GREAT BRITISH OLYMPIANS STEVE REDGRAVE Sheer determination enabled Steve Redgrave to overcome illness and propel himself to an historic fifth gold. By Nick Pitt , Sunday Times THE ATHLETIC greatness and competitive record of Steve Redgrave, Britain’s ultimate Olympian, is at once obvious yet mysterious, a pyramid standing in the desert, its presence majestic but incomprehensible. First, the monument. He has won a gold medal at each of the five past Olympic Games: in the coxed four in 1984, the coxless pair with Andy Holmes in 1988 and the coxless pair with Matthew Pinsent in 1992 and 1996, and finally in the coxless four at Sydney, where his fifth gold fulfilled his ambition of being able to "make the Olympic rings in gold medals". He has also, almost as an afterthought, won nine gold medals in world championships and three in Commonwealth Games. Next, the context. Rowing is a particularly torturous sport. One might imagine that superfit athletes feel on top of the world, but here is Redgrave describing the effects of the training regime he has followed for 49 weeks a year over the past 19 years: "I go round feeling knackered all the time. I have no energy and I’m fighting the margins of being ill and not being ill. I go to dinners and fall asleep. I’m pushing back the boundaries all the time, and training so hard takes a toll on the body. If you feel fit and strong then there’s something wrong. You’re not training hard enough." And if training is pain upon pain, as dull and deadening as a long prison sentence, racing is a concentrated, exquisite form of self-punishment. Long before halfway on a 2,000m course, lungs and legs scream for mercy; but the brain must deny and ignore them, for each stroke, although wrenched with furious effort, has to be sweet and in harmony.

Before the home run...

before the slap shot... there was a ball and a stick. One of the oldest of competitive pastimes, the sport of field hockey dates back well before the Ancient Olympic Games. Although the exact origin of the game remains unknown, 4,000-year-old drawings found in the tomb at Beni-Hasen in the Nile Valley of Egypt depicted men playing the sport. Throughout the following centuries, variations of the game were played by a spectrum of cultures ranging from Greeks and Romans to Ethiopians and Aztecs. Hockey first appeared on the Olympic program at the 1908 London Games and again in 1920 at Antwerp. The sport was again featured on the program at Amsterdam in 1928 and has been an Olympic sport ever since. Women's hockey became a fixture on the Olympic program in Moscow in 1980.

Women and the Olympic Games
The ancient Olympic Games certainly marginalized the female sex. Pausanias relates the story of Callipateira , who dressed up as a trainer in order to see her son compete. He adds that when she inadvertently revealed her true identity in her excitement at seeing her son win, the Greeks were concerned enough by the breach of protocol to insitute a new rule requiring trainers as well as athletes to strip before entering the stadium . However, a female presence remained a strong undercurrent at Olympia . Although married women like Callipateira were forbidden to watch the Games , maidens could attend. And the Olympic rules did provide an exception for one married woman, the priestess of Demeter , who received honored seating by the altar in the stadium.
The Heraea Games
In fact, Olympia even offered an opportunity for female athletes to compete. The Heraea Games , administered by the Sixteen Women and other married women for maiden competitors, took place every four years. According to

The four team members will compete as independent athletes at the Games, although East Timor gained independence from Indonesia last year, their homeland does not yet have an elected government or a national Olympic committee. The athletes two marathon runners, a boxer and a weightlifter danced with joy around the athletics track in white track suits, waving to all sides of the stadium. Their appearance marks only the second time that a team of independent athletes has taken part in the Olympic Games. A squad of Yugoslavs was the first in 1992.

To back the prowess of a friend I came, when Lampromachos won his Isthmian crown, when on the same day both he and his brother overcame. And afterwards at the gates of Corinth two triumphs again befell Epharmostos and more in the valleys of Nemea. At Argos he triumphed over men, as over boys at Athens. And I might tell how at Marathon he stole from among the beardless and confronted the full-grown for the prize of silver vessels, how without a fall he threw his men with swift and coming shock, and how loud the shouting pealed when round the ring he ran, in the beauty of his youth and fair form and fresh from fairest deeds. Have we strayed from the ancient Olympic ideal? During this Olympic season, you may hear from announcers, critics, commentators and even athletes that the Olympic games are too commercial, too political, too "professional." Or that the judging is too nationalistic.
