Kyle New studies challenge traditional notions about Greek Athletes and why they competed. Many of those watching the Olympics in Atlanta this summer will assume that the modern games are a true reflection of the ancient ones, that the events and ceremonies and the ideology of universal brotherhood and amateurism recall the Olympics of Greece's golden age. A generation ago scholars simply accepted such idealistic notions about who these athletes were and why they competed. Now, we are demythologizing the ancient Olympics, testing and revising ancient literary accounts of how athletes trained, worshiped, competed, won, and celebrated, and how they were motivated, rewarded, and honored. By the sixth century athletes were specializing in particular events and hiring coaches. Training was intensive and there were experiments and fads concerning diet, exercise, and sex. Athletes from Kroton in southern Italy believed in the value of a meat diet and saw the consumption of beans as taboo. Milo of Kroton, the greatest Olympic wrestler, reputedly ate 40 pounds of meat and bread at one sitting, washing it down with eight quarts of wine. The basic equipment of an athlete consisted only of an unguent jar (aryballos) of oil and a scraping instrument (strigil) for anointing and cleaning himself, though for various events a competitor might need boxing thongs, jumping weights, discus, or javelin. He had no shoes, no jockstrap, no uniform, and no endorsements.

The Ancient Olympic Games
by B. Huberty and S. Hudzik
The Olympics were a celebration of the almighty Zeus, the powerful King of the ancient Greek Gods. As in the modern games, these great contests brought athletes from many countries, including those from Africa and Spain. (Swaddling, 1984) There is only disputed evidence as to when the first Olympic Games were held. There are records that show the first games took place in 776 B.C.; however, there is evidence to the contrary. Greek festivals celebrating religion, music, and athletes are thought to have occurred perhaps centuries before that date. (Girardi, 1972)
How they began
How the games started is also a matter of great speculation. There are two main tales or myths that describe the founding of the Olympics, both occurring in Olympia, Greece. The first tale is of Pelops, a suitor seeking Hippodamia's hand in marriage. King Oeomaus, Hippodamia's father, challenged anyone who wished to marry his daughter to drive Hippodamia away in a chariot faster than the King can catch them. Thirteen brave suitors tried this feat, and they all failed, resulting in death by King Oeomaus' spear. The tricky Pelops, however, managed to bribe King Oeomaus' servant to rig the king's chariot with a faulty axle. As Pelops and Hippodamia were driving away, the King's chariot axle gave way and he fell to his death. Pelops then had a wedding celebration, including athletic contests, with his fellow Olympians. Supposedly, those contests were the first Olympics. (Kieran, Daley, and Jordan, 1977)

What is the origin of the Olympics?

The Olympic Games, originally created to honor Zeus, was the most important national festival of the ancient Greeks, and a focus of political rivalries between the nation-states. However, all competitions involved individual competitors rather than teams. Winning an Olympic contest was regarded more highly than winning a battle and was proof of an individual arete or personal excellence. The winners were presented with garlands, crowned with olive wreaths, and viewed as national heroes. Although records of the Olympics date back to 776 BC when the Olympics were reorganized and the official "First Olympiad" was held, Homer's Iliad suggests that they existed as early as the 12th century BC. The games were held every four years in honor of Zeus, in accordance with the four year time periods which the Greeks called olympiads. Emperor Theodosius I of Rome discontinued them in the 4th century AD, and they did not occur again until they were reinstated in Athens in 1896. Originally, the Olympics was confined to running, but by the 15th Olympiad, additional sports were added the pentathlon (five different events), boxing, wrestling, chariot racing, as well as a variety of foot races of varying lengths, including a long-distance race of about 2.5 miles.

T he Olympics are one of the oldest organized athletic competitions in history. Begun in 776 BCE, the Olympic games were for the first 52 years merely a one-day festival in honor of the gods, ending with a single foot race. The festivities grew over the years and became five-days of ceremony, competition and celebration. The Olympics were so important that all wars between Greek states were halted for a three month period, to allow safe travel for the athletes and spectators that travelled from the far reaches of the ancient Greek world, as far away as Italy and the coasts of Africa and France. Athletes trained for many months and were honored to represent their states and pay homage to their gods. The events of the ancient Olympic games changed over time, but they were at their height around 400 BCE, when Olympia had magnificent buildings, statiums and works of art. Learn More!

LONDON (Reuters) Spectacle, violence and myth mingled every fourth summer for more than 1,000 years in the ancient Olympic Games to celebrate the Greek passion for competitive sport. Controversies and dramas chronicled by the poets and dramatists abounded during that astonishing span of uninterrupted competition starting when Corobeus streaked naked across the line in Olympia in 776 B.C. The earliest Greek sporting account to survive appears in Homer's Iliad. Achilles organised a series of events including chariot races, a foot race, boxing and wrestling to accompany the burial rites of his comrade Patroclus, killed by Hector before the gates of Troy. Olympia, a shrine to Zeus in the fertile district of Elis southwest of Athens, was one of hundreds of sites devoted to religious festivals. The stadium was situated near the temple of Zeus, where the gold and ivory statue of the principal god of the Greek pantheon, sculpted by Pheidias, was one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. According to legend, the greatest of the mythical heroes Hercules, the demigod son of Zeus, made a clearing in the grove and instituted the first Olympic Games to celebrate the success of one of his 12 labours, cleaning the stables of King Augeas of Elis.

History and Geography of the Olympic Games in Ancient Greece by Rick Price, PhD. co-owner and co-founder of ExperiencePlus! Specialty Tours, Inc. The Olympics came to us as one of the oldest institutions of Classical Greece. Although the first written record of the games dates to 776 B.C., their origins go back at least five hundred years earlier and are linked to religious events well before that. The games honored Zeus, supreme god of all the Greeks and ruler of the sky (Zeus's brothers Poseidon and Hades ruled the sea and the Underworld, respectively). The Olympic games were officially abolished by the Roman emperor in 394 AD after a run of 1170 years! As god of all kings and of all humans, Zeus ruled from lofty Mt. Olympus north of Athens. His primary role was to keep the peace among those same gods and "men" on earth. In his honor a universal truce applied during the Olympic Games every four years and even though the truce was broken on several occasions, the games were never interrupted as a result of war. The reasons for the location of the games in "Olympia," near the west coast of the Peloponnesian peninsula are lost in history. The site was never a major city or permanent settlement except during the games themselves when tens of thousands of spectators and participants camped on the grounds. Evidence suggests that the site of Olympia was once the location of a religious festival honoring Gaia, the Earth Mother. Indeed, the site must have had strong historic and religious roots as it is located on the western edge of Classical Greece far from the Greek heartland as this

The Ancient Greek Olympics According to tradition, the ancient Olympics began in 776 BC . Many aspects of Greek lifestyle including their religion , sport, warfare , and their insatiable interest in competition or "Agon" lay the foundation for what became the Olympic Games. Before the Olympics began, Greeks participated in a number of athletic events but did not have the organization that was brought on by the games. The Greeks at this time inhabited not only the mainland of Greece and the nearby islands, but also lived in other countries further away including Italy, Sicily, Egypt , and Libya. At this time large gatherings of people were infrequent with the exception of religious festivals . It was at these festivals that people assembled peacefully and with a common interest : to celebrate their livelihood and please the gods The Olympics originated in Olympia and were held every four years. Olympia, which is located in southwestern Greece near the Ruphia River, was a meeting place for large numbers of people for religious festivals. Many of these people were athletes. Influences

T he origin of the Olympic Games is linked with many myths referred to in ancient sources, but in the historic years their founder is said to be Oxylos whose descendant Ifitos later rejuvenated the games.
According to tradition, the Olympic Games began in 776 B.C. when Ifitos made a treaty with Lycourgos the king and famous legislator of Sparta and Cleisthenes the king of Pissa. The text of the treaty was written on a disc and kept in the Heraion.
In this treaty that was the decisive event for the developement of the sanctuary as a Panhellenic centre, the "sacred truce" was agreed. That is to say the ceasing of fighting in all of the Greek world for as long as the Olympic Games were on.
As a reward for the victors, the cotinus, which was a wreath made from a branch of wild olive tree that was growing next to the opisthodomus of the temple of Zeus in the sacred Altis, was established after an order of the Delphic oracle.
