Chances are that if you are a new parent to this site you probably aren't having a great parenting day.
Come in, familiarize yourself to our site, ask questions and read our stories.
We are a group of parents who are raising challenging children. Our kids have many different diagnoses, but all of them are oppositional and resistant to parenting.
We use many different methods and treatment plans with a variety of results. We have found that there isn't a "magic bullet," but we are always looking and supporting each other along this journey. We are parents who are committed to helping our children grow and flourish and survive their childhood.
It is our goal for our web site to be a "soft place to land for the battle-weary parent." You will be amazed at the number of suggestions offered and the amount of support given. We even manage to have a few laughs along the way! My advice is to take what you need, offer what you can, and leave the rest.
Please make sure you visit the recommended book section, as most of these books have been read by many parents who have found them to be extremely valuable. You can also have these shipped direct to your home from this web site.

2. Children With Oppositional Defiant Disorder - AACAP Facts For Families # 72
CHILDREN WITH oppositional defiant disorder. No. 72, (12/99). All children are oppositional from time to time, particularly when tired, hungry, stressed or upset.
http://www.aacap.org/publications/factsfam/72.htm
C HILDREN W ITH O PPOSITIONAL D EFIANT D ISORDER No. 72 All children are oppositional from time to time, particularly when tired, hungry, stressed or upset. They may argue, talk back, disobey, and defy parents, teachers, and other adults. Oppositional behavior is often a normal part of development for two to three year olds and early adolescents. However, openly uncooperative and hostile behavior becomes a serious concern when it is so frequent and consistent that it stands out when compared with other children of the same age and developmental level and when it affects the child's social, family, and academic life. In children with Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), there is an ongoing pattern of uncooperative, defiant, and hostile behavior toward authority figures that seriously interferes with the youngster's day to day functioning. Symptoms of ODD may include:
  • frequent temper tantrums
  • excessive arguing with adults
  • active defiance and refusal to comply with adult requests and rules
  • deliberate attempts to annoy or upset people
  • blaming others for his or her mistakes or misbehavior
  • often being touchy or easily annoyed by others
  • frequent anger and resentment
  • mean and hateful talking when upset
  • seeking revenge
The symptoms are usually seen in multiple settings, but may be more noticeable at home or at school. Five to fifteen percent of all school-age children have ODD. The causes of ODD are unknown, but many parents report that their child with ODD was more rigid and demanding than the child's siblings from an early age. Biological and environmental factors may have a role.

Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) What is it? ODD is a psychiatric disorder that is characterized by two different sets of problems. These are aggressiveness and a tendency to purposefully bother and irritate others. It is often the reason that people seek treatment. When ODD is present with ADHD, depression, tourette's, anxiety disorders, or other neuropsychiatric disorders, it makes life with that child far more difficult. For Example, ADHD plus ODD is much worse than ADHD alone, often enough to make people seek treatment. The criteria for ODD are: A pattern of negativistic, hostile, and defiant behavior lasting at least six months during which four or more of the following are present:
  • 1. Often loses temper 2. often argues with adults 3. often actively defies or refuses to comply with adults' requests or rules 4. often deliberately annoys people 5. often blames others for his or her mistakes or misbehavior 6. is often touchy or easily annoyed by others 7. is often angry and resentful 8. is often spiteful and vindictive
The disturbance in behavior causes clinically significant impairment in social, academic, or occupational functioning.

What is Conduct Disorder?

According to DSM-IV criteria, conduct disorder may be diagnosed when a child seriously misbehaves with aggressive or nonaggressive behaviors against people, animals or property that may be characterized as belligerent, destructive, threatening, physically cruel, deceitful, disobedient, or dishonest. This may include stealing, intentional injury, and forced sexual activity. Keep in mind that this behavior disorder consists of a pattern of severe, repetitive acting-out behavior and not of an isolated incident here and there. As stated, conduct disorder is a repetitive and persistent pattern of behavior in which the basic rights of others, or major rules and values of society are violated, as shown by the presence of three (or more) of the following behavior patterns in the past 12 months, with at least one behavior pattern present in the past six months: Aggression to people and animals:
  • Often bullies, threatens, or intimidates others.
