EONTGEN-L is a 'no-cost' email based forum for subscribers to discuss aspects of the
history, geography, and genealogy of people, places, and events
from within the the entire eastern area of the Province of Ontario, Canada. If you have access to a road map of Ontario, locate Toronto, our Province's Capital and principal city, and then travel north east along the north shore of Lake Ontario. When you've located the town of Trenton, draw an imaginary line northward toward Bancroft. From Bancroft extend your imaginary line almost due easterly toward the City of Ottawa, our Nation's Capital, which is located on the Ottawa River. In a generalized sense, everything south and east of this imaginary line, between the Ottawa River on the north and the St. Lawrence River and Lake Ontario on the south are included in the area that we normally designate as eastern Ontario. The following Counties fall within the eastern Ontario area:
and Ottawa/Carleton.

Ontario County Ontario County was taken from Montgomery in 1789, and included all the land of which the pre-emptive right had been ceded to the state of Massachusetts, which that state afterward sold to Phelps and Gorham, and which afterward chiefly passed into the possession of the Holland Land Company and the Pulteney estate. Ontario county then extended from the pre-emption line a mile eastward of Geneva, so as to include within its limits all the territory within the hounds of
this state west of that line. This was commonly known as the “Genesee country,” although the title was occasionally more extensively applied, and from it have been formed the counties of Steuben, Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chatauque, Erie, Niagara, Genesee, Wyoming, Orleans, Monroe, Livingston, Yates, Wayne, in part, leaving to a tract around the former chief town, (Canandaigua,) the name of Ontario. In 1790, this extensive territory had only 1,075 inhabitants. The surface is agreeably diversified, waving in gentle swells and valleys of ample area, with tracts of campaign, and in the southern part more or less hilly. The soil partakes of a considerable variety, but a warm and rich mould forms the greater proportion, while along the borders of Lake Ontario there are tracts of clayey loam, with but a slight admixture of mould. The principal streams are Flint creek, Canandaigua outlet, and Mud creek. The lakes are Canandaigua, Honeoye

HISTORY OF MASSAD ONTARIO
MASSAD ONTARIO was founded in 1948 and closed its gates in 1977. Massad Ontario was a mile down the road from Torrance, Ontario (in Muskoka) on Black Lake (and the water was black from minerals), off highway 169, between Gravenhurst and Bala. It had a small road by the train track hut called "Queens Walk Road", because Queen Elizabeth's train came through there when she apparently took a trip through Ontario many years ago. At the end of every camp session, the camp was split into two groups for a "colour war" known as the Massadia, that lasted about 3-4 days, and consisted of athletic and drama competition, "ruach", art, etc. (Todah Rabah to HartleyG and LyndaKfor the above info!) [edit this] This is no World66 image. It was found using an Internet search. more.. [Change image] [Upload image] Though Canada's history has been relatively short, (the Dominion of Canada was only actually founded in 1867) it has certainly been eventful. Canadians are fascinated by their past and this is reflected in the many historical sites throughout the country. In Central and Eastern Canada, the history entails the early struggles of the first European settlers, and of how the two major cultural groups of the time (British and French) interacted to build a great nation together. In today's highly charged political arena, with on-going talk of Qu©bec independence, this earlier relationship is too often forgotten. The history of Central and Eastern Canada is also very much tied in with the American Revolution, when thousands of people loyal to the British crown crossed the border and settled in these areas in order to remain under British rule. The struggle with the United States continued until after the war of 1812, when an attempted invasion of Canada by the Americans was repulsed. Canada adopted the Statute of Westminster in December 1931, giving it full legislative autonomy within the British Empire. The country emerged as an independent nation within the Commonwealth after the Second World War, and the last legislative link with the U.K. was ended with the patriation of the Canadian constitution in 1982. Queen Elizabeth II remains Canada's head of state, represented by the Governor General.

A collection of materials about the history of Northwestern Ontario are available at the Gateway to Northwestern Ontario History, http://www.nextlibrary.com/tbpl/home.html After you get past the "Do you want English or French?" splash page, you'll get to a main page that's divided into several sections, including History, Mystery, and Links. On the left frame of the page you'll see a listing of over 1,000 photographs in alphabetical order, which is one of the design-nerviest things I've ever seen. Since it was all text it didn't add a lot to load time. If you don't want to browse over 1,000 photographs in alphabetical order with circles and arrows and a paragraph on the back of each waitwaitwait. Sorry. There are no circles. There are no arrows. There are no paragraphs on the back of each one. Instead there is a search engine at the top if you don't want to browse the photographs. Pictures include a 1914 picnic, mines, railroad cars, and aerial views. Photographs open in the main frame and include a decent-sized copy of the photograph and a variety of information about it.

The story of the CCF NDP begins before the founding of the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation in 1932, in the cataclysmic events of the turn of the century, the First World War and its aftermath. We will start in 1919 with the changes in the political landscape that occurred as soldiers returned from four years of futile slaughter, to find that the democratic rights they fought for were still not attained by working people, be they industrial workers or farmers. Women were still in the process of getting the vote - in parts of Canada - and the franchise was still not extended to many aboriginal Canadians, visible minority Canadians, certain religious minorities, or anyone under 21. There was democracy - but only for some. Once in a generation political upheaval takes place in Canada's most populous and stable province, Ontario. The post-war period was one such time. The year 1919 was a time of coming of age for labour politics across Canada as well. In July 1918

History of PBP: Racing and Touring by Robert Lepertel , translated by Johnny Bertrand In 1891 the Petit Journal organized the first Paris-Brest-Paris, a real success judging by the over 400 registrants. Pierre Giffard, head of the newspaper, decided that the event would be held once a decade, given the difficulty of the event-1200 KM on the roads of the day, before the invention of asphalt! Sixteen checkpoints were planned and the headlines of the newspaper read "National Bicycle Race ...". Charles Terront won the race in 71:35 with an average of 17.590 KPH on the way out and 16.780 on the way back. Jiel Laval was second at more than eight hours behind Terront and Coulliboeuf was third. Fewer than thiry finished the race; many coming in days later. In 1911 Emile Georget won in 50:13, beating Lapize by 0:21. Ernest Paul was 0:35 off the pace and Cornet finished fourth. Drafting crews were not allowed, but racers could change bicycles. Tourists were not allowed a change of bikes; as a precaution against cheating, bikes were tagged. In 1931 an Australian won. Hubert Opperman won in a sprint to the finish, beating Marcel Bidot. Sir Hubert Opperman, a dear friend, who's always Oppy to us, keeps in touch. He just celebrated his 83rd birthday on the bike and will surely be happy to help us celebrate PBP's centennial anniversary in 1991.
