The excellent book Oops! by Paul Kirchner (1996, Rhino Records, pages 106-107) offers a fairly detailed summary of the St. Louis Marathon. Two articles from the New York Times were valuable in the preparation of this story: The first, titled "Olympic Games of 1904" appears in the Wednesday, July 20, 1904 issue and summarizes the preparations made for the Olympic Games. Since readers probably were not familiar with the Olympics at the time, the article details a history of the games. The second article, titled "American Runner Wins" was featured in the August 31, 1904 issue on page 5. This story details the marathon and Lorz's eventual disqualification. The May 15, 1996 issue of Newsday features an article titled "Olympics in the Political Arena: Clinton to be no stranger to Atlanta" profiles the role that United States Presidents have played in the Olympic Games. A brief summary of the 1904 games is given. If you are looking for details, details, and even more details on all of the Olympics, be sure to check out The Complete Book of the Olympics by David Wallechinsky. There are many updated editions of this book which is published by Penguin books.

Olympic fortress: Pentagon pulls out stops for safe Games
(CNN) Forget an ounce of prevention. Think tons. Vault-like. Whatever conjures images of impenetrability or extreme defense, the Pentagon has provided it in Salt Lake City, Utah, to make the Winter Olympics as safe as possible. As the hour nears for the Opening Ceremony on Friday night an event President Bush will attend the local airport will halt all air traffic. The same will happen during the closing ceremony. Starting Friday, airspace will be restricted in a 45-mile radius around Salt Lake City. All small aircraft will need special clearance to land there, and they will first have to travel to one of four nearby gateway airports and undergo security sweeps. Monitoring airspace over the 110-by-35-mile swath of Utah where Olympic events will be held is a major part of the overall effort. The North American Aerospace Defense Command will conduct combat air patrols over the area, using F-16 fighters.

Controversial Olympic Games draw to a close
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (CNN) They were touted as the most secure Games in Olympics history, but they may well be remembered as one of the most contentious. First came the international uproar surrounding the pairs figure skating finals, when judges bypassed the Canadian team in favor of a Russian duo. More controversy ensued as Russia claimed it was being slighted and joined South Korea in threatening to walk out of the Games. The Russian Duma, the lower house of parliament, unanimously passed a resolution Friday instructing Russian athletes to boycott the Closing Ceremonies if its concerns weren't addressed. Russian President Vladimir Putin also expressed his displeasure with the Games but backed away from the threat of a pullout.

days until the 2002 Winter Olympic Games The Salt Lake City 2002 Winter Olympics will take place from February 8th to February 24th 2002. The Paralympics will take place in Salt Lake City from March 7th to March 16th 2002. The International Olympic Committee awarded the 2002 Olympics to Salt Lake City on June 16th 1995 at Budapest, Hungary. With 15 sports being competed the 2002 Olympics will have more events than any previous winter games. Of special interest, an event from the annals of Winter Olympic History - the Skeleton will be reintroduced after several generations' absence. For the first time Women's Bobsleigh will be a medal event. The Salt Lake City Olympic Committee is planning for the participation of approximately 2,345 athletes and 1,800 officials from 80 countries - plus the opening and closing ceremonies. A world television audience of over two billion people is anticipated. Of particular impact will be the contribution of over 26,000 volunteers involved in pre-game organization and the games themselves. It would be hard to find a place more suited to hosting the Winter Olympics than Salt Lake City. The city's stunning setting - surrounded by the Rocky Mountain peaks of the Wasatch Front, that seem close enough to touch - would be reason enough to hold the Olympics here. But there is much more to Salt Lake than magnificent scenery. Obviously the proximity of mountains with outstanding conditions makes it perfect for a variety of winter sports

The 2002 Winter Games were marked by unprecedented controversies, a record medal haul for the host country and storylines with more Hollywood endings than a movie multiplex. Deseret News editors selected the following as the Games' Top 10 stories:
Medals: Made in Utah

As you probably know, the gold, silver and bronze Olympic medals were manufactured by the O.C.Tanner Company here in Salt Lake. We've seen how the finished products look, and these designs are perhaps the most unusual ever made for the Olympics. But we thought you'd like to see how they were actually made. (Al Hartmann/ The Salt Lake Tribune) Economist Sees Lasting Olympic Benefits
BY STEVEN OBERBECK
THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE
WEST VALLEY CITY Utah's hosting of the 2002 Winter Games should produce lasting benefits for the economy, but it is too early to speculate on just how far-reaching the Olympics' financial ripple will prove to be.
Kelly Matthews, executive vice president and chief economist for Wells Fargo Bank's Intermountain region, told members of ChamberWest on Thursday there was no question that Utah's Olympic organizers had proved the state knows how to put on a party.
