Opossum
(Didelphis virginiana)
The opossum is a unique Missouri mammal because it is our only representative of a large group of primitive mammals, the pouched mammals or marsupials, that live mostly in Australia. The females of this group typically have a prominent marsupium, or pouch, on the belly where the young are carried and nourished for a time after their birth. The common name, opossum, is a corruption of the Algonquian Indian name, apasum. Description. The opossum is 2-3 feet (609-914 mm) long. Its head is white to yellowish with a pink nose, black eyes and bluish black, naked ears. The long, rather coarse body fur is predominantly grayish white but tends to be darker on the front and hind legs. The long, scaly tail is black at its base, grading to yellowish white or pink for the rest of its length. Opossums weigh 4-l5 pounds (1.8-6.8 kg), males being larger than females.
Distribution and abundance. Opossums live throughout Missouri but are least abundant in the north-western and southeastern parts of the state. Habitat and home.

Fun Facts
Nicknamed the living fossil , the opossum dates back to the days of the dinosaur. The opossum is the only living marsupial (mammal with a pouch) in North America today. Weighing in at 9 pounds, the opossum has a white face, a fuzzy grey body, naked ears, and a scaly, prehensile tail. Prehensile means that the tail is adapted for seizing, grasping, and wrapping itself around objects. The common picture of opposums hanging by their tails is, for the most part, a myth. A young oposum may hang briefly by its tail. But an adult opossum's body is far too heavy to be held suspended by its tail. The opossum actually uses its tail to stabilize its body while climbing. Opossums are not related to rats. They are marsupials and are exceptionally clean. Like cats, they are fastidious and groom themselves. Opossums are extremely resistant to disease. They have a strong resistance to rabies and to snake bites, including rattlesnakes. Opossums are sometimes referred to as the sanitation engineers of the forest. They help to keep the environment clean by consuming carion and all kinds of bugs, including roaches. They help gardeners by consuming snails, slugs, and other destructive creatures. They also eat over ripe fruit before it rots and catch and eat rats. In fact, opossums will eat just about anything. Leave a bowl of cat food or dog food out long enough and you'll probably attract a opposum. But you may never see your extra dinner guest: opossums are strictly nocturnal.

WE HAVE FORMED A PARTNERSHIP!! Dear visitor,
As you may well know, I am the original short tailed opossum pet breeder. I started breeding these delightful critters already in 1988 for my academic research of the sense of smell, which is highly developed in this species. I feel grateful that I had the opportunity to introduce these amazing creatures to other animal lovers, to breed my color varieties , write my opossum care book and develop the excellent ear/tail healing ointment . I have recently partnered with TIM FRASER and between us we have 25 years experience in raising short tailed opossums. We thoroughly spoil all our animals with lots of attention, handling and super foods. If you are looking for a pet of superb health, looks and disposition, you're in the right place: just email us about availability. We know that one (or more) of our pets can bring you tremendous joy and will certainly enrich your life! Dr. Naomie Poran

Opossum General Information Over 70 million years ago dinosaurs roamed the Earth. While they are now extinct, one animal who shared the same land with the dinosaurs still exists today... the opossum Despite its appearance, the opossum is not related to the rat. In fact, the opossum is a marsupial, or "pouched" mammal, and is therefore related to other marsupials such as the kangaroo and the koala. Like kangaroos and koalas, infant opossums stay inside the mother's pouch to nurse and develop. The opossum holds the distinction of being North Americas's only marsupial. Opossums are born after an 11-13 day gestation period. The pink, embryonic-looking infants are so small at birth that 20 could fit into a teaspoon. The infants continue to develop inside the pouch. As they grow and the pouch becomes full, the juveniles then ride on the mother's back until they are old enough to go out on their own. The opossum has an average lifespan of 1 to 2 years. This short lifespan is due in part to the presence of many predators including dogs, cats and people. Sometimes the opossum is able to escape death by "playing 'possum" or feigning death, and in so doing the predator may lose interest in the apparently dead animal and not eat it

Did You Know? Opossums Eat:
Roof Rats
Snails
Cockroaches
Welcome to the opossum care page of Willa's Ark. Opossums are the only marsupial which lives in North America, a mammal which gives birth to her young at the embryonic stage. The babies find their way to a small pouch where they mature, like a kangaroo. They have opposable thumbs on their hind legs, and a prehensile tail to help them climb and keep their balance. And no, they do NOT hang by their tails!
They have existed on this earth for 70 million years. Opossums roamed the earth during the Jurassic period, along with the tyrannosaurus rex. After 70 million years, opossums have undergone very little evolutionary changes. They are essentially immune to rabies, more than any other mammal. Opossums are very useful animals to have in your neighborhood. They love to eat snails, slugs, and insects such as cockroaches and beetles, and even catch and eat roof rats. Opossums also like to eat carrion, helping to maintain a clean and healthy environment. They are very smart, ranking above dogs in IQ, and closer to pigs. Opossums have verymean and intimidating teeth, but their main method of defense is to appear that they are scary. If they are cornered to the point where they think they cannot get away, they will "play dead".

The Virginia Opossum ( Didelphis virginiana ) is the only living marsupial from North America. It is common in the eastern USA and has spread north and west. This large opossum lives in deciduous forests and prairies Virginia Opossums are nocturnal (most active at night). They sleep during the day in a den in a hollow tree or in an abandoned rodent burrow. Playing Possum : When opossums are attacked, they will "play possum," pretending that they are dead; they remain still, do not blink, and their tongue hangs out. This act often makes the attacker lose interest in the opossum. Some of their many predators include foxes and dogs. Anatomy : The Virginia Opossum is about 2.5 feet (76 cm) long, including its foot-long, hairless, prehensile (grasping) tail. This opossum is about the size of a cat. It has a clawless, opposable thumb on each hind foot. The Pouch : The young are about the size of a bee when they are born. Females have a fur-lined pouch on their abdomen into which these tiny, under-developed young crawl. The young live and drink milk from teats in the pouch for about 2 months.

Order Didelphimorphia The opossums are a diverse group of marsupials found in South America with one species, the Virginia opossum, being located in North America (US and Canada). Opossums are about the size of a cat or smaller. They have long, sparsely-haired tails that are typically scaled and prehensile. Most species have pouches. All the toes except for the first one on each hind foot are clawed. The first toe, known as the hallux, lacks a claw and instead has a nail. This toe is partially opposable. Opossums are typically arboreal in nature with one species actually being aquatic. Opossums can be found in thorn scrub, grassland, tropical forests, and urban areas. They are primarily insectivorous or omnivorous in nature. There are 60 species in 1 family: Didelphidae (opossums) 60 spp Back Home

Rat Opossums (Shrew Opossums)
Please choose an animal from the list below:
Order Paucituberculata This small order of marsupials contains five species collectively known as rat opossums. Rat opossums are shrew-like in appearance, and contain many oddities in the marsupial world. For example, the females lack a pouch, sharing this feature with one other marsupial: the numbat. Another oddity is found in the males, as their sperm is paired. This feature is also found in some of the didelphids. No Australian marsupial shares this trait. Rat opossums are gray-brown in colour, with small eyes and a non-prehensile tail. They feed primarily on insects. Rat opossums are found in the forests of the Andes and along the southern coast of Chile in western South America. There were once several families in this order, but most of them are now extinct. An example is family Argyrolagidae. Today, there are 5 living species in 1 family: Caenolestidae (rat opossums) 5 spp Back Home

First printed in the Tallahassee Democrat , April 14, 1997 Nature Notes
by Sandy Beck Photo of mother carrying baby by Bob Beck Amazing but true 'possum tales On the back burner in my mind is a pot full of memorable encounters of the wild kind. The first time I heard a barred owl's haunting call, the wood thrush serenade which awakened my husband and me one morning in North Carolina, and the coyote which trotted across our path at St. Joseph Peninsula state park. Simmering just below my consciousness, they bubble to the surface now and then in moments of reflection. Recently, when I caught the moon-shiney eyes of an opossum on our deck, I recalled the babies I've raised and wondered if she might be one of them. Before I returned to teaching full time, our house was always full of the wild orphans I cared for as a volunteer with St. Francis Wildlife. While attending graduate school at FSU, I sometimes secretly nursed a boxful of baby squirrels or 'possums with one hand while taking notes with the other. That is, until the day a baby opossum grabbed hold of my hair and crawled, one tiny fist over the other, to the top of my head, which must have simulated the security of her momma's back. All eyes were on us, including the professor, who made it very clear that he would not compete with such an "ugly creature."

However, if cornered, these creatures do have many teeth and, as with any wild animal, they may bite, The benefits of opossums far outweigh the problems they cause; but because of their high visibility in our neighborhoods a little knowledge about them may result in greater tolerance of these little nomads. When the young opossums are born, they are little more than embryos. After birth, they crawl into the mother's pouch where they nurse and mature for about 10 weeks, They become independent of the mother at about 3 months of age. Many common opossum sightings involve the mother opossum waddling along with 10 or 12 furry little creatures attached to her. Often the babies fall off, accounting for many "orphans" brought to wildlife rehabbers. Even more frequent sightings involve opossums n roads, having been hit by cars. Concerned citizens are urged to check the dead opossum. If female, there may still living babies inside the pouch. Thousands of baby opossums have been saved by those attentive citizens who have transported the dead mother with her living babies still attached, to the nearest wildlife rehabilitation center. Opossums are perhaps the most fascinating of all the wildlife in our area and are an important and beneficial part of the "wildlife scene".
