The ancient Olympic Games are so old that even the ancient Greeks didn't know how they started. The origins of the ancient Games are steeped in legend and myth. Different versions of the origins of the Games were described by ancient writers such as Pindar, Strabo, Phlegon, Pausanius and Eusebius.
Of course all of these writers came many years after the ILIAD and the ODYSSEY were written by an ancient Greek writer named Homer . There is no evidence to date Homer's works, but they appear to be from the period of the 10th to the 6th centuries BCE. In fact, there is no evidence that shows Homer was the writer and it is possible that these works were written by more than one person.
Remember what we know today is only a mere fraction of what happened 3,000 years ago. Think about your own history what happened on the day you were born? What evidence exists to prove it? Your birth certificate? Your parents told you about it? Was there a newspaper article written about your birth? Did you talk to any doctors or nurses who were there?
So in studying the past even your own past how can you find out what happened? There has to be something to look at, or someone to talk to (witnesses). So how could we possibly know anything about the Greeks who lived 3000 years ago?

History of Road Cycling: Cycling has enjoyed resurgence in Australia due largely to the success of Australian cyclists overseas. In recent years Australian Professionals’ such as Phil Anderson, Neil Stephens, Robbie McEwen and Stuart O’Grady have enjoyed stage wins in the Worlds biggest cycle race, "Le Tour de France". Phil Anderson and Stuart O’Grady remain the only two Australians’ to ever wear the leaders yellow jersey. Technology advances are making considerable differences to the average speeds of cyclists. At the 1992 Olympic Games, Britain’s Chris Boardman won the 4000m Individual Pursuit on his new "high-tech" bike, using lightweight and aerodynamic materials produced by Formula One racing car manufacturer, Lotus. Commonly used materials in a bicycles structure are carbon-fibre, titanium and aluminium. There are many Cycling events but the 3 primary disciplines conducted at the Olympic Games are Track, Road and Mountain Bike. Both Track and Road Cycling are Commonwealth Games disciplines, however Mountain Bike is still yet to be introduced. Did you know?

The Olympic Movement Modern History Olympic Issues Date
The first recorded Ancient Olympic Games were in 776BC. They lasted for approximately 1000 years.
Place
The Games were held in Olympia, a village in a sacred valley, approximately 500km south west of Mount Olympus.
Purpose
The Ancient Olympic Games were held as a religious, sporting and cultural festival in honour of Zeus, the father of the gods.
Philosophy
The Ancient Greeks believed that both the body and mind needed discipline and that those who practised this discipline could best honour Zeus.
The Ancient Olympic Games
  • These Games were held every four years
Only Greek citizens were allowed to compete. Ancient Greece was divided into independent states, often at war with each other. During the Games there was an official truce, called Ekecheiria.. This meant athletes could travel safely to and from the Games. Violation of this truce was punishable by death.
The Marathon The modern marathon is one event which originated in these Ancient Games. Legend has it that Miltiades, a Greek General with an Athenian army, fought and won a battle against the Persians. He called for an Athenian runner and asked him to carry the victorious news back to Athens. The runner's journey was 24 miles but he entered the streets of Athens and shouted 'Rejoice! We conquer!' He then dropped dead. Although the accuracy of this tale is questionable, the first Modern Olympic Games in 1896, included the marathon to commemorate this legend.
