Geography of the Olympic Games
Dateline: 09/21/00 Although "over 200" countries are attending and participating in the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, there are only 192 true countries on earth. So how are there 200 or more Olympic participants? The International Olympic Committee (IOC) says it best Although most National Olympic Committees (NOCs) are from nations, the IOC also recognises independent territories, commonwealths, protectorates and geographical areas. Of the 192 countries on earth , three ( Kiribati Marshall Islands , and the Vatican City ) have no NOCs, which ensure that athletes from their respective nations attend the Olympic Games, so they won't be participating in Sydney. That results in 189 true countries with NOCs. Add to that the twelve territories, commonwealths, and protectorates that have NOCs and can thus participate in the Olympics: American Samoa (U.S.), Aruba (Netherlands), Bermuda (U.K.), British Virgin Islands (U.K.), Cayman Islands (U.K.), Cook Islands (New Zealand), Guam (U.S.), Hong Kong (China), Netherlands Antilles (Netherlands), Palestine, Puerto Rico (U.S.), and the Virgin Islands (U.S.).

48. Olympic Campaign
Looking ahead, Greenpeace raised the bar on the IOC, by presenting a tough newset of Environmental Guidelines for future olympic games. Quick links
http://www.greenpeace.org.au/archives/olympics/
The Green Games
Greenpeace conceived the idea of a Green Olympics . Our aim was to ensure the 'Green Games' were a global showcase for environmental solutions The Olympics campaign began back in 1992 when Greenpeace won a design competition for the Athletes' Village. In 1993, a specific set of Environmental Guidelines for the Games, developed by Greenpeace, were passed into law by the NSW Government. We continued to play a vital watchdog role for the next seven years. Many top athletes supported our vision for a Green Games, and even members of the Olympic movement resolved to 'Let the Games be Green' Greenpeace was there to make sure the plans for the first truly 'Green Games' became a reality. By releasing an Olympic Report every 100 days from 1995 to 2000, we kept environmental issues firmly on the agenda. Our non-violent direct actions increased public awareness and pressured decision makers and stakeholders to reduce the Games' environmental impact.

LANGFORD THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Down in Australia, where they're all atwitter getting ready for the 2000 Olympic Summer Games, they're trying to get the word out that sybaritic Sydney is a party town, not just a place of beaches and boats. That's scant news to the world's gays and lesbians. In this city founded as a British penal colony, the annual Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade attracts more than half a million revelers, the biggest annual tourist event in Australia. The Lonely Planet travel guide says the "gay and lesbian culture is so strong in Sydney that it's almost mainstream . . . probably the second-largest gay community in the world." On the horizon are the Summer Olympic Games, Sept. 15-30, 2000. They are expected to draw 1.5 million visitors to this city of about 3.7 million (out of Australia's total of 18 million). An expected shortage of hotel rooms has even brought suggestions of anchoring a dozen or so cruise ships in Sydney Harbor and Botany Bay for sleeping quarters.

Official coverage of the Olympics on the Web is increasing, but live coverage of events is still some way off because of TV deals With the Winter Games kicking off on Friday in Salt Lake City, Internet programming has taken one step forward and one step back since the last contest. A friendlier time schedule for US viewers and the presence of the first credentialled Internet Olympics press corps promise to bring some useful information to Web surfers who can't make it to the TV set. In addition, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has again approved tests for online video broadcasting of the games, which may open the door to a richer Web experience in future contests. Still, consumers shouldn't expect a front-row cyberseat at the Games anytime soon, analysts said. "Coverage is going to be stripped down, and you're going to see that the Internet site is more a driver to TV than the other way around," said Patrick Keane, an analyst at Net researcher Jupiter Media Metrix.
