Collaboration is the Name of the Classroom Internet Game
By Ken Royal
April 1, 2001 If you're looking for some ways to use computers and the Internet in your classroom or computer room, then you could consider collaboration with a museum, an online expedition, another school or classroom. In this article, I'll share three collaboration examples and I hope that these examples will spark and generate new ideas for collaboration in your own classroom. Opportunities abound, and a simple e-mail may begin a wonderful journey. Collaboration with a Museum Museums, have always shared collections of everything from mummies to spiders, to art, to types of vegetation. They are now faced with the need to take what they do and transform it to the digital world, and yet maintain contact with patrons. After all, a museum without patrons, is just a warehouse. Computers and the Internet are breathing new life into some of the oldest museums in the world. How does one go about finding a museum for collaboration? Well, a simple e-mail to the museum's education representative is a great start. There are some wonderful museums in the area where I teach, but one does not have to remain local to collaborate. I was lucky enough to receive an e-mail about three years ago from a division of the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, in Chicago, asking me if I was interested in taking a look at an online program they were launching, called " States of Science " from the

At times you might want to design your own online collaborative project that is tailored to the needs of your classroom and your learning outcomes. In the beginning of your online work with students it is probably easier to connect with one or two classroom teachers than to try to plan a global project inviting many teachers to join. Plan a small project or activity for your first attempt in joining the online educational world with your students. Don't try to handle more than your time allows. Curriculum Maryland's Content Standards Secondary Social Studies - Core Learning Goals [Maryland]; government, US History and World History While using emerging technologies in the classroom it is important to remember that curriculum is at the heart of what we must teach our students. Use your curriculum guides and plan to use technology as a tool to enhance student learning. As you design your lessons and projects understand the needs of your students in relation to these guidelines and frameworks.

    Abstract
The emergence of online schooling is a recent phenomenon within Alberta. Since 1995, 23 online programs have begun operating in the province. Online education depends on new network technologies to expedite access to information while simultaneously making it possible it to post lessons and course content on the Internet. The development of online programs to address the needs of K-12 students has resulted in duplication of effort among the programs. One solution to the duplication of effort to build course content and the identification of "best practices" for online education is the formation of a provincial consortium. This paper will argue that the formation of a provincial consortium for online education holds many potential benefits for online programs within Alberta.
    Introduction

The TeleLearning PDS supports innovative pedagogy using information and communication technologies (ICT). It is a shared space devoted to the understanding of teaching and learning in network-enabled classrooms, schools, and university-school partnerships. Collaborative reflection on practice, inquiries into learning to teach with ICT, and knowledge building are the main activities. Pre-service teachers, in-service teachers, graduate students, and teacher educators conduct network-enhanced activities at different local sites. They participate in local and regional professional development workshops as well as in major international scientific meetings.
