Opossums - Habitat
Virginia Opossums (Didelphis virginiana) inhabit the United States east of the Rocky Mountains, Central America, and Pacific coastal North America. The Virginia Opossum is the only marsupial found in the North America. In South America and Australia there are about 80 species of Opossums. Opossums lived during the era of dinosaurs - fossil remains have been found from 70 million years ago. Picture courtesy of

Opossums - Reproduction
The breeding season for Opossums begins in December and may continue through October with most of the infants born between February and June. Like all marsupials, Opossum females have a well-developed pouch. They produce an average of 7 young, once or twice a year (litters of 17 kids have been reported). At birth, the infants are hairless, embryonic-looking, and weigh about 0.1 grams because the period of gestation is 12-13 days and because they are born at a very early stage in their development. Young Opossums have to make a long and difficult journey from the birth canal into the pouch and latch onto a teat. The mother helps by licking the hair leading into the pouch. There are only 13 teats in the pouch and not all may be functional, so the excess infants will not survive. The young open the eyes at around 60-70 days and are weaned at about 100 days of age. Then they are often carried as they cling onto the mother's back. After separation from the mother, littermates may share common dens for some time. Very few young Opossums survive to become adults.

Taking Care of Orphaned Virginia Opossums (5/21/04 R.S. Hines DVM PhD)
Furry opossums are quite easy to raise, if given the proper diet and care. Smaller infants are quite a challenge. Try to find a wildlife rehabilitator in your area with experience with very young opossums. Should you decide to attempt to raise the orphan(s) yourself, this is how I do it:
Opossums that are cold dehydrated and nearly dead when you get them often make miraculous recoveries with subcutaneous fluids. Giving fluids intravenously or intraperitoneally is a last ditch effort and is best left to a veterinarian if done at all.

VIRGINIA OPOSSUM Didelphis virginiana Kerr

Opossums, as a group, are among the oldest, most primitive mammals of the New World. Some scientists call them "living fossils" because they have survived relatively unchanged for at least 50 million years. They are intermediate in many respects between the most primitive of all mammals, the egg-laying monotremes of Australia, and the higher placental mammals. Their chief character is the marsupium or pouch that develops on the abdomen of females. One species occurs in Texas.
Description
A mammal about the size of a terrier dog, with long, scaly, prehensile tail; short, black, leathery ears; long, slender snout; five toes on each foot, the 'big toe" on hind foot lacking a claw, thumblike and opposable; soles naked; pouch for young developed during breeding season on abdomen of female; pelage of long guard hairs and short soft underfur; two color phases - (1) grayish and (2) blackish; basal fourth or more of tail black, terminal section whitish; legs and feet blackish, toes often white or whitish. Dental formula: 1 5/4, C 1/1, Pm 3/3, M 4/4 X 2 = 50. External measurements of males average: total length, 782 mm; tail, 324 mm; hind foot, 66 mm; of females, 710-320-63. Weight, 1.8-4.5 kg; males are usually larger and heavier than females.
Distribution
Occurs statewide except for xeric areas of the Trans-Pecos and Llano Estacado of the Panhandle.

Opossums Opossums are nocturnal, and need a quiet and dark place during the daytime. They are attracted by pet food, ripe fruit, water and snails. They are generally not destructive or predatory. They are usually solitary. They are marsupials, carrying their babies in a pouch, often not making a nest until the babies are several months old. Their breeding season begins in February and can go through November. Opossums can have 3 litters a year. Litters average about 8 young, but can be up to 13. It is not good to feed opossums, either intentionally or unintentionally. Don't leave pet food outside at night, keep ripe fruit picked, keep garbage cans securely covered. Opossums may "play dead" when startled or confronted; they may lie there for up to an hour before coming to and scurrying away. Under House Find the entrance, usually a loose vent cover. Wait until the opossum comes out, then securely close the hole. Make sure there are no babies still under the house. If there are babies under the house, allow the babies to mature until they are old enough to join the mother outside, then close the opening when they have left.

As development of once rural land increases, the opossum continues to be pushed out of its natural habitat and forced into closer proximity to people, often with injurious consequences to the opossum. This is where the Opossum Society of the United States comes in. The Opossum Society of the United States is a non-profit, wildlife rehabilitation and educational organization dependent entirely upon volunteers, membership dues and donations. Our goals are to:
  • Provide for the care and treatment of injured and orphaned wild opossums for release back into the environment. Educate the public about the misunderstood opossum and the benefits the opossum provides. Network and share knowledge and experiences with fellow wildlife rehabilitators and others in the wildlife health field.
We do not condone nor encourage the keeping of opossums as pets.

There are three fundamental ways to get information about opossums: 1) Ask a machine, 2) As a human being who knows something of opossums, and 3) Ask an opossum. Links of the first two types are what you will typically see on the Internet.
Hightail It 'Possum Links (Ask a Machine)
These links are sometimes called Search Engine links. A machine (an engine ) goes out and finds just everything out there that has to do with just about anything - in this case, opossums. That engine just chugs along, finding whatever it can out there on the WEB. 'Possum Network has set things up so that for most of these engines the asking is done automatically. You just click one of the Hightail It 'Possum links and you'll find out what is there. In some cases, however, you'll have to do the asking yourself. For example, to search the 'Possum Yellow Pages:
  • Click on the Yellow Page Possums link. Type opossum as the Business Name you want to find. Select a State in which you want to search. If you want to search in all the States, click on Alabama

    Opossums - Description
The Virginia Opossums is among the most primitive and generalized of Opossums. This animal is about the size of a cat. Its legs are short, with dexterous toes. The muzzle is long, pointed, with small thin, hairless ears. The Opossum's tail is long, prehensile, and nearly naked. Opossums have 50 teeth and is the highest number found in any mammal.
    Opossums - Pets
In most states it is illegal to keep wild Opossums as pets. Opossums that are in the pet market are the descendants of lab animals and are many generations away from their wild ancestors. Wild caught animals may have the potential to spread diseases, however, Opossums are more resistant to rabies than any other mammal. They eat canned cat food with pleasure and they catch flies, cockroaches, beetles, and mosquitoes. Any diet that includes meat or protein products is dangerous for the omnivorous Opossum because it may cause metabolic bone disease. Opossums are clean animals; they wash their hands and face after every meal like cats. Learning and discrimination tests rank the Opossum above dogs. Opossums as pets have some disadvantages. They don't like to be picked up and they are difficult when attempting to place them in their cage. Their cage should be cleaned very often. They need water available at all times and may die without it. Opossums usually sleep during the day and do most of their running around at night. Cases of cannibalism have been reported in Opossums. Usually it's the cause of poor husbandry, overcrowding, stress, improper diet, and the mixing of different sized Opossums.

    Opossums
Webster says: Any of a family of American marsupials, chiefly nocturnal, largely arboreal, and almost omnivorous. Usually has a pointed snout, prehensile tail, and grayish to blackish fur with white on the cheeks. When caught it feigns death.] Newborn opossums run 153 to the ounce. Question: How do you wake up a possum playing possum? Answer: Throw it into water. Opossums rarely hang by their tails, despite the cartoons (and the illustration on this page!). Consider the opossum. If wounded while playing dead, it bleeds very little, if at all. Poisonous snakes that live where opossums live rattlesnakes, copperheads can't kill opossums. Poisonous snakes that don't live where opossums live cobras CAN kill opossums. What's the difference between an opossum and a possum? Possum is an abbreviation for opossum . I know it's only one letter short...but that's all it takes to be an abbreviation. http://www.geocities.com/kashalinka/ReadingRm/factoids/

Wellness in Opossums, 1999 ALL opossums must receive levamisole (a broad-spectrum parasiticide) by injection, early in their hospitalization or orphan care. 1. First injection is given on admission, to opossums over 200 gms, including mothers with infants. 2. Subsequent boosters are usually given 14-21+ days later in juveniles or adults , NOT INFANTS. (NOTE: Captive/pet opossums may only require 1-2 total injections in captivity since infancy and protected from possible sources of infestation). 3. Opossums with hook or whip worms may require boosters sooner (e.g.,' 5-7 days after the first, others as fecals indicate, until cleared). 4. After initial series of 1-3 injections, one must be guided by behavioral or other physical signs. Fecals may still be negative. Illness and trauma are immune suppressive: in the parasitized host, this becomes a double whammy! REGARDING MOTHERS : if the mother is not as healthy as you can help her achieve, HER INFANTS WON'T BE HEALTHY EITHER! Theoretically, other antiparasitics, or even oral Levamisole should be effective. Reality is: They are never going to be as effective in the opossum as Levamisole by injection

About Us Field Projects How You Can Help Publications ... Opossums Opossums
Didelphis virginiana ) is the only marsupial found north of Mexico. Marsupials are distinguished by their unique mode of reproduction: The young are born in an almost embryonic form and make their way to the pouch in their mother's abdomen, where they are nourished for what in other mammals would be most of the gestational period. Opossums are omnivorous and consume an amazing variety of plant and animal foods. Invertebrates, such as insects, slugs, snails, and worms, can comprise a large part of their diet, and they're not above scavenging carrion. Contrary to popular folklore, opossums very rarely raid garbage cans, poultry coops, or gardens. They are most active at night, and they have a habit of ceaselessly moving along the ground in search of food, without following trails or travel routes to places of known food sources. In fact, adult male opossums may wander continuously. Females spend their lives in more defined areas, but still move around almost randomly. Most opossums seen in yards and neighborhoods are likely to move on without human encouragement or intervention if given enough time. Problems and Solutions Opossums are undoubtedly more beneficial to humans as consumers of undesirable insects, snails, and slugs than they are harmful to people for any damage they cause. If you see an opossum in your yard and wonder what, if anything, you should do, the best reaction is patience. The animal will likely move on in short order and should not be a threat or concern. Where an opossum is known to den under a porch or patio, the eviction strategy is much the same as for skunks (click on "Solving Problems with Skunks" below). While it is unlikely that they'll plunder your garden or trash cans, the most effective methods for discouraging visits by opossums or other urban wildlife are to secure trash containers with tight-fitting lids, secure pet doors at night, and pick up food bowls at night if pets have been fed outdoors.
