatra and on Borneo, Southeast Asia. With a population of approximately 60,000 Bornean orangutans (P.H.V.A. Conference, Jakarta 2004) are not in as immediate danger of extinction as those inhabiting Sumatra , whose population estimates reach only between 4500 and 5400 ecologically extinct in the wild within the next ten years One of the last strongholds of the Sumatran orangutan is a portion of the Gunung Leuser (GL) National Park located in the province of North Sumatra. The Leuser Ecosystem is the largest protected rainforest system in Southeast Asia and home to one of the largest orangutan populations in the world. However, the range, diversity and orangutan populations of this area continue to be diminished by logging and other human activities. Webmaster: Ivo Snabl Back to CBA pages Updated 07.06.2004

They show at least the same parental devotion to their young. Many are better parents. They are stronger and more agile than humans and they come quite near to humans in intelligence. Some (but not all) human intelligence is being used to further causes that threaten apes with extinction within a decade, yet in observing their society we can learn more about our own beginnings. Human DNA differs from that of apes by between 1.6 and 3.6 per cent.
Leadership and the survival of the creatures on the planet
The Indonesian rainforest is vanishing fast and many species, great and small, are threatened.
Megawati Sukamoputri, Indonesia's first female president, has indicated that tackling illegal logging is firmly on the agenda. Conservation groups hope that her administration will ensure good forest management and effective law enforcement to safeguard Indonesia's rainforrest - a treasure-trove of biodiversity of global importance.
Megawati recently announcd that Indonesia's forest concession holders, many of whom source timber illegally, will soon need a government-approved certificate of sustainable forest management if they want to continue operations. The Government also recently ordered a temporary ban on log exports in a desperate bid to curb rampant illegal logging.

RELATED Science Magazine Gunung Palung Orangutan Project Dr. Cheryl Knott Harvard University Department of Anthropology Cheryl Knott is director of the Gunung Palung Orangutan Project in West Kalimantan on the island of Borneo in Indonesia. The Harvard University anthropologist talked to CNN about a report she co-authored in the January 2 edition of Science magazine. CNN: What's the significance of determining that orangutans have culture, and have for 14 million years? KNOTT: Biological anthropologists would argue that culture is an evolved human adaptation. Thus, the question is, when did this evolve? Is it unique to humans? Do we see behaviors in our closest living relatives, the apes, that have cultural aspects to them? If so, under what conditions do these cultural behaviors occur? How are they invented? How are they transmitted? Answering these questions helps us to understand how, when and why full-blown culture evolved in humans. So, basically, the significance is that seeing incipient culture in orangutans helps us to understand how, when and why culture evolved in humans.
