Geography and Climate Oman borders Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates in the West; the Republic of Yemen in the South; the Strait of Hormuz in the North and the Arabian Sea in the East. The total land area of Oman is approximately 309,500km2 and it is the third largest country in the Arabian Peninsula. Topography an has a variety of topographical features consisting of plains, wadis and mountains. The most important area is the coastal plain, which represents about 3% of the total land area. The mountain ranges occupy about 15%. The Hajar range runs from Musandam in the North to Ras al-Hadd, the extreme limit of the Arabian Peninsula. In the South, the Qara range attracts the monsoon, which brings unique weather conditions and creates a special environment in Dhofar. The remaining area, which occupies 82% of the country, is mainly sand and gravel desert and includes part of the Empty Quarter. Climate The climate differs from one area to another. It is hot and humid in the coastal areas in summer; while it is hot and dry in the Interior with the exception of the higher mountains, which enjoy a moderate climate throughout the year. Rainfall is generally light and irregular; although heavy rain and thunderstorms can cause severe flooding. In the south, the Dhofar region, a moderate climate and a pattern of rainfall is more predictable with heavy monsoon rains occurring regularly between May and September thus transforming this part of Arabia into an oasis of green slopes and mountains peaks that are covered with clouds.

http://imto.humnet.unipi.it/khor_rori.html
Since 1997 a Mission of the University of Pisa
The main goal of the expedition, directed by Alessandra Avanzini, is the study of the history of the region of Khor Rori and the systematic excavation of the ancient port of Sumhuram.
The port of Sumhuram (late 4th BC-4th AD) represents without any doubt the most important pre-islamic settlement in the Dhofar region; founded by the Hadramawt
The last IMTO campaign (2004) confirmed that the city of Sumhuram had got a longer story than we thought previously, and today it is possible to affirm that Sumhuram was certainly the first Arabian city, in the historical period, to weave sea relations with India.
Otherwise the great quantity of iron and bronze which have been discovered, as well as the probable presence of workshop for metals, suggest that the city was a very important centre also in the an internal trade towards south-eastern Arabia and the northern coasts of Oman which was rich in copper.
The city looks out over the Indian Ocean and it is near to the region which produced some of the best frankincense in ancient times. It was also the easternmost outpost of the Hadramawt kingdom on the trade route between the Mediterranean, the Gulf area and India.

    Oman
The small country of Oman occupies a strategic position across the Strait of Hormuz, through which most of the world’s oil supplies travel, from Iran. The country remained a forgotten backwater between independence in 1951 and the coup d’etat that brought Sultan Qaboos bin Said to power in 1971, with only three elementary schools, no road network, no medical system, no telephone network, and few links with the outside world.[ ] At the time of the coup, the country was involved in suppressing a Communist-led rebellion in the Dhofar region, and only settled its border dispute with neighboring Yemen in 1997. The country has pursued a slow and purposeful development program since 1971. Now in the third year of the fifth Five-Year Plan, the country is clean and well-developed (Table 16), with a modern infrastructure throughout the nation. The focus continues to be on sustainable development projects that will gradually reduce the country’s reliance on income from the petroleum sector. Trade plays a key role in the government’s plans. The number of business visitors to the country increased dramatically during the 1990s, and tourist visas were granted for the first time in 1996. The country is becoming more involved in regional politics and business.
