LEXICON Greece is located at the southernmost tip of Europe and has one of the most unique geographic formations of any country in Europe. Including the islands, it has an area of 50,959 square miles and a population of 10.2 million (1991 census). An estimated five million Greeks live abroad. Greece is washed on three sides by seas: by the Ionian Sea to the west, the Aegean Sea to the east and the Mediterranean Sea to the south. To the north lie Albania, former Yugoslavia and Bulgaria. To the northeast is Turkey.
At the crossroads of three continents, Greece is a stepping-stone to Asia and Africa. Some four-fifths of Greece's land territory is mountainous. Its coastline, with its many gulfs and inlets, is one of the longest of any country in Europe. The main geographic divisions of Greece are (1) the northern region which includes Epirus, Macedonia and Thrace; (2) Central Greece and Thessaly; (3) the Peloponnese which is separated from the mainland by the Corinth Canal; and (4) the islands of the Aegean Sea to the east of the mainland, the Ionian islands to the west, and Crete, the largest Greek island, to the south.

Originally held in ancient Greece, they were revived by French Baron Pierre de Coubertin in the late 19th century. The Games of the Olympiad, better known as the Summer Olympics, have been held every fourth year since 1896, with the exception of the years during the World Wars. A special edition for winter sports, the Winter Olympic Games, started in 1924; since 1994 these are no longer held in the same year as the Games of the Olympiad.

Micronesian history was made with Pohnpei hosting the 5th venues, and hosting thebest Micronesian games to date few years up to the Athens 2004 olympic games.
http://www.oceania-olympic.org/members/fsm.html
Brief History
The Federated States of Micronesia National Olympic Committee (FSMNOC) was formed in 1996 and achieved International Olympic Committee (IOC) recognition on 6 September 1997. The Federated States of Micronesia NOC remains the newest member of the IOC. At the upcoming Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, history will be made with the flag of the Federated States of Micronesia being carried at the opening ceremony for the first time.
In support of its application for IOC membership, the Federated States of Micronesia held the first and second FSM Games and became affiliated to numerous international sport federations. In June 1995, the first FSM Games were held on the island of Pohnpei. Over 900 athletes and coaches from the four FSM island states of Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei and Kosrae competed in twelve sport championships. From 1995 to 1997, seven national sport federations became affiliated with their respective international sport federations. In July 1997, the second FSM Games were held on the island of Kosrae. Over 1,000 athletes and coaches participated in thirteen sport championships over a two-week period. In June 1997, the FSMNOC formally submitted an application for membership in the IOC.
The FSMNOC is the national organization responsible for the coordination and management of FSM athletes and teams participating in the Olympic Games and the South Pacific Games. With funding assistance for Olympic Solidarity and International Federations, it also directs technical assistance to members in sport administration, coaching, training elite athletes and sports medicine. The short-term goal of the NOC is to develop a strong junior sport program throughout the islands. Within ten years, this program will help develop and detect future elite athletes who will represent the FSM in the Olympic Games.

The term became current around the turn of the 20th century, originally referring to illegal drugging of racehorses. The practice of enhancing performance through foreign substances or other artificial means, however, is as old as competitive sport itself. Ancient Greek athletes are known to have used special diets and stimulating potions to fortify themselves. Strychnine, caffeine, cocaine and alcohol were often used by cyclists and other endurance athletes in the 19th century. Thomas Hicks ran to victory in the Olympic marathon of 1904 in Saint Louis by help of raw egg, injections of strychnine and doses of brandy administered to him during the race! By the 1920's it had become evident that restrictions regarding drug use in sports were necessary.

Abstracts of Most Recent Issue of Journal of Olympic History Vol. 8, No. 2 From the Trenches to the Track, and Back (by Harry Gordon). pp. 7-10. Australian Olympic historian Harry Gordon discusses the many Olympic athletes who have fought for their nation during wartime. He begins with the story of Claude Smeal, an Australian soldier who ran the 1952 marathon. Further discussion centered on several British soldiers who honored themselves both on the battlefield and the Olympic arena. Gordon ends the article by discussing the relationship of Jesse Owens and Lutz Long, which began at the 1936 Olympics, and ended with the death of Long while fighting in North Africa during World War II. The Olympic Bribery Scandal (by Bill Mallon). pp. 11-27. This long article attempts to be the most complete, and accurate, summary of the events surrounding the Olympic Scandal of 1999. The article is based on primary documentary sources, including all the reports issued in 1999 that evaluated the status of the scandal. These included the Pound Report (IOC), the Mitchell Report (USOC), the Sheridan Report (Sydney), and the Salt Lake City Board of Ethics Report (Salt Lake City 2002). After discussion of the findings of the reports, the article focuses on the attempts at reform by the IOC, including the institution of the IOC 2000 Commission, the IOC Ethics Commission, and the numerous reforms enacted by the IOC at their 1999 Session held on 11-12 December in Lausanne.

Paralympic Games 1988, Seoul
The 1988 Paralympics was the largest and most well-facilitated in Games history then. The Seoul Games gave a new generation of Paralympic athletes the opportunity to compete in many of the well-designed and well-constructed facilities used previously for the Olympic Games. The results showed the importance of assistance from host countries. The Seoul Paralympic Organizing Committee (SPOC) had only a tangential relationship with the Seoul Olympic Organizing Committee (SLOOC). But this relationship was substantial enough to recruit and train many of the sports and technical officials for the Paralympic Games as well. The Paralympic village was just 4km from the Olympic stadium. Athletes, coaches, trainers and team supporters were housed in a purpose-built village, which consisted of 10 apartment buildings with a total of 1,316 units. Some 156 events, mostly involving athletes with serious disabilities, could not be held because fewer than three athletes had been fielded. There was much disappointment among the competing nations and international federations, but it was a sign that the Paralympic Games would gain credibility as elite athletic standards were implemented. The opening ceremony on 15 October was held at the Olympic stadium before a crowd of 75,000. A record number of 3,053 competitors from 61 countries took part in the parade. The new Paralympic flag was presented to the International Coordinating Committee (ICC) President, Dr. Jens Bromann, and the Games were declared open by Mr. Roh Tae-Woo, President of the Republic of Korea.

The VIII Winter Olympic Games
Excerpted from Squaw Valley USA: The First Fifty Years Word spread quickly and on January 7th, 1955 Cushing addressed the U.S. Olympic Committee in New York. Though prepared with a speech and film, he didn't get an opportunity to use either. The committee was so engaged with the "idea of a California valley with an annual snowfall of 450 inches, and a downhill event with areas that had never even been schussed successfully," recalls Cushing, that he found himself buried under an avalanche of questions and controversy. In the end, Squaw Valley emerged as the USOC's choice for the 1960 Winter Games. Committee members continued to assure Cushing that his case was hopeless. Innsbruck even began assigning living quarters to various delegations. Marillac however, proceeded to convince the European-dominated Federacion Internacionale du Ski (FIS), who were committed to the Alps' glory, that Squaw Valley was technically sufficient. Cushing's campaign succeeded through the power of an idea - a return to the Olympic ideals of simplicity with a focus on athleticism and diversity. His bid, written in French, English, and Spanish, declared that "the Olympics belong to the world. Not just one continent." On June 17, 1955, Cushing and his team had visited forty-two IOC delegates, yet remained uncertain of victory. Then, with a final vote of 32 to 30, the IOC chose Squaw Valley to host the Games. Word spread quickly across the globe, followed by shock and disbelief. While Cushing's team celebrated, athletes wondered about winter in California. Cushing immediately began work to attract top people to the Organizing Committee and California started planning the necessary infrastructure.

WCF History
A short history of the World Curling Federation
It is recorded that international curling events were staged in the 19th century in Europe and North America, but it was not until the first Winter Olympic Games at Chamonix in 1924 that any form of competition was identified. Great Britain defeated Sweden and France in a three-country demonstration of the sport. In 1932 at Lake Placid, curling again was listed as a demonstration sport at the Winter Olympics, and Canada was a winner over the United States in a two-country competition in which each country entered four teams. Another 25 years passed before a meeting was held in Edinburgh in 1957 to consider the formation of an international organisation which would be required in order to apply for Olympic medal status. No progress was documented, but two years later, in 1959, Scotland and Canada reached a major milestone by launching the Scotch Cup series between their national men's curling champions. Interest in other countries was generated, and the USA (1961), Sweden (1962), Norway and Switzerland (1964), France (1966) and Germany (1967) expanded the Scotch Cup entry. The 1959-67 results now are recognised in the curling history of the men's world championship.
