Integrating the Internet into the Curriculum
    Creating Successful Internet Projects
As school bells ring around the world each morning, millions of teachers just like you return to their classrooms with a new instructional tool at their disposal the Internet. For the first time, you and your students have the opportunity to experience the promise and the perils of the online world first hand. The promise? You and your students can access up-to-the-minute information. Events that won't be documented in your textbooks for years can be explored on the Internet today. Your students can collaborate with peers and professionals around the world, and even invite electronic mentors to participate in your class projects no matter where they live in real time, no delays! The peril? While the Net holds tremendous opportunities for enhancing the way teachers teach and students learn, it's an enormous, sometimes confusing place. Once you learn how to send and receive email, and mine the Internet for information, one big question remains: How do you use the Internet to its fullest in your classes, so that it becomes a regular, integral part of your day-to-day teaching activities? Many of your wired colleagues are faced with the same question, but there is a solution: Tightly integrate the Internet into your curriculum by creating and participating in educational Internet projects. From keypal (online pen pal) exchanges between classrooms organized by individual educators, to global online expeditions facilitated by multinational publishing companies, Internet projects have quickly become a curriculum staple in wired K-12 classrooms around the globe. Whether it's measuring the levels of pollution in a nearby stream and sharing the data with other classes via email, or tracking the course of a team of explorers via the World Wide Web as they cross the Arctic, these experiences open up the world to students in ways never before available to schools.

Log On and Learn More: Ten On-Line Projects to Enhance Your Curriculum
Looking for ways to introduce technology into your classroom without losing valuable teaching time? Look no further! Education World has found ten terrific on-line projects to incorporate into your curriculum. There's no doubt about it: To compete academically today, and economically tomorrow, your students need to know how to use, and make use of, computer technology. Many teachers made aware of that imperative by in-service workshops, administrative pressure, and parental concern steal valuable curriculum time to engage their students in on-line technology projects. But is that really necessary?

The Fermilab LInC program is an innovative approach to instruction designed to challenge teams of lead teachers, technology coordinators, staff developers and library media specialists to create engaged learning projects that incorporate the best uses of technology . In addition, the participants, as school/district leadership teams, will create a staff development plan for their school or district. After completing the online course and attending the LInC facilitators' academy, participants will team-teach a LInC course in their own region. Our goal is to create a network of educational leaders who effectively use technology to support engaged learning. Selected projects from past LInC courses are available at "http://www-ed.fnal.gov/lincon/". Approximately 140 educators from 50 school districts in 12 states have participated during the 9 semesters that LInC has been offered since November of 1994.

Teach IT Home Getting Started FAQ Cheat Sheets ... Professional Development Welcome to Nortel Networks Kidz Online, a powerful education tool designed to help both teachers and students with their technology needs. That sounds promising, but just a wee bit boring, right?
    WRONG!
NNKOL is anything but boring - it's the full package. It has exciting shows for teens, including narrative education on KTK Live and interviews about careers in technology on Streaming Futures. It has Learning Resources (a fancy name for lesson plans) based on every video to help teachers bring fun and life into the class room. This site also has a channel called Teach IT designed to help teachers learn technology at their own pace in a relaxing and entertaining environment. Every unit we cover, from Digital Imagery to Web Page Creation, has a little something for everyone.
Did we mention that it's FREE?
    How does that work?
Our Education Advisory Board has worked very hard to map out a curriculum outline of units that will be covered by the various channels here at Nortel Networks Kidz Online. Examples of units include: Utilizing the Internet, Web Page Creation, Web Design, Digital Imagery, Power Point as a Multimedia Interface and many others. A full list of currently scheduled units and corresponding videos, is up on our production schedule
Every channel covers the individual units in a unique way.
