In April 2000, IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch publicly blistered Athens' performance as the worst he had seen in 20 years at the helm of the Olympic movement. In response, the Greek government brought back Gianna Angelopoulos-Daskalaki, the conservative politician who had masterminded Athens' winning Games bid, to oversee the organizing committee. The IOC's tone gradually improved with subsequent inspections. Still, venue construction appears set to continue until the last minute, and organizers have abandoned plans to build a roof over the swimming venue, much to the displeasure of the international swimming federation FINA. Fears of terrorism, especially in the wake of a train bombing in Madrid, have brought increased scrutiny over security plans in a country that has dealt with domestic terrorists for decades.

Beijing Games win divides world opinion
Many of Beijing's 13 million residents poured into the city center to join the celebrations By staff and wire reports BEIJING, China Beijing has won the right to stage the 2008 Olympic Games, recording a landslide victory in the face of worldwide concern on China's human rights record. The Chinese capital prevailed on the second round of a secret International Olympic Committee ballot by receiving 56 votes, three more than the required majority and 34 votes ahead of second-placed Toronto. As the estimated 200,000 revellers who had converged on Tiananmen Square awoke to face day one in the lead-up to the Games, reaction to the decision filtering in from around the world was mixed. In the winning city, newspaper headlines matched the delirious mood of the population. "Smiles Everywhere, Joy Ignites," blazed a headline in the Beijing Morning Post beneath a picture of a man spraying beer from a shaken bottle of beer.

Attended by representatives from 23 countries, comprising 2035 competitors, of which 36 were women Rome had originally been selected to host the 1908 Olympics, but the Italian organizers withdrew after a 1906 eruption of Mount Vesuvius created havoc in the country. The IOC asked the British Olympic Association to take over. In many respects, it was the ideal solution. England had much more collective experience in organizing large sports events than any other country, with the Henley Royal Regatta, the All-England (Wimbledon) tennis tournament, and the 30-year-old Amateur Athletic Association's national track and field championships.
The English organizers did bring considerably more order to the Olympics, primarily by limiting the number of athletes that could represent any one country in a given event. But the 1908 Games were the first to be marred by international politics and controversy over judging

Olympic Truce The Olympic Truce The idea of the Olympic Truce is based upon the deep belief that athletics and Olympic ideals can contribute to the creation of a peaceful and better world. The basic aim of this endeavor is to facilitate initiatives that promote dialog, reconciliation, mutual understanding, solidarity and peace. The Olympic Truce is a performance of all people and as such it aims at emphasizing the significance of respecting peaceful co-existence. Greece decided that it should offer something unique, something above and beyond for the implementation of peace, aside the principles of the Olympic Games and the Cultural Olympics; that is the reason for the country's pursuance and achievement in reviving the Olympic Truce. The significance of the effort concealed behind the Olympic Truce is the fact that it combines the strength of an Olympic Movement, the credibility of the athletic movement and the enthusiasm of the younger generation. It should be clarified that it is not for the younger generation alone, but for anyone and everyone who supports and is willing to work for peace under the auspice of the Olympic Ideal. The objective is to combine the spirit and the dynamics of these movements and to seek contributions to resolve existing worldwide conflicts.

Squash Bids for the
2012 Olympic Games

The (IOC) made an extremely important announcement on 8th April 2004 concerning the forward plans for deciding which sports will be on the programme of the Olympic Games in 2012. After the Athens Olympics of 2004, the IOC Olympic Programme Commission will start a process of evaluation of all the sports currently on the programme and, most importantly for Squash, a “certain number of recognised International Federations”. We hope and believe that Squash will be one of a small number of Recognised Sports selected for this review.
After Athens, the selected sports will be asked by the IOC to complete a questionnaire that covers a sport’s history and tradition, popularity, universality, image, athlete’s health, presentation, development and cost, which must be submitted by 10 November 2004. The Commission will evaluate the responses to these questionnaires and present the findings to the IOC Executive Board in April 2005. The decisions they make will form the basis of a recommendation on the programme for 2012, to be approved by the IOC Session in Singapore in June 2005.

LONDON – For the first time, the IOC has taken out cancellation insurance on the Olympics: a $170 million policy to cover the risk of the Athens Games being called off because of war, terrorism, earthquakes or flooding. The Athens Olympics will be the most heavily guarded in history, with a security budget nearing $1 billion, more than three times the amount spent on protecting the 2000 Sydney Games. NATO has agreed to help provide security in Athens. The Athens Games are the first summer Olympics since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. IOC president Jacques Rogge told The Associated Press on Tuesday that coverage for full and partial cancellation of the Aug. 13-29 games had been signed with a syndicate of London-based insurance companies. It's the first time the International Olympic Committee has insured any Olympics against cancellation.
