The Physical Geography of Northern Ontario To many people, Northern Ontario is simply a huge expanse of lakes, rocks and trees. Lots and lots of trees. In some ways, that impression is right; there are areas of Northern Ontario that are remarkably uniform. Even so, there are distinct sub-regions that we can divide Northern Ontario into, based on underlying physiology, biota or even watersheds. The point is that all of these sub-systems are intertwined. The underlying rock in many ways defines the life capable of surviving on top of it, and all sub-systems are subject to climate. It's like trying to describe the taste of a salad ingredient by ingredient; still, it won't hurt to try. A look at the relief of Ontario (image at left: 200k expanded) gives us a rough view of the major physiographic divisions in Ontario. At the broadest level of first-order realms, Ontario as a whole can be pretty well squeezed into either the Interior Plains, the Hudson Bay Lowlands or the Canadian Shield, with the dividing line going something like this: The Interior Plains
Very little of Northern Ontario falls into the domain of the Interior Plains. Broadly, the only section of Northern Ontario that does is Manitoulin Island. It's this one exception that led Chapman and Putnam to lump Manitoulin with Southern Ontario in

Home About Discover Ontario by canoe or kayak. Whether wilderness camping or staying at lodge, by train or bush plane, fishing or wildlife viewing, seeking solitude or whitewater excitement, Ontario's lakes, rivers and parks are the ultimate vacation destination for adventure travel. It's hardly surprising that Ontario has paddled its way to global prominence as our endless lakes and rivers are disbursed over an area the size of western Europe. Experience Ontario's incredible paddling history and geography through any of the cultural tours offered by our member travel providers and outfitters. Over 800 years ago the people of the First Nations developed the canoe. It was so perfectly designed for its task that its shape remains the same today. In a vast country completely covered with forests, the lakes and rivers were the only sensible routes to travel. This delicate craft was adopted as the primary mode of transportation by the early French and English to explore, trade and settle throughout the continent.

Craig Space Historia : Basic Geography of Ontario
Basic Geography of Ontario
Prominent Features
The most prominent important feature of Ontario is arguably the Great Lakes . The Great Lakes are more like freshwater inland seas than lakes found in other parts of the world. They provide an superb means of travel and trade, and the rich agricultural potential of the region is beyond calculation. When you consider the countless smaller lakes and rivers north of the Great Lakes, the region is well-suited for the development of trading and farming societies, though the winters are harsh. Southern Ontario was the centre of a rich Native cultural zone. Because of the lake system, Southern Ontario is separated by water from the United States, so it is seen as a peninsula , surrounded by water on all sides (except the north). The border separating the U.S. from Canada reinforces this geographical feeling. The Great Lakes basin drains into the Atlantic Ocean via the mighty St. Lawrence River , once called "Canada's Highway". The Canadian Shield occupies most of Northern Ontario (and a big chunk of Canada). The shield is a massive, very stable plate set in the middle of the country. Its precambrian rock is the oldest existing geographical feature in the world. Over time, the hard rock of the shield has been eroded and scraped clean by glaciers, lakes, seas, rainfall and wind. It's pock-marked with thousands of lakes and rivers. The ancient rock is rich in minerals and the land is filled with bountiful primary resources, though the climate is vicious and the environment often hostile to human habitation. It takes a resourceful culture to survive there. Much of it is still totally inaccessible to the modern world.

New York Colony By the late 1600's the British and French were competing for control of the beaver trade in North America. The French occupied the land in the north known as Canada, and in the western half of America. The British settled along the eastern coast working their way inland. In 1700, the British sent a German military engineer named, Col. Romer, to explore the land of New York. His map is shown above. He picked the mouth of the Oswego River as the best place to guard against the the French coming into New York. Link to waterways
