43. PeoplePlay UK - Ballad Operas
The Beggar’s opera written by John Gay was the forerunner of today’s musicals. It was the first musical show to mix dialogue with songs.

Ballad Operas Burlesques Gilbert and Sullivan English Comic Opera Musical Comedy The Gaiety Girls Chu Chin Chow John Gay John Rich Royal Opera House The Beggar's Opera burlesqued The popularity of was due both to the clever use of familiar tunes and because the main characters were ordinary people with whom the audience could identify. Gay borrowed all the music from popular songs of the time, including broadside ballads, folk tunes and well-known arias by composers like Handel . The play was a satire on politics, poverty and injustice. It also satirised Italian Dramatic Opera which was popular in London at that time. The central moral of the play was that corruption permeates all walks of society. The Beggar's Opera Design The Beggar's Opera Actress Lavinia Fenton, the first Polly Peachum, became a big star and a substantial trade in mementoes and souvenirs grew up around her. In 1729, at the peak of her career, she ran off with the Duke of Bolton. They did not marry until after the death of his first wife 23 years later.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat The story about Joseph begins as a story for some children and is told by a singing narrator.
Joseph and his 11 brothers lives with their father Jacobs and their wifes in the land of Kaanan. Joseph is Jacobs favourite son and the brothers don't like that. They sell Joseph to a man, who sells Joseph to Potifar in Egypt. To Jacob, the brothers say, that Joseph was killed in a fight with a goat.
Jacob is thrown into prison after Potifar's wife has abused him but in the prison he explains to a butler and to a baker what their dreams means and when the Pharaoh of Egypt hears this he want Joseph to interpret his dream. The dream says that there will be seven years with good harvest but after that there will be seven years of crop failure. Joseph is put in charge to collect harvest from the good years and to distribute it during the bad years.
In Kaanan the life is hard and the brothers decide to go to Egypt to get some crop. There they meet the man in charge - Joseph - but they don't recognize him. Joseph recognize his brothers but he doesn't say anything to them. He gives them what they came for but he also puts a golden cup in the youngest brother Benjamin's sack. When the brothers are ready to go back to Kannan Joseph stops them and accuse them of being thieves. They find the cup in Benjamin's sack. When the brothers beg for Benjamin's freedom, Joseph tells his brother who he really is and that he won't throw Benjamin into prison. They all rejoice of seeing their brother again but most of them all Jacob, when Joseph returns to Kaanan to visit his father.
