Recorded history of the Games dates back to 776 B.C., when the five days of sporting events were primarily religious ceremonies. Held every four years, the Olympic Games attracted as many as 40,000 spectators, who slept on the ground, conducted their worship, and cheered the athletes. For the first known 13 Games, the competition consisted of single foot race of 200 yards, which was the approximate length of the Olympic stadium. The Games were so important that a four-year interval between them came to be known as an "Olympiad." The Games expanded to include additional contests and reached their height by fifth century BC Only men were allowed to compete, in the nude, in running, wrestling, the pentathlon, horse riding and chariot races. Women were barred from watching or competing, and were even put to death if they were caught at the early Games.

These games ran from 776 B.C. to 195 A.D. and attracted participants and spectators from all over the Greek World. On the surface, the games were an athletic contest. Actually, however, it is important to point out that they were held in honor of the highest ranking god, Zeus. During the time of the games (approximately one month), participants were not allowed to take up arms against one another. BARON PIERRE DE COUBERTIN
Father of the Modern Olympic Games
Coubertin was the idealist whose dream led to the modern Olympic Games. He was born in Paris of an aristocratic family and was educated in the arts, sciences and law. He was not an athlete, but an educator and sportsman who believed that competing for a place on an athletic team built character. The Baron was the leading organizer of the Olympic movement and served as the President of the International Olympic Committee until 1925. He died a relatively poor man in 1937 and his heart was taken to Olympia, the site of the Ancient Olympic Games, and buried in a monument erected in his honor. Coubertin became interested in the ancient Olympic Games because of archaeological work being done at Olympia, Greece, by German teams in the 1870s. Traveling to England and America, he slowly generated interest in the Games and finally, in 1896, the first Games became the sports spectacular of our times.
THE COMMEMORATIVE MEDAL
The design and manufacture of the medal is the responsibility of the Host City; consequently, many of the designs include local landmarks or geological features, the Games Logo, stylized snow of ice flakes and/or some form of Olympic lore. These medals, in contrast to the victors' medals, are presented to all athletes and officials of the Games.

Submit A Special Request The Modern Olympic Games "The idea of the revival of Olympic Games was not a passing fancy: it was the logical culmination of a great movement. The 19th century saw the taste for physical exercises revive everywhere ... At the same time the great inventions, the railways and the telegraph have abridged distances and mankind has come to live a new existence; the peoples have intermingled, they have learned to know each other better and immediately they started to compare themselves. What one achieved the other immediately wished also to endeavour: universal exhibitions brought together to one locality of the globe the products of the most distant lands; Literary or scientific congresses have brought together, into contact, the various intellectual forces. How then should the athletes not seek to meet, since rivalry is the basis of athletics, and in reality the very reason of its existence?"

E-Mail: c.ogleby@eng.unimelb.edu.au Abstract In conjunction with the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, and the associated Cultural Olympics, the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences (also known as the Powerhouse Museum) is hosting an exhibition 1000 Years of the Olympic Games - Treasures of Ancient Greece. Two integral components of this exhibition were virtual reality based displays, one on the reconstructed ancient city and another on the Statue of Zeus/Poseidon from the National Archaeological Museum in Athens. This paper will present the techniques and experiences used in the production of a 3d immersive narrated tour of the ancient city, and the development of the associated material for presentation on the Internet. It will also detail the approaches undertaken to digitise the Statue of Zeus using an hand held laser scanner, and the processing of this data into a high resolution model suitable for interactive display. It will cover the exhibition design process, and the technology employed to give museum visitors a 3d experience of the ancient environment of Olympia. The project has received substantial media coverage, and the exhibition has also been short-listed for a BAFTA award for the associated web site, and has won the best virtual world heritage award at the VSMM conference in Japan.

Section 2 Unity, Peace, Friendship: The Modern Olympic Games The Origins of the Modern Olympic Games The Olympic Family The Olympic Hall of Fame The Olympics in Asia The Origins of the Modern Olympic Games
The rise of political and economic internationalism in the latter half of the 19th century was reflected in athletics, which also manifested tendencies towards internationalization. The internationalization of sports became a major factor behind the rebirth of the Olympic Games in the modern age. The Olympic revivalism of the period was driven by such things as the steadily increasing sporting exchanges between nations and the archaeological craze for ancient Olympic artefacts.
It was at this time that the man at the heart of Olympic revivalism appeared: Pierre de Coubertin. It was Coubertin, more than anyone else, who realized the dream of bringing back the Olympic Games. He pointed out the importance of the ancient Olympic spirit to the promotion of athletics, which had by this time taken on an increasingly international character. On 23rd June 1894, Coubertin founded the International Olympic Committee (IOC), thus inaugurating the process of reviving the Olympics. His effort paid off in 1896 when the first Olympic Games of the modern era were held in Athens. Thus was inaugurated a new era in the annals of human civilization.

Ask almost anyone when the modern Olympics began and you will be told that the ancient Greek games were revived in Athens by French Baron Coubertin in 1896. What you most certainly will not be told is that Coubertin was inspired by the events he witnessed at Much Wenlock, a little village in Shropshire, just over the Welsh borders. In 1890, in an article for a Greek magazine, Coubertin stated the following: Much Wenlock is a town in Shropshire, a county on the borders of Wales, and if the Olympic Games that modern Greece has not yet been able to revive still survive today, it is due not to a Greek, but to Dr. W.P. Brookes. It is he who inaugurated them 40 years ago, and it is he, now 82 years of age, but still alert and vigorous, who continues to organize and inspire them.

The first recorded Ancient Olympic Games were in 776BC. They lasted for approximately 1000 years.
Place
The Games were held in Olympia, a village in a sacred valley, approximately 500km south west of Mount Olympus.
Purpose
The Ancient Olympic Games were held as a religious, sporting and cultural festival in honour of Zeus, the father of the gods.
Philosophy
The Ancient Greeks believed that both the body and mind needed discipline and that those who practised this discipline could best honour Zeus.
The Ancient Olympic Games
  • These Games were held every four years
Only Greek citizens were allowed to compete. Ancient Greece was divided into independent states, often at war with each other. During the Games there was an official truce, called Ekecheiria.. This meant athletes could travel safely to and from the Games. Violation of this truce was punishable by death.
The Marathon The modern marathon is one event which originated in these Ancient Games. Legend has it that Miltiades, a Greek General with an Athenian army, fought and won a battle against the Persians. He called for an Athenian runner and asked him to carry the victorious news back to Athens. The runner's journey was 24 miles but he entered the streets of Athens and shouted 'Rejoice! We conquer!' He then dropped dead. Although the accuracy of this tale is questionable, the first Modern Olympic Games in 1896, included the marathon to commemorate this legend.
