History of Women's Sport
"The solemn periodic manifestation of male sport based on internationalism, on loyalty as a means, on arts as a background and the applause of women as a recompense." - Baron Pierre de Coubertin, founder of the modern Olympic Games. Since Baron de Coubertin uttered those words in the late 1890's, the world has changed almost beyond recognition. Instead of merely applauding the achievements of others, women now wish to share the spotlight. MILESTONES Women's Sport from 440 BC to 1998 The Women's Olympic Games of the 20's and 30's
Bruce Kidd writes, "The Women's Olympic Games have long been forgotten, but during the 1920s and 1930s they were an important, international focal point for feminist efforts to improve women's sporting opportunities."
Velma Springstead died before she was 20
but her name is still prominent for Canadian sportswoman. In 1932, Alexandrine Gibb and the WAAF named the trophy to annually honour the best Canadian female athlete after Springstead, linking her with the highest levels of athletic achievement ever since. For the third straight Olympic cycle, the USA picked a new coach to lead the team to glory. This time it was John Vargas, an assistant under Corso and a member of the 1992 Olympic Team. Unlike Corso, Vargas inherited a team of returning veterans who immediately demonstrated their capabilities by winning the FINA World Cup in Athens, Greece in 1997. "This was one of the truly great teams in US history," said assistant coach Monte Nitzkowski, when he joined the staff in 1998. "We're strong in the critical positions. We've got speed, strength, size, great outside shooting and were solid in the cage." Team USA opened the Sydney tournament in the toughest bracket, grouped with medal favorites Croatia, Yugoslavia and Hungary. Going into the Games, Vargas felt that win or lose, the early games would give the US a bit of an advantage heading into the quarterfinals. Learning from the experience in Atlanta, he said, "it all comes down to the quarter-finals." First up, the 1996 Olympic silver medallists from Croatia coasted to a 7-2 half-time lead and held on for a 10-7 win.

History of Women's Water Polo in the USA
Women's water polo was played regularly in the United States until 1926, when the Nationals were won by the Los Angeles Athletic Club. After this time, the sport was considered too rough for women, and no Nationals were held for 35 years. The Ann Arbor Swim Club, coached by Rose Mary Dawson, was instrumental in reviving the sport. Ann Arbor, later coached by John Urbanchek, 1996 U.S. Men's Olympic Swimming Assistant Coach, won the Nationals in 1961 through 1963. The goalkeeper for Ann Arbor was Micki King, later a United States Olympic diving gold medallist. Northern Virginia Aquatic Club won seven national titles from 1964-69, although on the West Coast, Santa Clara Swim Club, with Pokey Watson Richardson and Claudia Kolb Thomas, both Olympic gold medallists in swimming, took two indoor titles in 1965 and 1966. Water polo was introduced into Florida by Rob DeVust in the late 1960s, with Florida teams winning the majority of the national championships from 1971-75, although the Cincinnati Marlins won the Indoors in 1974 with a team including Deena Deardurff and Jenny Kemp, both Olympic swimmers. Anaheim, later to become FAST (Fullerton Area Swim Team), coached by Stan Sprague, the 1978 National Team coach, won the Indoor Nationals in 1975 and 1977 and the Outdoors in 1976. Sainte Foy, from Quebec, Canada, coached by Claude Lavoie, won the 1976 Indoor Nationals. Merced, coached by Flip Hassett, the 1979 National Team coach, won the 1977 Outdoors. The 1978 and 1979 Indoor Nationals were won by Long Beach. Kelly Kemp coached these fine players from 1976 to 1978.

The lure of Olympic medal glory in softball's history-making debut at the Atlanta Games was the driving force behind Nicole Richardson's international sporting choice. Once her name was inked onto softball's Olympic team list, the juggling of two international careers was over. Australian squad selection in netball was put on hold. Richardson and her Australian teammates are pursuing an achievable sporting dream - winning an Olympic medal. Bouyed by a world ranking of Number three behind the United States and China, Australia is now considered a powerhouse in women's softball and a definite medal contender. Their bronze medal performance at the 1994 World titles in Canada became the launching pad for national coach Bob Crudgington to finetune a medal-winning combination for the Atlanta Games. Australia's greatest nemesis is World Champion and gold medal favorites, the United States, which has dominated the sport for the past decade. The gap between the countries is narrowing, but Australia hasn't defeated the host nation since the early 1980s.

As swimmers gain experience, they are provided opportunities to compete further afield, across Canada and perhaps internationally. highlights Over the past few years, Brock Niagara highlights include:
