OLYMPIC HISTORY Shooting had a friend in the highest of places when the Modern Olympic Games opened in Athens in 1896. None other, in fact, than Pierre de Coubertin, who was a pistol shooting champion for France. The first president of the International Olympic Committee introduced four pistol and two rifle events at the first modern Olympiad. The sport has featured at all bar two Games since, St Louis in 1904 and Amsterdam in 1928 not having staged shooting events. His record-breaking did not stop there, however, and over two days at the Stockholm Games of 1912 he established two more Olympic milestones which have stood the test of time. First, he became the oldest medal winner in an individual event, by taking the bronze in the Running Deer, double-shot at the age of 64 years and 256 days; then, he became the oldest ever gold medal winner when triumphant as a member of the Swedish Running Deer, single-shot team at the age of 64 years 257 days.

Our sport is still called Boardsailing in Olympic jargon and was a demonstration sport at the 1984 Games in Los Angeles and an Olympic event at each Games since. 1984 - Los Angeles, USA 1988 - Pusan, Korea 1992 - Barcelona, Spain 1996 - Atlanta, USA 2000 - Sydney, Australia Due to the big equipment performance differences found in other windsurfing classes Olympic Class Boardsailing is possibly the most pure type of athletic sail racing in the world - a real Olympic sport. Sadly, it is and possibly always will be little understood. Like all small craft sailing classes, the best informed spectators are the competitors. It has taken twenty years of two steps forward and one back for Olympic Boardsailing to get to the level it is now. As a consequence of the Olympic Boardsailing Class's current achievements, governments are allocating a lot of funding towards growing the sport. The current Olympic Class is a great asset to the sport of windsurfing. Let's look after it and keep the current Olympic Class for at least another Olympiad.

MORTIZ, SWITZERLAND, FEB. 11-19, 1928 Numerous falls troubled Thompson and Putnam on the icy 18 kilometre course as they settled for 37 th and 40 th spot among 44 finishers in 2:12:24 and 2:22:40 respectively. Norwegian Hohan Grottumsbraaten took gold in 1:37:01, reflecting the lack of major trail preparations other than marking them in the ‘good old days’. Putnam concluded his Olympic thoughts with, "Although outclassed, Canada was by no means disgraced. Given a few more years, we will surely give our Norwegian friends a great run for premier honours." San Diego’s four "Team del Sol" synchronized skating teams ( senior intermediate teen introductory adult ) are based in San Diego, one of Southern California’s most popular vacation destinations. Get more information about the sport of synchronized skating (such as rules and regulations, divisions, elements, and the new name change) HERE ! Formerly known as the Icettes (senior/junior), Sun Blazers (novice/intermediate), and Starlites (juvenile), our teams changed their name to Team del Sol in 1997 to reflect San Diego’s Spanish heritage. Team del Sol translates from Spanish to "Team of the Sun."
With an average year-round temperature of 70 degrees, ice skating is uncommon in San Diego. The availability of surfing, volleyball, golfing and other year-round sports often makes it difficult to find skaters with the ability to perform at the National and International level, however we have built a precision program that has grown and strengthened since it began in the late 1970's as a "drill team." We competed in the very first Nationals, which was held in Bowling Green, Ohio in 1984, and we've been going strong ever since! We have been Pacific Coast Gold Medallists since 1985. The Juvenile team achieved the Bronze medal at the National Championships in 1986. Since that time we went through a period of building depth. Now, team members that were on our juvenile team have developed into masterful senior division skaters, giving the quality needed to perform at the national and international levels. The goal has been, and continues to be, to develop a solid foundation to achieve national titles in all four divisions and to compete in the international arena.
