Opossum Florida's only marsupial is the Virginia opossum ( Didelphis virginiana ). Opossums are about the size of a house cat, have long naked tails and small ears. Opossums occur throughout the state in virtually all habitats. If threatened they may go limp and appear dead, hence "playing possum". Opossums are common in residential and suburban areas, and are most active at night. Opossums are attracted to virtually any type of available food, including garbage, pet food, or cultivated fruits and vegetables. To prevent attraction of opossums garbage cans should be secured with rubber straps, and pet food should be taken in at night. A landowner may lawfully live-trap nuisance opossums using sardines or cat food as effective bait. Wildlife may not be lawfully relocated without an FWC permit and permission from the private property owner. Wildlife may not be lawfully relocated to public land. Relocating wildlife is seldom biologically sound, the animal often does not survive.

Information on controlling opossums, grinners, possum, Possums and protecting horses. Protecting your horses from opossums. 1. Repair the barn.

Opossums
Scientific Name : Didelphis virginiana Possums' or grinners as some people call them, are relatively harmless. They would rather run than fight and are very helpful in being nature's four legged garbage cans. They will eat almost anything. Control Issues: Solutions to Common Possum problems 1. I have an opossum in my trash can Keep trash cans covered. Possums frequently become trapped inside trash cans as they search for food. If you find one inside and you have not been exposed to its saliva or other body fluids, then simply kick the can over on its side and walk away. Keep children and pets away as well. Possums won't leave until they feel safe. If possible wait until nighfall to do this. 2. Possum on Fence or Opossum won't move Contrary to popular belief, possums don't play dead. However when frightened, opossums will sit there and hiss with their mouth open. If you find a possum who won't move, don't assume that he is injured. Most often the opossum is frightened and will simply hold his ground and defend himself. Simply walk away and keep children and pets away. (Of course, you should make sure the opossum has not bitten any pet or person if it has, contact your health dept). The opossum will move on when he feels safe.
Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis
I have learned that there is a parasite that is associated with opossums. The possums contaminate grain with their feces, the horses eat it and get infected with the parasite with then attacks the horse's central central nerve system. It can be very expensive to treat with estimates ranging from $200.00 - $800.00 per month for six months. The opossum gets it from the muscles of birds they eat.

The opossum is North America's only marsupial . A marsupial is an animal with a pouch, like a kangaroo or a koala. The opossum has been around for at least 70 million years and is one of Earth's oldest surviving mammals. The opossum is about the size of a large house cat. It has a triangular head and long pointed noses. It has grayish fur everywhere but on its ears, feet and tail. Its tail is prehensile . A prehensile tail is adapted for grasping and wrapping around things like tree limbs. The opossum can hang from its tail for a short time. Some people think opossums hang from their tails and sleep. They don't. Their tails aren't strong enough to hold them for that long. The opossum has opposable hallux . A hallux is like a thumb. The opossum's "thumbs" are on its rear feet. The hallux helps it grasp branches when it climbs. The opossums doesn't hibernate in the winter. It will often hole up during very cold weather because it runs the risk of getting frostbite on its hairless ears, tail, and toes.
The Virginia opossum is found in most of the United States east of the Rocky Mountains and on the West Coast. It is also found in Mexico, Central America and in British Columbia, Canada.

Oh well, never mind, it's a dumb name anyway. Stupid humans and their cute pet names... Anyway, as far as I can tell, I am the only possum on earth with his own 'dot com'. But I'm not here to talk about the internet, I'm here to talk about me. And did I mention that my name is Theo Possum? My story starts the night dear old Mom walked out in front of a pickup truck. Even though Mom was not looking very good and was feeling kind of run down, my two sisters and three brothers and I were all safe and cozy in her pouch. We were adopted by well meaning human types who wanted to save us from certain death. They gave us a nice cardboard pouch with soft fuzzy towels and a hot water bottle to keep us warm. Every three hours they would wake us up and feed us a warm formula of soy milk and 2% milk out of an eyedropper. Why soy milk and 2% milk, you ask? Who knows? As we grew, our humans fed us all kinds of things that they thought possums liked to eat. We were given grapes, apples, earthworms, cicadas, balogna, baby food, cheese, hamburger, turkey, gravy and other things I still can't name. We were happy, hungry and growing. Our humans were very pleased at saving us from inevitable doom.

opossums. If described. That s because opossums are our only marsupial, and marsupials are considered very ancient forms of mammals.

    Opossums
I f you live anyplace in the U.S. other than the far north or the western states' mountain or plateau region, and if you're in a small town or even a big one with some scattered natural or semi-natural areas, there's a fair chance that eventually a gray, cat-sized, long-haired, long-snoutted, long-tailed animal will lumber across your backyard, or poke its pink nose at you over the edge of a garbage can. At first you may think you're seeing a super-huge rat, but it's none other than the opossum, sometimes known as the Virginia Opossum, Didelphis virginiana. Elsewhere we've spoken of those "living fossils," the Duck-billed Platypus and Spiny Anteater of Australia and New Zealand. Here in America our opossum is nearly as curious despite its being fairly common. If you open just about any field guide to North American mammals, the opossum will probably be the very first of the 380 or so mammal species described. That's because opossums are our only marsupial , and marsupials are considered very ancient forms of mammals. Field guides typically place the "primitive" organisms first. The vast majority of the world's marsupials occur mainly in Australia, where kangaroos are the best known of the group.

    Living With Opossum
    Opossum Facts
Opossums are among the most primitive mammals. Fossil ancestry goes back 70 Million years. They have survived by adapting to human habitat and being able to eat just about anything. They are beneficial in that they help to keep the balance of nature. Opossums are often mistaken for rats. They are not rodents, they are marsupials. They are not aggressive toward humans or pets but they will attempt to defend themselves if cornered. They are relatively disease free. They do not carry Parvo virus, distemper or rabies. They are actually an excellent animal to have around your property because they eat rats, mice, snails, slugs and insects. They also eat over ripe fruit that has fallen to the ground. They are called "omnivores" because they meat as well as vegetables and fruit. Opossums are nest builders. They are also nocturnal. They spend much of the day in their dens. At night, they forage for food. They are excellent climbers using all their hands, feet and tail to grasp.

Subject: Oppossums and Mites Hi Everyone, I have two questions I would appreciate some expertise on.... 1) I have seen a opposum in my yard late at night recently and wonder if he/she is any threat to birds. I know I have racoons around, too, but hopefully I've foiled them. 2) Read recently someone who checked on newly hatched baby birds one day and then 2 days later found the babies dead and covered in mites (yikes!). Usually before nesting starts I clean the boxes out throughly with bleach, etc. but this year, time crept up on me and I didn't get to. Is there anything I can do at this point to prevent mites or blowflies or whatever else may hurt the birds? Cheezz, the more I learn every year about all the things that can happen to wild birds, the more amazed I am that there is a bird in the sky at all. It makes me very appreciative of nature's successes.

In the United States Virginia opossums are found on the West Coast and in areas east of the Rocky Mountains. They range south through most of Central America. They are expanding their range northwards and are now found in southern Ontario, Canada. Populations of Virginia opossum found west of the Rocky Mountains in the United States were introduced there by humans, it is not part of their natural range. Biogeographic Regions : nearctic (native Virginia opossums are found in a variety of environments, ranging from relatively dry to more wet environments. They prefer areas of deciduous forest where permanent water is available, especially streams and swamps. Virginia possums also do well in urban and suburban environments.

Opossum trail pattern diagram. Natural History of Opossums Opossums are the only North American marsupials. A marsupial is an animal with a pouch, like a kangaroo. Opossums have pointed noses and naked tails. They are the only North American mammals with prehensile (grasping) tails. The tail is used to assist in climbing. It also stores extra fat reserves, enabling the animal to survive lean times. Opossums have opposable thumbs on their hind feet which help them to grip branches and climb. They are the only non-primates with opposable thumbs. Opossums have the most teeth of any North American mammal. In the trail pattern at left, the two tracks, front and hind, overlap each other. Because the tracks are doubled, the trail can look like that of a much larger animal. Early morning is the best time to find their tracks. The trails in fine, dry soil tend to age quickly, especially along riparian areas. Opossums can be found in many environments, including cities and wilderness. They are opportunistic feeders and can utilize many of the scraps people throw away, thus they are often found raiding pet food dishes and garbage cans. When baby opossums are born, each one weighs 1/200 of an ounce, is less than ½ inch long, and lacks fully developed hind limbs. Up to 14 young are born after only 12 to 13 days of gestation. Of these 14 young, only about nine survive. The entire litter could fit into a teaspoon. They climb into the mother's pouch, where they remain for about ten weeks. When they are big enough, they ride around on their mother's back.

Opossums are the only marsupials (pouched mammals) in North America. They breed from January through November and produce two litters per year. The undeveloped young are born 13 days after mating. They crawl to the female pouch (marsupium) and attach themselves to one of the 7-13 teats. Development continues in the pouch for 7 - 8 weeks.
