Doing Business in Oman Newsletter Enter email Oman at a Glance Modern Oman His Majesty Sultan Qaboos Bin Said is the country's Head of State. He succeeded his father in July 1970. His accession led to the drive to transform the Sultanate into a progressive modern state using the revenue from the oil first exported in 1967. Oman is now taking stock of the achievements of a period of far-reaching social and economic development. An early priority of this period of development was the establishment of a government capable of administering the development of the country on the economic base provided by oil exports. An ambitious development plan launched by the Government had, by 2001, increased the length of asphalt roads from 10 km to over 9673 km, the number of doctors from 13 to more than 3397 and the number of hospitals from 2 to more than 56.
Development within Oman led also to wider international contacts. Many agreements, particularly with other Arab, Islamic and friendly states, have been ratified and the Government of Oman places particular emphasis on co-operation within the Gulf area. Oman joined the Arab League on 29th September 1971, and on 17th October of the same year became the 131st member of the United Nations Organisation. Oman is also a member of the Group of Non-Aligned Nations. Diplomatic relations have been established with many brotherly and friendly countries. Over fifty countries have resident diplomatic representation in the Sultanate.

for Documentation and Research on Oman and the Arabian Gulf
    Aims and purposes
The Oman Studies Centre was founded in Germany in 1975 as a documentation centre on Oman and the Arabian Gulf. It is an independent, non-governmental and non-profit academic institution which mainly collects information on Oman to assist and coordinate research on Oman and to promote interest in Oman. In line with the Centre's interdisciplinary area studies approach, fields of interest cover a wide range from Oman's history, geography, culture, economy, arts, law, language, natural history and even include more marginal topics such as philately and numismatics.
In particular, the Oman Studies Centre aims at
    • encouraging the study of Oman's history and of the social, economic and cultural conditions in the Sultanate of Oman
    • facilitating access to information and publications on Oman
    • compiling bibliographic references on Oman and preparing bibliographies
    • promoting and coordinating research on Oman
    • providing up-to-date and correct information on Oman to researchers, travellers, journalists and businesspeople
    Geographical scope
The geographical area covered by the Oman Studies Centre is that of the present-day Sultanate of Oman as well as areas which historically belonged to Oman or have been under Omani influence in the past (such as Sahil Uman - now the UAE -, the Makran coast of Iran and Pakistan, Zanzibar, and the East African coast).

Thu, 1 Nov 2001 09:15:41 -0800 (PST) Everybody has a right of an opinion, Freedom of speech. Some views you agree with some views you don't. Some people say the pen is mightier than the sword. The mouse is mightier than both. But be careful about saying 'point and click' in these days of 'terrorism hysteria'. More seriously, there are a lot of international issues which can be remedied, at least to a degree, with better understanding fostered over the world wide web. I'd like to see the Muslim community of North America articulate its "culture of life". I expect the 7,000,000 Muslims of USA come from every one of the OIC countries. They could apply to the administration for a 'faith-based public works grant' to design a model city plus surroundings and create a more positive understanding of Islamic Culture. FWP

Welcome to Oman Oman is a fascinating place! Some visitors to Oman feel as if they are "living" history as they travel throughout Oman. That is because, today, even though most modern conveniences are available in Oman, Omanis have firmly maintained many of the cultural practices of the traditional Omani life: this unique mix of old and new made possible because Oman has come from the Middle Ages to the Modern World in a single generation! Oman has been called "The Land of Legend" and it no doubt deserves this title as Oman has a rich history. In ancient times, frankincense from the trees in the Southern region of Dhofar was worth more than gold and was traded as far away as ancient Rome, Greece, Egypt, and India. The once lost city of Ubar, a center of the trade in frankincense, is being excavated in the Dhofar region today after its ruins were located from satellite imagery. The Holy Quran speaks of the destruction of the people of Hud, and Ubar appears to have been the center of this civilization. The Prophet Job (Ayyub) is also believed by many to be buried just outside the city of Salalah (also in the Dhofar region). Though briefly colonized by the Portuguese from 1507-1650, in the 18th and 19th centuries Oman itself ruled over vast territories including Zanzibar and Mombasa in Africa and colonial outposts in Persia and Baluchistan (present day Pakistan). The Al Bu Said dynasty, which rules Oman to this day, was founded in the 1740s.
