Athens 2004
April 19, 2004
Like watching paint dry: a bystander waits patiently for heavy lifting equipment to roll a section of roofing into place over the main Olympic stadium yesterday. It is the painfully slow process of construction work in Athens that has in part caused the IOC to seek an insurance policy against cancellation of the Games
By Laura Peek
THE International Olympic Committee (IOC) is seeking insurance to cover the Olympic Games in Athens in case they are called off, The Times has learnt. Athens 2004 would be the first modern Olympiad to be insured against cancellation. The decision comes amid growing fears about increasing construction delays and concerns that Greek security may not be up to scratch. NI_MPU('middle');

71.123-141 The Ancient Olympic Games and the 1896 Games: Differences and Future Prospects
by Dr Maxwell L. Howell (Canada), Professor, Chairman of the Physical Education Department of the University of Alberta It is widely held that the Ancient Olympic Games began at Olympia in 776 B.C. and were held every four years until banned by the Emperor Theodosius I in A.D. 394. The last Games were, according to this opinion, in A.D. 393. The Games were, supposedly, the 293rd, and had continued for 1168 years. Next year, in Munich, we will be celebrating only the 20th modern Olympic Games, which have existed for some 75 years. Many historians believe that the Ancient Games started earlier and finished later, but for the purposes of this paper this will not be debated. The events of the Ancient Games over the time period cited varied. In 776 B.C., for example, only the stade race was run, and events were added as the years went on. However a certain pattern emerged, and this one will be developed. Again, there are differences of opinion on this subject. The opinion of Drees has been relied on, in the main, though even he admits that the reconstruction can only be considered, a "more or less satisfactory sequence"

In 1995 the IOC embarked on an extensive acquisitions programme, with the aim of recovering all relevant audio-visual records of the Olympic Games, in order to preserve the heritage of the Olympic Movement long-term.
    Restoration and Film Treatment
The IOC is committed to repairing and restoring the Olympic images acquired through the programme. The material, in many cases the original negative, undergoes ultrasonic cleaning, repair, scratch treatment and preparation for telecine at one of the top film treatment centres in London. It is then fully graded and wet-gate telecined to make highest quality digital tape masters (Digi Beta PAL and D3 PAL). The original material is placed in the Olympic Museum's deep storage facility which conforms with FIAF/FIAT recommended temperature and humidity conditions.
The IOC has adopted a long term approach to the global problem of film stock deterioration and is undertaking to transfer all film and television material of the Olympic Games onto digital tape format ensuring the safe preservation of the Olympic Movement's heritage for generations to come.
    The Library
Once restored, all acquired material is meticulously logged by specialist research staff onto a state-of-the-art library system. Each individual master cassette is bar- coded to ensure rapid retrieval and our research team's intimate knowledge of the archive ensures the selection of the most appropriate footage clips for the client's own needs.

    DESCRIPTION
In Future of the Olympic Games, Olympic scholar John Lucas examines the issues and challenges that the Olympic Games will face through the year 2000. He provides the in-depth historical perspective necessary to understand what the future is likely to hold for the Games. He also identifies the current problems that plague the Games, and suggests changes that will keep them alive and vital into the 21st century. One of the world's foremost Olympic historians, Lucas provides the first serious, comprehensive discussion of the future of the Olympic Games. We are here to discuss the relations between the Olympic Games and culture. Since we share a common view that People¡¯s Olympics is by no means a hollow talk. The evolution of the modern Olympic Movement proves that sports can only demonstrate spirit through physical competition, and that sports can only express emotions through physical exercises. Only through such means, can sports make people develop common ideals and believes in daily life equality, justice, peace and friendship.
Therefore, I am pleased to have this opportunity to share with you my experiences in bringing the emblem of the 2008 Olympic Games into being and discuss the unique Chinese cultural content of the emblem.
(First, please allow me to show you a short video film about the Beijing 2008 Olympic emblem.)

The export impact of the Olympic Games
"AND THE WINNER IS - SYDNEY" were the words spoken by International Olympic Committee President Juan Antonio Samaranch when Sydney successfully won its bid to host the Olympic Games in the year 2000. It is now just over a year before we let the games begin on 15 September, 2000. There is great anticipation (as well as much construction activity) in Sydney as we close in on the first significant world event of the new millennium. The economic benefits of the 2000 Olympics can be classified as direct and indirect. Direct benefits include the impact of the Olympics on exports, investment and employment. In terms of exports, the main impact will be inbound tourism, sponsorship fees, media broadcast rights, and ticket sales. The staging of the Olympics will encourage more international tourists to visit Australia. According to the Tourism Forecasting Council 1.5 million additional international tourists are expected to visit Australia over 1994-95 to 2005-06 because of the staging of the Olympics. This is estimated to generate an additional $2.7 billion in tourism exports (see Arthur Anderson/CREA,1999, p 2).

The IOC Launches Extensive Consultation on the Future of the Games ¡¡¡¡Following the establishment earlier this year of the Olympic Games Study Commission by Dr Jacques Rogge, President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), a section of the Olympic Movement¡¯s website has been dedicated to gathering ideas aimed at reducing the cost, size and complexity of the Games, while preserving their success.
¡¡¡¡All constituencies of the Olympic Movement, private and public sports bodies, scholars plus the public at large, are invited to submit their ideas relating to the organization of the Games by visiting the home page of the Olympic Movement¡¯s website www.olympic.org and completing a questionnaire found by clicking on the icon "Public Suggestions". Recognizing that the Olympic Games is a passion for all, the IOC has, for the first time, opened up its research to include the views of the general public.
¡¡¡¡"Evidence suggests that the costs of staging the Olympic Games have continued to rise and the Games have become increasingly complex to organize. If such costs are not brought under control, there is some risk that the Games may become too big and too complex for all but a few cities or countries to handle", stated Richard W. Pound, Chairman of the Games Study Commission. "We believe that working with Olympic Games experts and consulting with all Olympic constituencies should be complemented by a wide public consultation process. It is with this in mind that we decided to launch "Public Suggestions". Everyone is inspired by the Olympic Games and therefore, they should have an opportunity to make suggestions on the future of the Games. We thank everyone for their participation in this effort."

Welcome to the home page of the inaugural European Scholar-Athlete Games (ESAG), a concept that is unique, yet dates back to the first modern Olympic Games of 1896! Administered by the Institute for International Sport, the 2002 European Scholar-Athlete Games were held at one of the most modern and beautiful campuses in the Republic of Ireland, the University of Limerick, from August 11-16. The Games brought together 400 young scholar-athletes and scholar-artists, aged 15-19, from the United States and Europe.
The primary goal of the Games was to provide the participants with an exciting program that inspired them to pursue excellence in both academic and extracurricular arenas. In addition, the Games allowed individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures, who might otherwise never interact, to develop long-lasting friendships and experience significant cultural exchange through sport and cultural arts activities. The format of the European Scholar-Athlete Games was based on the effective framework of past Scholar-Athlete Games events run by the Institute in both the United States and abroad.
The concept of the Scholar-Athlete Games is derived from the century-old historical tradition of the modern Olympic Games, but it seeks to add a new dimension. Those Games grew out of the belief that international sport could be a force for understanding and friendship among world athletes and, indirectly, among nations. The European Scholar-Athlete Games upholds that tradition while simultaneously celebrating scholarship, athletics and cultural growth.
