    The beginnings
There is evidence of human existence in México since 20,000 years BC. In Tepéxpan to the North of the Valley of México, the remains of a human corpse were found beside those of a mammoth. Using the Carbon 14 test, these remains were dated at approximately 10,000 years BC. Agriculture began to manifest itself from the year 3,000 BC.
The American continent was isolated during many centuries, which explains the originality of its civilisation. Northern México was populated by peoples who lived from hunting and collecting in a desert or semi-desert geographical environment. The South was populated by agricultural societies.
Eventhough in the vast Mesoamerica region (a term used by scholars to designate peoples which occupied the central area of México down to Guatemala and Honduras to the South), many different peoples with their own ethnic and linguistic differences coexisted, they had a cultural homogeneity, for instance they cultivated corn, they have a singular structure of government, they used the 365 day calendar, they built pyramids, they used similar rituals and worshiped the same gods and goddesses of the sky, of nature, of fertility and of war. The same concept of cosmic duality - the beginning and the end - appears in the religion and art of all Mesoamerican cultures. The most evident example of this cosmic duality is the god Quetzalcoatl (or Kukulkán in the Mayan area) which is represented by a feathered serpent (earth and sky).

    90. Archaeology Of The Ancient Mayan Civilization Of Mesoamerica - History Of The Ma

    http://www.jaguar-sun.com/timeline.html
It is generally believed that what we recognize as the ancient Maya culture began around 300 AD as an offshoot of the Olmec civilization. The central Mexican city of Teotihucan traded with the Maya and its influence can clearly be seen in some Maya sites, such as Tikal. In fact, the collapse of Teotihucan in the sixth century had a notable effect on the Maya, causing a virtual standstill of new construction for several decades.
Between 600 AD and 800 AD , the Classic Maya theories have been proposed to explain this "collapse" including: over-population, extensive warfare, revolt of the farmer/laborer class, or any number of devastating natural disasters. Whatever the reason, its effect was contained to the central region
By the time of the Conquest, the Maya civilization was in its Post Classic phase and had reverted to an essentially Maya culture in scattered city-states. It was this lack of cohesion that would thwart the Spaniard's attempts to conquer the Maya. Although the Maya have endured repression and persecution in one form or another for the past 500 years, more than 6 million descendants still maintain a culture that is distinctly Maya in areas of Mexico, Guatemala, Belize and Honduras.

Andrews Spring 2004 Office: College Hall 231 Anthro Lab Office Hours: Wednesday 1-3 Tue/Fri: 3:30-4:50 andrews@ncf.edu www.ncf.edu/andrews The goal of this course will be to give students a broad knowledge and an understanding of the archaeology of eastern Mesoamerica, the best-known inhabitants of which are the Olmec and the Maya. The Olmec of the southern Gulf Coast (ca. 1400B500 B.C. ) are considered by many archaeologists to have been the most precocious and artistically productive of the Early Formative societies of Mesoamerica. The Maya can be identified archaeologically as early as 1600 B.C., reached their greatest extent and development during the Classic period (ca. A.D. 250B1100), and were conquered by Spaniards beginning early in the sixteenth century. They number about five million today. At the end of the course we will examine the development of historical archaeology in the Maya area through a study of several case studies from the Colonial period and 19 th century.

Analysis of residue from a ceramic "teapot" suggests that the Maya, and their ancestors, may have been gobbling chocolate as far back as 2,600 years ago, pushing back the earliest evidence of cacao use more than 1,000 years. "This reopens the whole debate about who first invented chocolate," said Jonathan Haas, curator of the mouthwatering "Chocolate" exhibition at the Field Museum in Chicago. The True History of Chocolate, believes based on a slew of evidence, some linguistic, that the roots of chocolate go much further back to the great Olmec civilization, which preceded the Maya. This is one of three spouted vessels from Colha in Northern Belize that was found to contain a cacao residue. The spouted vessel dates to between 600 B.C. and A.D. 250.

The Olmecs T he Olmecs were the first of the ancient civilizations of Mexico, notable for their colossal stone sculptures and complex calendar system (later used by the Mayas). They originated in the present day state of Veracruz and flourished between around 1200 to 400 BC. The Olmecs built ceremonial cities, with constructions including pyramids and temples built from mud and earth. They were probably the first muralists and cave painters in Mexico, and also produced statues in jade. Typical Olmec art features jaguars, thick-lipped warriors and goatee bearded men. Often jaguar and human characteristics are combined in were-jaguar babies and children; the Olmecs believed themselves to be descendents of the jaguar and held the animal in high religious status. The largest Olmec momuments are the colossal stone heads, with thick lips and helmets. They have been found up to around 60 miles (100 km) from the source of the raw material and it is not known exactly how these 7 foot (2 meter) high sculptures were transported to the ceremonial sites where they were found. Major discoveries of Olmec artifacts have been found in La Venta and San Lorenzo Tenochtitlán. Some Olmec works, including five of the colossal heads, are on display in La Venta Park, an outdoor museum, having been relocated when the oil industry expansion threatened the original location. There is little to attract tourist to the archaeological sites, and for those on a short visit the best introduction to Olmec art is probably to be gained at the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City.

Mesoamerican Civilizations : The Preclassic Period (2000 B.C. to A.D. 250) 1700 - 400 B.C. Olmec Culture The Olmec domain extends from the Tuxtlas mountains in the west to the lowlands of the Chontalpa in the east, a region with significant variations in geology and ecology. Over 170 Olmec monuments have been found within the area, and eighty percent of those occur at the three largest Olmec centers, La Venta, Tabasco (38%), San Lorenzo Tenochtitlan, Veracruz (30%), and Laguna de los Cerros, Veracruz (12%). La Venta and San Lorenzo were inhabited as early as 1700 B.C., by peoples who were the direct ancestors to the Gulf coast. They were corn farmers who supplemented their diets with fishing and hunting. Linguists suggest that they spoke a language related to the Mixe and Zoque languages of today. These ancient Mesoamericans of the Gulf Coast region estabished structured towns laid out with central axes. One of the first major population centers, San Lorenzo, was built around a ceremonial core created with millions of cubic feet of earthen fill, moved by the basketload. At La Venta, excavations on the north side of a 32 meter-tall (106 ft.) earthen pyramid mound uncovered caches of polished jade celts, colored clay floors, and several royal burials. One burial was in a large sandstone sarcophagus carved to depict a supernatural caiman. Two other burials occurred in a tomb chamber constructed from basalt columns. All the burials included
offerings of beautiful greenstone figures, jewelry, and celts.
