Minerals do funny things to people.
The rush for rocks whether it be gold, silver, nickel or copper has pushed and prodded the development of Northern Ontario since Carver wrote these words in 1768. Carver's scheme seems hardly practical to our ears, and probably wasn't at that time either. Yet it was a glimmer of things to come, and shows how early the desire for Northern Ontario's natural resources was brewing. The only thing that needed to be overcome was the minor obstacle of getting all that rock to market. Although it's tempting to pin an area's history on a few salient stories, the reality is much more complex. Northern Ontario is no exception. Historically speaking, Northern Ontario has seen fantastic change within a short period, and that condensed path to maturity has created its own problems. This section of the Northern Ontario Toponymic Site looks (very quickly) at the rapid growth of Northern Ontario from two points of view: the public history, and a private one
There are a few distinct junctions in Northern Ontario history, as well as a few significant topics that pop out at us. The recurring theme is the interplay between people and the environment. Although this is true anywhere, it is more apparent in Northern Ontario because of the economic reliance on natural resources, rather than intellectual or finished products. The historical events which prompted the development of the north have reflected this relationship. The huge mineral strikes in Silver Islet, Sudbury, Timmins and Cobalt; the devastating forest fires of the first two decades of this century; and the development of pulp and paper in the north all are dominated by the intrinsic resources of the region.

Ontario has a very diverse history that is rooted in agriculture. That history includes three major contexts: The Ontario Irrigation Colony , which includes the Chaffey Brothers, the Ontario Land and Improvement Company and the Citrus Industry. The Wine Industry, which is predominately in the eastern part of Ontario and was dominated by Hofer Ranch and the Guasti Winery. The Dairy Industry, which is located in the southern portion of Ontario, mostly in what is known as the New Model Colony. Below is a list of histories and historic contexts that have been or are being created. The entire list of histories is included, but not all are available for viewing. As they are completed, the histories and contexts will be added. Histories The Ontario Irrigation Colony The Chaffey Australian Irrigation Colonies Hotpoint / General Electric The C.C. Paralympics Ontario (formerly Sport for Disabled - Ontario) is a non-profit charitable organization that was established in 1981 and incorporated in 1988. SDO has four affiliated Provincial Sport Organizations: Ontario Amputee and Les Autres Sports Association (OALASA)
Ontario Blind Sports Association (OBSA)
Ontario Cerebral Palsy Sports Association (OCPSA)
Ontario Wheelchair Sports Association (OWSA) Paralympics Ontario (PO) is partially funded by the Ontario Government through the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. A volunteer Board of Directors, that includes the Presidents of all four affiliated Associations, governs the organization. One subcommittee of the board is the Ontario Games Council, which is responsible for all games related policies and procedures. PO affiliates more than 20 clubs and 1800 athletes (inclusive of OALASA, OBSA, OCPSA, and OWSA) on a yearly basis. These athletes are given the opportunity to compete in Regional and Provincial Level competitions. For more information on our games program go
