As in the modern games, these great contests brought athletes from many countries, including those from Africa and Spain. (Swaddling, 1984) There is only disputed evidence as to when the first Olympic Games were held. There are records that show the first games took place in 776 B.C.; however, there is evidence to the contrary. Greek festivals celebrating religion, music, and athletes are thought to have occurred perhaps centuries before that date. The Ancient Greek Olympics Part 2: The Games They Played The Olympics of ancient Greece weren't exactly the worldwide spectacle that we have today. For one thing, only Greeks took part. For another, only nine events were featured.
  • Boxing: Those who boxed wore a sort of glove made of straps of soft ox-hide. They didn't fight people of similar weight; opponents were chosen at random. Boxing matches had no time limit and ended only when one boxer held up his hand or fell to the ground. Discus: The throwers of the discus originally threw a circular stone and then later a circular shape made of iron, lead, or bronze. The movements and techniques of ancient discus throwers were very similar to those of today's athletes. Equestrian Events: Horse racing took place in a hippodrome, a large stadium that contained a racetrack very much like today's track and field ovals. The athletes would ride in war chariots that were fitted to either two or four horses. (Even with four horses, only one man rode in the chariot.) The races numbered three, eight, or 12 times around, depending on the age of the horse. Javelin: The javelin of ancient Greece was made of wood and was about as tall as an average man. The javelin throwers of this time also attached a piece of leather called a

Olympia
The most common question asked about the 2004 Olympics is "Do you think Greece can pull it off?"
That's a tough question. Those with a cynical attitude towards the Greeks and their laid-back attitudes about life believe that it is impossible and the Olympics in Athens will be a disaster if they even materialize. They point to the chaos of modern Athens and what they describe as Byzantine politics and an Olympic commitee whose main agenda seemed to be the drapes in their offices instead of construction that was falling dangerously behind schedule. Some point to Salt Lake City and the scandals there and say "If the religious state of Utah can be corrupted by the money that the winter Olympics can bring in, what about Greece, where large sums of EEC money for social and infrastructure improvements end up in Swiss bank accounts and polititians and officials first order of business is to make sure they are financially secure before they worry about the needs of their constituents." But I believe the Olympics can be pulled off because I think the country is changing. I think the Greek attitude towards corruption and incompetance is being altered by the scrutiny Greece is receiving because of incidents in the last couple years. The anti-NATO demonstrations, the Clinton Riots and the sinking of the ferry boat Samina have made many Greeks realize that a handfull of idiots are making the whole country look like jerks. Because of this the Greeks are determined to pull off these Olympics and prove to the world and themselves that they are not one step away from being Third World, but they are a serious partner of the larger countries who are forging the future. They completed the Metro (almost), and even if they did forget to put in air-conditioning they have proven that some things can get (almost)done in Greece.

    The Ancient Olympics Were Commercial
Many modern critics contend the Olympics are too commercial . Apparently little has changed. Cheating and bribery were so common at the ancient games that statutes warning against dishonesty were set up along the road to the stadium. Successful athletes were celebrities. Medals and poems were commissioned to celebrate winners. Towns erected statues in honor of their local champions. Around 200 A.D., the leading citizens of Syracuse bribed an Olympic victor, Dikon, into saying he came from Syracuse, when in fact he came from Caulonia.

Olympic News Invite your students to imagine that it is 500 BC and they are citizens of Olympia. It is their responsibility to create a newspaper for those coming to the games! To begin, discuss the important sections of a newspaper, such as news, weather, and sports. Then challenge teams of students to cover one of these sections for your Olympic newspaper. News writers can report on special preparations, sports writers can interview star athletes, and style writers can cover what's hot at the celebration banquets. Encourage your newspaper staff to do research so that their stories are as accurate as possible. When finished, kids can compile the stories and print enough issues for all to read.
Pentathlon Research With this activity, your students will research the exciting pentathlon and learn about one way the Olympics have changed throughout history. First, invite one half of your class to research the ancient pentathlon and the other half to study the modern version. Then encourage the groups to use the Internet to find out more about the participants and judging of each of the five events (try the excellent

64.61-78 The Ancient Olympics by Cleanthis Palaeologos, Honorary Director of the National Academy, of Physical Culture of Greece. Proclamation - The Truce - The Organisation - Arrangements for the Contests - The Events. Part I The rich mythology which decorates both the derivation and the consecration of one of the greatest institutions in the progress of mankind, known as the Olympic Games, as also their history and their resplendent rays during twelve centuries, as well as the enforced extinction of the Olympic Flame, were subjects of earlier talks of mine at Sessions of the Olympic Academy. On this occasion I will describe their proclamation, the truce, the organisation of the ancient Games, the arrangements for the contests, and the carrying out of an Olympiad, with as much detail as the time available allows me, so that I can give my audience a general idea of the immensity and significance with which these great Games were held in antiquity. 1. The Spondophori. The Olympic Heralds. Select official citizens of the region of Elis, accompanied by a brilliant retinue of the nobility of Elis, set out for all directions of the land, to proclaim that the rituals for the ceremonials of the Olympic Games were starting. They were called "Spondophori" and they proclaimed the Games, that is to say they announced them. They arrived at the City States as official representatives of the region of Elis, while the nobles of the Cities received them with honours and accepted the proclamation. From that moment the operation of the Truce was in vigour.

Pausanias the Greek (2nd century AD)
This is the statue of the god in whose honor the Ancient Olympic games were held. It was located on the land that gave its very name to the Olympics. At the time of the games, wars stopped, and athletes came from Asia Minor Syria Egypt , and Sicily to celebrate the Olympics and to worship their king of gods: Zeus
Location
At the ancient town of Olympia, on the west coast of modern Greece , about 150 km west of Athens
History
The ancient Greek calendar starts in 776 BC, for the Olympic games are believed to have started that year. The magnificent temple of Zeus was designed by the architect Libon and was built around 450 BC. Under the growing power of ancient Greece, the simple Doric-style temple seemed too mundane, and modifications were needed. The solution: A majestic statue. The Athenian sculptor Pheidias was assigned for the "sacred" task, reminiscent of Michelangelo's paintings at the Sistine Chapel For the years that followed, the temple attracted visitors and worshippers from all over the world. In the second century BC repairs were skillfully made to the aging statue. In the first century AD, the Roman emperor Caligula attempted to transport the statue to
