Russ Filman's Hamilton Ontario Canada . . . . . . The Ambitious City! . . . . .
The Throbbing Vibrant Heart of a Nation! E-mail comments to Russ Filman at aa462@hwcn.org Just a note on data from the 1995 Median Employment Income in Census Metropolitan Areas for Canada: Hamilton ranked as the 4th highest median income area after Oshawa (1st), the GM car production town, and Ottawa-Hull (Ontario) 2nd, and Ottawa-Hull (Quebec) 3rd (these two national capital region areas with an obvious bottomless pit to mine for distorted wages). Another factor to consider in choosing Hamilton as a place of residence and employment is the fact that over 38,000 persons are also self-employed representing an 8.7% increase from 1994 to 1995 indicating a healthy source for new job generation, another reinforcement for the claim to be "The Ambitious City". Toronto, where are you back there in the pack trying to avoid bankruptcy, after more than a century of milking the Ontario provincial treasury dry! Government

Ottawa, the capital of Canada is located at the confluence of the Ottawa River and Rideau River, and lies across the Ottawa from Hull . It was initially a rendezvous point for fur traders, explorers and lumbermen. Champlain established a base camp here in 1613 for his future expeditions. The first settlers arrived in 1796, and were later joined by veterans of the Napoleonic Wars and American Revolutionary War. The building of the Rideau Canal in 1826 brought pulp and paper mills to the area. The prosperous lumber village became known as Ottawa, after the Outaouac Indians, and Queen Victoria chose it as the capital in 1857. The National Capital Commission is charged with beautification and development of the city, and maintains the municipal parks, tree-lined streets, and landmarks. Ontario's capital and largest city, Toronto is a mixture of old Victorian-Romanesque buildings and sleek glass and steel skyscrapers. Situated on the shores of Lake Ontario , Toronto has become a major financial, industrial, and cultural center in Canada. The Toronto Stock Exchange is among the largest in North America in terms of volume; the area has one of the highest concentrations of manufacturing capabilities in the country; and it abounds with museums, theaters, and art centers. The Harbourfront Centre has been renovated and is now a showcase for culture, education, and recreation. It includes a waterfront promenade, a nautical center, the Queen's Quay Terminal, and theater and concert facilities. First visited by the Europeans in 1615, the area wasn't settled until 1749 when Fort Rouille was established by the French for fur trading. In 1834 the city was incorporated at Toronto. Tourist information on Ontario
Excerpt from the Ulysses Travel Guide Ontario , by Pascale Couture
Ontario offers remarkable diversity, with its string of charming 19th-century villages, modern, dynamic cities, exceptional natural areas, including Niagara Falls, and vast expanses of wilderness-a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. The second-largest province in Canada in terms of size, Ontario is bounded by Quebec, Manitoba and the United States. But its most remarkable border is that which is delimited by the St. Lawrence River and bodies of water as huge as they are magnificent, namely Lakes Ontario, Erie, Huron and Superior. WHAT TO SEE AND DO… The Great Lakes, fantastic bodies of fresh water surrounded by abundant wilderness, are the first image that springs to mind when one thinks of Ontario, followed by the vast fertile fields at the end of which stand farmhouses charmingly adorned with balconies, shutters and flowers. Then there are the hamlets, which however tiny, are made up of splendid homes, some of which date back more than 150 years. Finally, there are the cities with priceless architectural heritages, silent witnesses to the prosperity of this province, the richest in Canada. Although rural Ontario definitely has plenty to delight romantic souls in search of tranquility and a bygone era, this province also has an eminently modern, urban aspect, as evidenced by the cities of Toronto, Canada's metropolis, and Ottawa, the federal capital.

Southern Ontario Cities Will Perform Well in 2003
OTTAWA, January 14, 2003 – The southern Ontario cities of St. Catharines, Toronto, and London will be among Canada’s top-performing metropolitan economies this year, according to The Conference Board of Canada’s Metropolitan Outlook-Winter 2003 The St. Catharines/Niagara region will post growth of 3.8 per cent in real gross domestic product in 2003, led by a recovery in the labour market late in 2002 and a sound outlook for the construction sector. Toronto will achieve 3.7 per cent growth in 2003, fuelled by growing non-residential construction and broad-based growth in the service sector. In London, a revival of labour market activity will lift growth to 3.6 per cent in 2003, a solid rebound from an average annual growth rate of 0.3 per cent over the previous three years. "With both the manufacturing and tourism sectors posting better results and the construction of Casino Niagara accelerating, St. Catharines/Niagara can look forward to a strong 2003," said Mario Lefebvre, Associate Director, Metropolitan Outlook. "The Toronto economy, which benefited from a strong rebound in the automotive and housing sectors in 2002, will manage to do even better in 2003, thanks to strong growth in non-residential construction and broad-based gains in the services sector."
