Named for the state where the first specimen was described, Virginia opossums are native to the eastern and southern regions of the United States. The first opossums in Oregon arrived as pets around 1910. Some of these pet opossums escaped or were released, establishing permanent populations in Oregon. The opossum has unique characteristics that make it an interesting animal to study and rehabilitate. The Virginia opossum is a cat-sized mammal (25-40 inches long, 8-13 pounds). It has short black and white underfur covered by white, coarse guard hair. The coloring is white around the face and mottled white and black around the body and legs. The ears and part of the tail are mostly hairless and black. The opossum is a good climber, having five toes on each foot including thumbs and big toes which are opposable and allow grasping of branches.

opossums are very necessary animals to our environment. They later carry their juvenile opossums on their backs wherever they go.
http://www.cvm.uiuc.edu/wmc/opossums.htm
  • Females have litters of up to 20. Babies' eyes open in 58-72 days, they wean at 13-15 weeks and their body temperature is 90-99 degrees. Opossums are very necessary animals to our environment. They are scavengers and help keep the earth clean. Opossums are marsupials….they do not have placentas but develop their young in a pouch like a kangaroo or Tasmanian devil! They later carry their juvenile opossums on their backs wherever they go. Opossums are the only marsupials in North America. Always check a dead opossum for babies. Just because the mother is dead doesn’t mean the babies are! But they will be if you don’t check. If there are babies in the pouch, try to pull the babies off the mother, if you can’t, transport the mother and babies to the nearest rehabilitator. If baby opossums are at least 10-12 inches long, they are able to be on their own unless you see that they are sick or injured. Treat an opossum like a raccoon when it comes to one being a pest.

The single most important ingredient to raising healthy opossums is DIET. Unfortunately, there's a lot of misinformation out there. There are websites telling people that if they feed opossums cat food, it will kill them. Totally absurd!!
Think about it. They eat carrion . Simple common sense should tell anyone that they need a balanced diet, and that is canned cat food, or dry cat food, moistened. If they do not get the proper diet, then they will most certainly get Metabolic Bone Disease and will eventually die or have to be euthanized. Want a second opinion? Contact your nearest zoological park and they will tell you the same thing.

http://www.nsis.org/wildlife/mamm/opossum.html
Opossums The Virginia opossum is the only opossum ( Didelphidae ) and the only marsupial in North America. Female marsupials have an external abdominal pouch. The Virginia Opossum Didelphis virginiana , is found in areas with trees, including large cities, throughout Florida. Color varies widely from almost white to almost black, though most commonly it is gray. It has a long (11-14"), hairless, prehensile tail. It has a pointed pink nose, prominent whiskers, and small, black, hairless ears with white tips. It has opposable thumbs on its hind feet. Overall body length is 27-33". The opossum has a slow, ambling gait, yet is an excellent climber. It forages both on the ground and in the trees, primarily at night. It is omnivorous and opportunistic, eating frogs, mice, rattlesnakes (it's immune to pit viper venom), fish, worms, insects, eggs, fruits, nuts, and seeds. Food plants include cedars persimmons grapes mulberries ... tupelos , and pawpaws Opossums have two litters each year, breeding from December through midsummer. The gestation period is only 13 days. A litter of 18-25 is born but because there are only 13 teats in the pouch, no more than 13 can survive. The actual number leaving the pouch at 70-80 days old is usually 6 or 7. Once the young do leave the pouch, they hang onto the mother's back or tail. They move on when they are about 4 months old. The opossum is shy and solitary. When threatened it will often hiss or growl, but will rarely attack. It may "play possum", going limp and appearing to be dead.

Opossum
Didelphis virginiana These underappreciated mammals are the only marsupials found in the United States. They are nocturnal (active at night) and are very common within Baltimore City's limits, as well as its suburbs. Opossums are slow, non-aggressive foragers. They are omnivorous, feeding on berries, worms, insects, bird eggs and human leftovers. Females carry their young in a pouch until they are too large to fit inside. At this age, the young ride on their mother's back, clinging to her fur. Opossums climb well and may enter basements or take up residence under a deck or porch. When opossums reside in a crawlspace or basements they can be quite messy. Accumulated feces and fleas can present a hazard to humans or pets. They are not aggressive and usually freeze when frightened giving them the appearance of being dead and leading to the old saying, "playing oposuum." Back to Top

MARSUPIALIA
Family DIDELPHIDAE
American Opossums
The vernacular name opossum generally applies to members of this family, which now is found only in the New World. The term possum is used mainly for members of certain marsupial in the Australasian region.
The family Didelphidae, containing 11 Recent genera and 77 species, is found naturally from southeastern Canada through the eastern United States and Mexico and into South America to about 47 degrees S in Argentina. Opossums also occur on some of the islands in the Lesser Antilles. Kirsch 1977c) proposed recognition of two living subfamilies: Didelphinae for most genera and Caluromyinae for Caluromys, Caluromysiops, and Glironia . The sequence of genera presented here follows that of Kirsch and Calaby
The members of this family are small to medium in size. For Marmosa , which includes the smallest species, adult head and body length is about 85-185 mm and tail length is 90-250 mm. In Didelphis , the largest genus, adult head and body length is 325-500 mm and tail length is 255-535 mm. The tail is usually long, scaly, very scantily haired, and prehensile, but in some forms it is short and rather hairy. Some genera have long, projecting guard hairs in the pelage. The muzzle is elongate, and the ears have well-developed conches. The limbs are short, with the hind limbs slightly longer. All four feet have five separate digits. The great toe is large, clawless, and opposable. A distinct marsupial pouch is present in Didelphis, Chironectes

MARSUPIALIA
DIDELPHIDAE Genus CALUROMYS
J. A. Allen, 1900
Woolly Opossums
There are three species ( Cabrera Hall Kirsch and Calaby Massoia and Foerster
  • C. derbianus , southern Mexico to Ecuador;
  • C. lanatus , Colombia t northern Argentina and southern Brazil;
  • C. philander , Venezuela to southern Brazil.
Head and body length is 180-290 mm, tail length is 270-490 mm, and weight ( Bucher and Fritz 1977) is 200-500 grams. The pelage is long, fine, and woolly and extends along almost all of, or more than the basal half of, the tail. Some forms are pale gray or otherwise not well marked, but woolly opossums usually have an ornate color pattern, including the diagnostic dark median stripe on the face, which extends between the ears and the eyes almost to the nose. Some individuals show a pale stripe extending backward from the shoulder region. The ornate color pattern may also include indistinct dark patches around the eyes, a light creamy white to buffy white face, and a reddish and blackish body.
These opossums can generally be distinguished by the striped face, woolly pelage, and characteristics of the tail. The prehensile tail of Caluromys is longer than the head and body; its terminal part is not haired and varies from cream-colored pinkish.

Opossums protected by state law Thursday, May 15, 2003 By Michael A. Fuoco, Post-Gazette Staff Writer Personnel at a Westmoreland County wildlife rehabilitation center plan to report to state game officials that an Arnold man beat an opossum to death with a shovel when it wandered into his yard on Mother's Day. Mel Schake, information and education supervisor for the Pennsylvania Game Commission's 10-county Southwest Region, said he hadn't yet heard about the Arnold incident but, speaking generally, said people need to realize that wildlife are protected by law. "Opossums are not the cutest, most attractive critters we have, but they are still protected under the game and wildlife code and you can't indiscriminately kill them," Schake said. "Generally, they are not aggressive animals, more inclined to run away, given the opportunity." Jill Nadzam, rehabilitation manager of the Pennsylvania Wildlife Center, said personnel learned of the incident Sunday when the dead opossum, with 10 opossum babies in its marsupial pouch, were brought to the Verona facility by a man who witnessed the attack and unsuccessfully begged his neighbor to stop.
