History
The Olympics is like no other competition, offering some of the greatest moments of unscripted drama. We have documented here some of the outstanding achievements, with an emphasis on the progress of American gymnastics. Rather than provide a boring history lesson, we hope that you will see a great deal of FUN within these pages! For instance, did you know that...
  • gymnastics competitions used to be held outdoors?
  • the gymnasts would usually bring their own apparatus to compete on?
  • until 1960, anyone could try out for the U.S. Olympic team in gymnastics; you merely had to show up at the Trials competition to enter!
My, how things have changed! Sources

    The Olympic Games
In the ancient times, four great game festivals were held on Greek land: The Isthmians, The Nemeans, The Pythians and The Olympic Games. Part of a religious festival, the Olympic Games were held every four years at Olympia. The four year interval was called an Olympiad , and was the system upon which time in ancient Greek history was calculated. The games were so important that even wars were stopped at the time they were held. The first Olympic Games were held in 776 B.C. At first, only one race (the sprint) was run. Later, the discus and javelin throw, broad jumping and wrestling were added. The Olympic Games were held for more than 1,000 years. They were abolished by the Byzantine Emperor Theodosius in 394 A.D. The Games were revived in 1896 to promote understanding and friendship among nations. The first modern games were held in Athens, Greece. Young men and women come from all over the world to compete in various sports and represent their country. They live in an Olympic Village at the site of the games. The Olympic Games are organized and governed by the International Olympic Commitee (IOC). It sets the general program, chooses the city where the games are to be held, and determines the standards of amateurism. Each participating country has a National Olympic Commitee that is responsible for arranging the participation of the nation's athletes in the games.

    The Ancient Olympic Games
Although the ancient Olympic games were first recorded in 776 BC, they originated at least a century before that and possibly as early as the 13th century BC. One Greek legend said that the great Herakles (Hercules, in the Roman form) won a race at Olympia, a plain in the small state of Elis, and then decreed that the race should be re-enacted every four years. Another said that Zeus himself had originated the festival after defeating Cronus for the sovereignty of heaven. The more likely story is that the Olympic festival was a local religious event until 884 BC, when Iphitus, the king of Elis, decided to turn it into a broader, pan-Hellenic festival. To accomplish that, he entered into a temporary truce with other rulers, allowing athletes and others to travel peacefully to Olympia while the festival was going on. The Greeks based their chronology on four-year periods called Olympiads, and the Olympic festival marked the beginning of each Olympiad. Evidently, the festival was reorganized in 776 BC, which was considered the start of the first Olympiad. The festival was basically a religious gathering to celebrate the gods worshipped in common by all Hellenes, primarily Zeus. There were three other major pan-Hellenic festivals, the Pythian, the Nemean, and the Isthmian, all of which included fairs, but the festival at Olympia became pre-eminent by 572 BC, when Elis and Sparta entered into an alliance under which Elis was in charge of the event itself while Sparta enforced the sacred truce.

    A History of the Olympics
According to legend, the ancient Olympic Games were founded by Heracles (the Roman Hercules), a son of Zeus. Yet the first Olympic Games for which we still have written records were held in 776 BCE (though it is generally believed that the Games had been going on for many years already). At this Olympic Games, a naked runner, Coroebus (a cook from Elis), won the sole event at the Olympics, the stade - a run of approximately 192 meters (210 yards). This made Coroebus the very first Olympic champion in history. The ancient Olympic Games grew and continued to be played every four years for nearly 1200 years. In 393 CE, the Roman emperor Theodosius I , a Christian, abolished the Games because of their pagan influences.

Once every four years, men from all over Greece came to compete in a great athletic festival in Elis, in western Greece (Women were not allowed to compete). This was called the Olympic games because the place was called Olympia. It was a religious festival to honor the Greek gods Zeus and Hera . We don't know when men first began celebrating the Olympic Games, but they were certainly already doing it in the time of Homer , by 776 BC . And they were celebrated from then on, every four years without fail, until people converted to Christianity and the Roman Emperor Theodosius banned the games in 393 AD. That's more than a thousand years! The games were so regular that people used them to date by. They would say, I was born in the second year of the twenty-fourth Olympiad (starting from 776 BC). Can you figure out what year that would be in our reckoning?

The first recorded Ancient Olympic Games were in 776BC. They lasted for approximately 1000 years.
    Place
The Games were held in Olympia, a village in a sacred valley, approximately 500km south west of Mount Olympus.
    Purpose
The Ancient Olympic Games were held as a religious, sporting and cultural festival in honour of Zeus, the father of the gods.
    Philosophy
The Ancient Greeks believed that both the body and mind needed discipline and that those who practised this discipline could best honour Zeus.
    The Ancient Olympic Games
    • These Games were held every four years
Only Greek citizens were allowed to compete. Ancient Greece was divided into independent states, often at war with each other. During the Games there was an official truce, called Ekecheiria.. This meant athletes could travel safely to and from the Games. Violation of this truce was punishable by death.
The Marathon The modern marathon is one event which originated in these Ancient Games. Legend has it that Miltiades, a Greek General with an Athenian army, fought and won a battle against the Persians. He called for an Athenian runner and asked him to carry the victorious news back to Athens. The runner's journey was 24 miles but he entered the streets of Athens and shouted 'Rejoice! We conquer!' He then dropped dead. Although the accuracy of this tale is questionable, the first Modern Olympic Games in 1896, included the marathon to commemorate this legend.

Olympic Games: An Historic Proposal By: T. Campbell Introduction Task Process ... Ancient Olympic Games Event Brochure Introduction In 776 B.C. the ancient Greeks began a tradition that lasted for over 1100 years. They stopped all wars and each city-state sent their best athletes to the plain at Olympia to compete for the honor of Zeus at the Olympic Games. In 2004 A.D. the modern Olympic Games will be held in Athens, Greece. This return to the country of the Games' ancient origins has the potential to be an historic event. However, the success depends on a careful plan. Introduction Task Process Evaluation ... Resources Task Your group will be creating a proposal for the events of the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. The Greek government has ordered that the proposals must focus on the historical roots of the Olympic Games in ancient Greece. A successful proposal will design an Olympic Games that allows the spectators and athletes to experience the ancient tradition like no other modern Olympics has ever done.
    • Your proposal must identify the most important ancient events and include an explanation of how the historical roots of each of those events will be preserved in the modern competition.
