B.C. Military Usage
From prehistoric times, the bow was a principal weapon of war and of the hunt throughout the world, except in Australia. Some authorities date the origin of archery as early as the Aurignacian period, about 25,000 years before the modern era. The earliest people known to have used the bow and arrow were the ancient Egyptians, who adopted the weapon at least 5000 years ago. In the time of the earliest pharaohs, the Egyptians practiced archery in hunting, as well as in warfare against the ancient Persians, who were then equipped only with spears and slingshots. Recreational archery was also practiced, among the ancient Egyptians and Greeks, one instance of the latter being the competition in which Odysseus won the hand of Penelope. Soon after, however, the bow and arrow was used extensively in the ancient world. The Assyrians and Babylonians depended on the weapon, and the Old Testament refers several times to archery as a characteristic skill of the ancient Hebrews.

History
The Olympics is like no other competition, offering some of the greatest moments of unscripted drama. We have documented here some of the outstanding achievements, with an emphasis on the progress of American gymnastics. Rather than provide a boring history lesson, we hope that you will see a great deal of FUN within these pages! For instance, did you know that...
  • gymnastics competitions used to be held outdoors?
  • the gymnasts would usually bring their own apparatus to compete on?
  • until 1960, anyone could try out for the U.S. Olympic team in gymnastics; you merely had to show up at the Trials competition to enter!

    History of Nagano Olympics
The original ones were selected from the articles related to Olympics, appeared in our newspapers, which are all written in Japanese. A new software system called Internet New Esperanto (INE) was used to translate them into English and Chinese. This system is not perfect yet, so that we must excuse for incompleteness of the translation. The INE project, which aims to propose a new standard language for Internet, is developed by Shinshu University, Co.Ltd. Densan and the Shinano Mainichi Newspaper. From this language, the translations to many languages are easy, and the converse is also true. People will understand other languages more deeply and will have an occasion to be interested in them, by our INE system.

"NATO can assist. NATO will assist. NATO is in a position to assist."
    NATO Secretary General
    Jaap de Hoop Scheffer
(CBS/AP) Greece asked NATO on Friday for help with Olympic security as authorities deployed bomb squads and dogs at railroad stations after the deadly bombings in Spain.
Greek officials previously had said that NATO allies would be on standby in case of a terrorist attack or other crises during the Aug. 13-29 Olympics. But the formal written appeal for help apparently reflected heightened concerns and still further efforts to bolster an already unprecedented Olympic security network. Foreign Ministry spokesman Giorgos Koumoutsakos said Greece asked the alliance for help "mainly in areas of aerial surveillance, joint monitoring of seas and protection against a chemical, biological and nuclear incident." It was not clear when NATO would reply, but top alliance officials have not hesitated to pledge assistance in the past.

"Figure skating was included in the 1908 Olympics and ice hockey was added in 1920. The First Olympic Winter Games were staged in Chamonix, France, in 1924. 294 athletes from 16 nations took part in 14 events. Over the next 68 years, the Winter Games were held in the same year as the Summer Games. A new cycle began in 1994. Now the Winter Olympics, while still held every four years, are staged in a different year than the Summer Games. At the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City, more than 2000 athletes representing more than 70 nations with compete in 78 different events. Half of these events have been added to the Olympic program since 1984." ~The Olympic Museum, Olympic Winter Games http://www.museum.olympic.org/scripts/the_winter_games/the_games_e.asp , accessed 1/22/02. General History of Women's Ice Hockey According to official encyclopaedia of the NHL the first game was played in Ottawa, where the Government House team defeated the Rideau ladies team. According to the Canadian Hockey Association the first documented game was held in Barrie, Ontario, two years before the first Stanley Cup championship. At Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, a female club team - the Love-Me-Littles - is formed in defiance of the school Archbishop. Women's teams are formed at McGill University and in the Ottawa Valley. Competitions are held in the Maritimes involving the Red and Blues from Halifax and the Kananites, another Nova Scotia team. An international women's tournament is held in Cleveland, Ohio, featuring Canadian and American teams. The Preston Rivulettes, one of the greatest dynasties in Canadian sport, reign over female hockey. Between 1930 and 1939, the Rivulettes claim Ontario, Eastern Canadian and Dominion titles. Teams blossom across Canada. In Montreal, the Couguars and the Titans are formed and in Edmonton, the Chimos are established. Teams are also forming in Sweden, Finland, Japan, China, Korea, Norway, Germany and Switzerland. U.S. colleges varsity and club teams sprout in the Midwest and the Northeast. A Finnish national Women´s league is started.
