Welcome to Hanover County Reading Olympics What is the Reading Olympics? After four very successful years in Hanover, Reading Olympics is back! This year, the program has expanded to include all the elementary schools in Hanover that serve fourth and fifth grade students. The Reading Olympics is a program designed to promote reading, teamwork, self confidence, and fun! A group of 4th and 5th grade students work as a team to collectively read 42 books over the course of 5 months (from Oct.-March). The books range in reading ability from 3rd to 6th grade in topics such as mystery, historical fiction, biography, and many more. In March, the teams will gather for a Olympic competition. Teams will be asked questions about the books. Teams with correct answers are awarded points that add up to gold, silver, and bronze medals. The medals will be presented at the Olympic medal ceremony in front of the teams and invited guests. All of the participants will receive a medal for their hard work and dedication to reading! The Reading Olympics is graciously sponsored by a grant from the Hanover Education Foundation, the local PTA organizations, and the Hanover County Schools.

T. Rex's Guide to Life Sports The Olympics
General Comments
The Olympics can be a lot of fun, particularly when the country you root for has a chance in many events. The first time I ever paid any attention to the Olympics was in 1984, at the Summer Games. I was so excited that the U.S. was doing so well in so many events. I realized later that the main reason was that all the other top countries were boycotting the games. I got interested again over the next several Summer Games, but not to the extent of 1984. But in 1996, I got really interested again as me and my wife became engrossed in the games. I'm not a big fan of most of the Olympics television coverage, though, as NBC has been pretty bad. Too many excessively cheesy non-sports stories and too much switching between sports makes it difficult to watch for too long. I've also never really been a big fan of the Winter Games, mainly, I guess, because the U.S. has never been that big a competitor in them in my lifetime. Sign Guestbook

Volunteers are Vital
Volunteers are the backbone of the Special Olympics Florida movement. They enable Special Olympics to offer sports training and competition and provide our athletes with the opportunity to grow and showcase their skills. Special Olympics Florida would not exist today without the time, energy, dedication, and commitment of more than 25,000 volunteers. Those year-round and day-of volunteers work at various levels and fill a wide variety of roles in our programs.
Below is a broad description of the activities in which the majority of volunteers participate. This will give you a basic overview of the responsibilities associated with the different assignments and general understanding of the time commitment required.
