Olympic Games: An Historic Proposal By: T. Campbell Introduction Task Process ... Ancient Olympic Games Event Brochure Introduction In 776 B.C. the ancient Greeks began a tradition that lasted for over 1100 years. They stopped all wars and each city-state sent their best athletes to the plain at Olympia to compete for the honor of Zeus at the Olympic Games. In 2004 A.D. the modern Olympic Games will be held in Athens, Greece. This return to the country of the Games' ancient origins has the potential to be an historic event. However, the success depends on a careful plan. Introduction Task Process Evaluation ... Resources Task Your group will be creating a proposal for the events of the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. The Greek government has ordered that the proposals must focus on the historical roots of the Olympic Games in ancient Greece. A successful proposal will design an Olympic Games that allows the spectators and athletes to experience the ancient tradition like no other modern Olympics has ever done.
  • Your proposal must identify the most important ancient events and include an explanation of how the historical roots of each of those events will be preserved in the modern competition.

    The Olympic Games
In the ancient times, four great game festivals were held on Greek land: The Isthmians, The Nemeans, The Pythians and The Olympic Games. Part of a religious festival, the Olympic Games were held every four years at Olympia. The four year interval was called an Olympiad , and was the system upon which time in ancient Greek history was calculated. The games were so important that even wars were stopped at the time they were held. The first Olympic Games were held in 776 B.C. At first, only one race (the sprint) was run. Later, the discus and javelin throw, broad jumping and wrestling were added. The Olympic Games were held for more than 1,000 years. They were abolished by the Byzantine Emperor Theodosius in 394 A.D. The Games were revived in 1896 to promote understanding and friendship among nations. The first modern games were held in Athens, Greece. Young men and women come from all over the world to compete in various sports and represent their country. They live in an Olympic Village at the site of the games. The Olympic Games are organized and governed by the International Olympic Commitee (IOC). It sets the general program, chooses the city where the games are to be held, and determines the standards of amateurism. Each participating country has a National Olympic Commitee that is responsible for arranging the participation of the nation's athletes in the games.

They stopped all wars and each city-state sent their best athletes to the plain at Olympia to compete for the honor of Zeus at the Olympic Games. Although the Olympics were one of the most important events in Greek life, they did not promote them the way we do today. This brochure will describe three events that were part of the competitions and will help the visitors who use them to understand the rules of the event and some of its history. The Winter Olympics
The move toward a winter version of the Olympics began in 1908 when figure skating made an appearance at the Summer Games in London. Ten-time world champion Ulrich Salchow of Sweden, who originated the backwards, one revolution jump that bears his name, and Madge Syers of Britain were the first singles champions. Germans Anna Hubler and Heinrich Berger won the pairs competition. The Games resumed in 1920 at Antwerp, Belgium, where figure skating returned and ice hockey was added as a medal event. Sweden's Gillis Grafstrom and Magda Julin took individual honors, while Ludovika and Walter Jakobsson were the top pair. In hockey, Canada won the gold medal with the United States second and Czechoslovakia third. Seventy years after those first cold weather Games, the 17th edition of the Winter Olympics took place in Lillehammer, Norway, in 1994. The event ended the four-year Olympic cycle of staging both Winter and Summer Games in the same year and began a new schedule that calls for the two Games to alternate every two years.

Federations Home Introduction in Weightlifting Weightlifting - Powerlifting - Bodybuilding It is important to make a clear distinction between the three related sports branches that often get mixed up: weightlifting, bodybuilding and powerlifting. All three competition sports are based on weight training but there are also fundamental differences. What counts in " body-building " is the athlete's appearance, or as de term explains itself: how well is the body builded. So there is only real use from weights in the training sessions, while on the competition itself only the result of this weight-training on the body is displayed. Weightlifting and powerlifting are much closer to each other; in both strength sports the aim is to lift as much as possible while the looks of the athlete's body are of no importance. In power-lifting there are three movements at which the "pure" strength from the participants is tested. With the first movement- the

Birthplace of the Olympic Games and Zeus' sacred place, Olympia has cultivated ideals since ancient times. It was never just the games, but also the honour, the peace, the struggle and the body - all in one.Visiting the archaeological site and museum, you will walk in one of the most important sanctuaries of ancient Greece. Situated in the landscape of Elis, by the foot of Mt. Kronion, Olympia invites you to take part of the history of Greece. Olympia Overview History The Museum Mythology ... Getting there Overview Olympia is connected to many gods and myths, and there are different versions on how the Olympic Games got started. According to one version, this was where Zeus struggled with his father Cronus , finally beating him and seizing the throne. As a memory of his victory, Zeus made the games.
Another myth tells us that it was the five brothers that brought up Zeus on Crete that started them. They raced in Olympia, and the oldest brother Heracles (not the hero) crowned the winner with an olive wreath.
