As with Conduct Disorder the main features observed are persistent disobedience and opposition to authority figures (such as parents, teachers or other adults). However the basic rights of others are still respected and age appropriate societal rules and behaviour are not violated. Characterised by negative, hostile and defiant behaviour, generally strongest in the home. Before puberty the disorder is more frequently found in males than females, after puberty the ratio equals out. Outward behaviour includes irritability, temper outbursts, frustration and intolerance. The child’s self-esteem is usually low (although child may project an image of “toughness”). Additional symptoms of anxiety and depression are also common.
Only to be considered Oppositional Defiant Disorder if at least of the following behaviours occurred over a period of at least 6 months, in home or school

What is Oppositional Defiant Disorder? An understanding definition is given, as well as suggestions for how to encourage cooperation from the child.
According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual-IV (DSM-IV), which is the manual that psychotherapists use to make diagnoses, the essential feature of Oppositional Defiant Disorder is a pattern of negativistic, hostile and defiant behavior that is more common than that seen in other young people of the same mental age. Most of the parents', teachers', and school counselors' report that these children are argumentative with adults, frequently lose their temper, swear, and are often angry and/or easily annoyed or provoked by others. In addition, they tend to blame others for their own mistakes and behaviors. bodyOffer(32382) It is important for professionals to understand that these behaviors are present in the home, but may or may not be present at school or with adults or peers and vice versa. In some cases, symptoms, from the beginning of the disturbance, are displayed in areas outside the home. However, in other examples, they start in the home, but later develop in areas outside the home. What is typical is that symptoms of this disorder are more evident in interactions with adults or peers whom the child knows well. Therefore, clinicians who examine the children often do not see these behaviors in an initial interview. Moreover, when asked directly aboout being oppositoinal or defiant, the children tend to not identify themselves with the traits; instead, they justify the behavior as a response to unreasonable circumstances.

Definition Oppositional defiant disorder is a pattern of disobedient, hostile, and defiant behavior towards authority figures. The pattern must persist for at least six months and must go beyond the bounds of normal childhood misbehavior. This disorder is more prevalent in boys than girls. Some studies have found that as much as 20% of the school age population are affected, but most experts believe this figure is over-inflated due to changing cultural definitions of normal childhood behavior and other possible racial, cultural, and gender biases. The onset typically begins by age 8. The cause of this disorder is unknown, and may be due to a combination of biology and parenting or environmental factors.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
A child who routinely and persistently argues and refuses to follow rules can be said to have "oppositional defiant disorder." Because such children anger so easily, they have trouble getting along with family, friends, schoolmates, and teachers. They may also have learning difficulties and may have trouble expressing themselves. The disorder is found in children ages 3 to 18 years. Before the teenage years, it affects more boys than girls.
Causes
Doctors do not know the cause of oppositional defiant disorder. The problem seems to be more common among children who have other emotional problems and in those whose parents have serious marital problems.
Signs/Symptoms
Symptoms may first show up in the home. Later, children exhibit defiant behavior in other places. A child who displays the following symptoms for more than 6 months is considered a victim of the disorder:

Definition
Oppositional defiant disorder is a recurring pattern of negative, hostile, disobedient, and defiant behavior in a child or adolescent, lasting for at least six months without serious violation of the basic rights of others. Description The behavior disturbances cause clinically significant problems in social, school, or work functioning. The course of oppositional defiant disorder varies among patients. In males, the disorder is more common among those who had problem temperaments or high motor activity in the preschool years. During the school years, patients may have low self-esteem, changing moods, and a low frustration tolerance. Patients may swear and use alcohol, tobacco, or illicit drugs at an early age. There are often conflicts with parents, teachers, and peers. Children with this disorder show their negative and defiant behaviors by being persistently stubborn and resisting directions. They may be unwilling to compromise, give in, or negotiate with adults. Patients may deliberately or persistently test limits, ignore orders, argue, and fail to accept blame for misdeeds. Hostility is directed at adults or peers and is shown by verbal aggression or deliberately annoying others. Causes and symptoms Oppositional defiant disorder is more common in boys than girls and the disorder typically begins by age eight. Although the specific causes of the disorder are unknown, parents who are overly concerned with power and control may cause an eruption to occur. Symptoms often appear at home, but over time may appear in other settings as well. Usually the disorder occurs gradually over months or years. Several theories about the causes of oppositional defiant disorder are being investigated. Oppositional defiant disorder may be related to:

Oppositional Defiant Disorder
What is it?
Remember when your child was going through the "terrible two's"? Did that stage seem to continue as your child got older? Children and adolescents with Oppositional Defiant Disorder, or ODD, are much more difficult to be with than other children their age. They display hostile behaviors which occur more often than normal and are usually seen before the child reaches eight years of age. Some examples of this negative behavior:
  • Frequent temper tantrums Arguments with adults Blames others for own mistakes or behaviors Annoying behaviors Easily annoyed by others Resentfulness Vindictive behavior Purposeful defiance of rules or requests
In school, teachers may also find these students to have low frustration tolerance in completing assignments, frequent temper tantrums, and blaming schoolmates for their own behavior. They also may display other behaviors associated with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) such as short attention span and limited ability to concentrate, restlessness, fidgeting, and hyperactivity.
What are the Symptoms?
