(Didelphis virginiana)
Quick Facts
The Virginia Opossum is the only marsupial found in North America.
An opossum will eat just about anything, including carrion.
Newborn opossums are so small you could fit 24 of them into a teaspoon!
Opossums use their tails like a fifth hand to grip tree branches!
The opossum relies on its excellent hearing to detect prey rustling beneath the forest floor.
When frightened, an opossum may bluff by hissing, screeching and drooling. The Virginia Opossum, sometimes called a 'possum, is a marsupial (mar-SOOP-e-al). There are lots of marsupials in Australia, but the Virginia Opossum is the only North American marsupial. An opossum is about the size of a house cat. It has grizzled white and gray fur. Adult opossums weigh about 2-6 kg (4-14 lbs). They live alone, are active at night, and they are good climbers. You can find this opossum in the eastern United States, and along the west coast from British Columbia and to Baja California. They like to live in forests, brushy areas, and farmland.

Opossums (click the picture for a closer view) When you see a dead opossum on the road, take a minute to stop and remove it. Another animal may come by to inspect the dead opossum. You can prevent that animal from meeting it's death in traffic. More importantly, the dead animal may have been carrying young. Babies are carried in the mothers pouch, and they often survive impact with a vehicle. Check the pouch for survivors, and contact a rehabilitator immediately if you do find living young. Opossums in Rehabilitation Only a mother (or a rehaber) could love such a face. Opossums have been around for a very, very long time. (Over 70 million years ). This means they were around when the Dinosaurs were here. It is the only native American marsupial. Their intelligence level has been found to be above that of dogs, more on the order of pigs. Always on the move, their diet consists mainly of insects, snails, slugs, carrion, and any other delights they may find. They will eat other "road kill" as well as cat food, dog food and people food. When attacked, an opossum will "play dead" to confuse it’s attacker, although this tactic doesn’t seem to work when confronting an automobile!

Opossums
Opossums ( Didelphis virginiana ) are the definitive host of S. neurona . Opossums shed sporocysts, which are the infective stage for both aberrant hosts, horses, and the natural intermediate hosts, the identity of which are unknown. A flurry of recent research activity has revealed that S. neurona and S. falcatula are distinct species. The geographic distribution of the occurrence of EPM in horses closely matches the geographic range of opossums. This range includes most of South America, all of Central America and most of the US and southern Canada. Regions of the US in which there are no opossums have low rates of both exposure and central nervous system infection with EPM. Those infections that do occur are likely a result of either exposure in horses having left the area, or the rare exposure from hay, grain or other substances originating from an endemic area. Opossums have roamed the New World for 170 million years, predating dinosaurs. As recently as the turn of the century, opossums in North America were limited in range to the Southeastern United States. However, in the last century, opossums have spread to fill most of the US, and parts of Southern Canada. This increase in population reflects the adaptability of this species. Garbage and other waste is a favorite food source, and declines in fur trapping have resulted in a population explosion of this pest species. The overpopulation of opossums has inevitably resulted in an increase of EPM, and probably has other ecological implications.

Opossums are preyed on by just about every carnivore. Among their chief predators are foxes, owls and coyotes, but many are killed by automobiles. They are very slow runners. In some parts of the country, they are even killed for their meat and fur. These are placid animals and when confronted or threatened will usually try to escape up the nearest tree. With their prehensile tails and opposable "thumbs" on their hind feet, opossums are capable tree climbers. When cornered, an opossum will gape, hiss, and display its very sharp teeth (all 50 of them). When an opossum is under a great deal of stress, it will sometimes fall into an involuntarily catatonic shock-like state, termed as "playing possum." It is important to remember this fact when attempting to pick up a "dead" opossum! One unique feature is distinguished by their form of reproduction. Opossums belong to the marsupial (animals with pouches; e.g., kangaroos) family. The young are born in almost an embryonic form and must find their way to the mother's pouch where they attach themselves to a nipple for the rest of their gestation period (about 50 days). Litters average about 8 but can be as large as 13. At about three months of age, when the young are fully weaned, the young will become independent of the mother. Living With Opossums Opossums are scavengers and usually do more good than harm. We advise tolerance. However, opossums will sometimes den in an attic or under a building where they are unwanted. If this happens:

How to Get Rid of Florida Opossum Opossums Possum Possums
Opossum Info:
Opossums are common in central Florida. They are unique for several reasons. They are the only North American marsupials. This means that females have a pouch on the belly where the young, up to 13, are carried and nourished for a time after their birth. Opossums also have a prehensile tail, from which they occasionally hang. They are also known for "playing possum", or feigning death, as a defense tactic. Adult opossums are typically about two feet long and about ten pounds. They are omnivorous, and will eat almost anything, including carrion and garbage. Opossums are excellent climbers, and have a very strong immune system. They are nocturnal.
Nuisance concerns:
The opossum complaints I receive are usually due to one of four reasons: 1) They have taken up residence under a porch or shed.
2) They are stealing garbage, pet food, or harassing pets.
3) They have taken up residence in an attic.

http://www.city.west-lafayette.in.us/wlpd/opossum.htm
OPOSSUMS The name "opossum" is derived from an Algonquian Indian word "apasum", meaning white animal. While there are over 65 species of opossums, only one, the Didelphis Virginiana, more commonly known as the Virginia opossum, is native to North America. Didelphis means double womb and refers to the pouch as a secondary place of development for the infant opossums. Virginiana refers to the state of Virginia where the opossum was first observed by early English colonists. However, opossums today can be found throughout most of the United States and portions of Canada and Mexico. Whether rural, residential or in the wilderness, opossums are a benefit to any area they inhabit. Their diet includes all types of bugs and insects including cockroaches, crickets and beetles. They love snails. They also eat mice and rats. The nocturnal opossum is attracted to our neighborhoods by the availability of water, pet food left out at night and overripe, rotting fruit that has fallen from trees. The opossum in turn helps keep our neighborhoods clean and free of unwanted, harmful garden pests and rodents, which may carry diseases. The opossum has earned the title of "Nature's Little Sanitation Engineer." Opossum Facts:
North America's only marsupial (female has a pouch) mammal. The female carries and nurses her young in her marsupium until they are about 2 to 3 months old; then they are carried on her back another 1 to 2 months on her back whenever they are away from the den.

Opossums
Opossums are the only marsupial on this continent. Also known as Virginia opossums, they are native to the southeastern United States but were introduced to the West in 1890. Currently, there are established populations along the West Coast from British Columbia to San Diego. Generally nocturnal, opossums spend the day in hollow tree trunks, rock crevices, under brush piles, or in burrows. Opossums inhabit forested or brushy habitats, and have adapted well to living close to people in urban and suburban environments. Although they can climb and are good swimmers, opossums prefer to live on the ground where they amble about slowly. Because of this, they are frequently struck by cars when crossing the street. Opossums are omnivores. They eat both plant and animal foods, and scavenge carrion and garbage. Basically solitary, opossums prefer to avoid each other except during breeding season in late winter. Like other marsupials, opossums give birth to almost embryonic young which crawl into their mother's pouch where they will remain firmly attached to a nipple until they are about fifty days old. When the pouch becomes too crowded, the young venture out and ride on their mother's back. Because of their long, naked tails, opossums are sometimes mistaken for large rats. Their teeth give them a menacing look, but opossums are actually quite docile and would prefer to avoid contact with humans. When confronted with danger, they do "play opossum," which is a state similar to fainting that can last from under one minute to six hours, and is designed to make predators lose interest in the motionless opossum.

Opossum: Al's Story
It was early in the morning, in southwest Iowa, when I got thrown from my mom’s back. A dog attacked her. The dog was big and kept coming. He was trying to kill me. He picked me up in his mouth, but then dropped me. I do not know why the dog dropped me, I looked around and all of my opossum brothers and sisters were not moving, my mom was bleeding and not breathing. I was very scared and hurt so I hid in the corner of this big garage and kept an eye on my family, hoping someone would move. No one ever did and I was suddenly picked up and put in a box.
I stayed with her for two months; she fed me and taught me how to catch bugs. She did not hold me; I did not want her to. She gave me medicine to help me heal. Then one day she put me in another box and we traveled. When she opened the box I saw trees, grass, and bushes. I heard the stream and the sounds of crickets, I did not want to leave the box but my “mom” insisted. I put one foot out and sniffed, I smelled it, yes I did. Freedom.

The Virginia Opossum, Didelphis virginiana
One of the most unusual mammals that can be encountered along the river is Didelphis virginiana , the Virginia opossum (sometimes called the American opossum). This is North America's only representative of the order Marsupialia, the marsupial mammals, so called because of the external abdominal pouch called the marsupium within which the young develop. These are ancient animals with fossil remains known from 70 million years ago. This means relatives of the opossum in your backyard roamed the Earth with the great dinosaurs! Today Marsupials mainly occur in Australia (kangaroos, wallabies, etc.), and many people don't realize that we have a marsupial mammal here in New England, the shy and unassuming 'possum.
Opossums are covered with short silvery fur interspersed with longer course white-tipped hairs. Each foot has five toes equipped with a sharp claw except for the inner toe of the hind foot which has no claw and is opposable like the human thumb. This greatly aids the animal in climbing trees, a major part of its lot in life. The tail is bare and prehensile, allowing the possum to stabilize itself in the tree branches, though they do not swing from their tails like monkeys. Generally shy and slow moving, the opossum relies on stealth and a nocturnal lifestyle to avoid danger. When an opossum does find itself in danger it is not (quite) defenseless, as we'll see in a moment.
Opossums have large mouths which contain a number of sharp jagged teeth.

Managing Opossum Problems
The opossum ( Didelphis virginiana ) is a house cat sized mammal (4 - 14 lbs.) with moderately long fur that ranges in color from white to dark gray. The fur is frequently darker on the legs and lighter on the back. Its face is long and pointed with dark, rounded, paper-thin, hairless ears. Opossums have 50 teeth, more than any other North American mammal. The tail is hairless, scaly and prehensile. They have five toes on each foot and the inside toe on the hind foot is opposable. Opossums have expanded their range to include all of California. Biology Opossums are the only marsupials (pouched mammals) in North America. They breed from January through November and produce two litters per year. The undeveloped young are born 13 day after mating. They crawl to the female pouch (marsupium) and attach themselves to one of the 7 - 13 teats. Development continues in the pouch for 7 - 8 weeks. Young opossums will stay with the female until they are weaned at about 4 months of age. Except for females with young, opossums are solitary animals. Opossums are omnivores and eat a wide variety of foods including fruits, vegetables, nuts, meat, eggs, insects, carrion, pet food, and garbage. They are found in many different habitats from woodlands to highly developed residential areas. In urban areas, they have been found living in attics, garages, chimneys, woodpiles, under houses or decks, or in any place that offers protection. Although they are very common in urban areas, opossums are not often seen due to their nocturnal habits.

All About Opossums
This medium-sized mammal has long guard hairs, which gives it a very coarse appearance. The naked ears and almost hairless tail give it the appearance of a large rat. Its coat varies from light, almost white, to almost black, but usually has a gray appearance. The opossum uses its tail to grasp and hold objects. It can hold itself briefly from a tree limb by using its tail and one foot. The weight of an opossum is 12-13 pounds. They can be found in eastern, mid-western and in far western United States. They generally cannot live for any extended period of time in temperatures below 20 degrees F., as they do not hibernate. Opossums appear to be vicious, as when confronted they will hiss and show their teeth, but in reality they are very shy creatures. Instead of fighting, they will sometimes feign catatonia (playing possum) which can last a minute or two or upwards of two hours. Caution should always be taken to never touch an opossum without protection. These night roamers prefer deciduous woodlands. They roam at night searching for food without following any prescribed trails or travel routes. Females breed twice a year having a dozen young. These mammals are known as marsupials as when they are born in an almost embryonic form they crawl into the mother’s pouch where they attach themselves and nurse themselves for approximately 50 days before beginning to wean. At three months of age the young become independent.

The opossum is a very short. It is 12 to 20 inches long and five inches wide. It has two litters of babies a year. It can live up to 50 years old. The opossum is a meat-eater. The kinds of meat it eats is anything smaller than its self. Sometimes if food is scarce it will eat plants. If you see an opossum in the city it will not be able to eat meat, so it will probably be eating garbage.
