History of the Maya
The Maya nation is an homogeneous group of people who have occupied roughly the same territory for thousands of years. They speak some thirty languages that are so similar that linguists believe that they all have the same origin, a proto Mayan language that could be as much as 7000 years old! They will will explain how geographical isolation made the original language evolve towards an eastern branch subdivided into proto-K'iche and Mam and a western branch subdivided into proto-Q'anjob and proto-Tzeltal and how the further division of these sub branches gave rise to the 30 languages spoken today. The in situ evolution of their language implies that they were the original permanent inhabitants of the Maya area and suggests that that today's two million Mayas probably share a very ancient common genetic origin. That is quite different from the warlike Aztec and Inca nations who invaded their neighbours and absorbed their populations by imposing their language, customs and religion. The Aztecs were a small ambitious "Chichimec" (savage) tribe from the north west who migrated into new lands, absorbed new ideas, evolved further and grew powerful enough to impose their language and gods (Huitzilopochtli), on the indigenous people they conquered. It is the story of outsiders becoming the governing elite of pre-existing populations for a relatively short time. The Incas of Cuzco were also a short lived foreign elite governing a wide variety of pre-existing nations.

Herbert Read
Art Historian Since the appearance of the Olmec culture, considered to be the “mother of the Mesoamerican cultures”, ceramics took a prevailing place in the lives of the Mexican people. The earthenware vessels, anthropomorphic figures, and various types of utensils found in the archaeological ruins of the ancient Olmec cities of Tajin San Lorenzo La Venta and Tres Zapotes , suggest the techniques used in their ceramics: the use of clay, the knowledge of some primitive firing techniques, their means of coloring and painting designs. The Olmecs transcended their era (1500 B.C. –800 A.D) and bequeathed their knowledge to the cultures that flourished after them. The Teotihuacans (100 B.C. – 800 A.D.) prepared the majority of their vessels with clay and decorated them with a variety of techniques:

A BRIEF HISTORY OF MEXICO
Mexico is a rich tapestry of ancient civilizations, diverse cultures, colonial cities, exquisite landscapes and traditions of dance, folk art and songs. It is a country steeped in history where the past meets the present and every place presents the drama of living archaeology. Long before the arrival of the first Europeans, the peoples of ancient Mexico developed complex civilizations with brilliant achievements in agriculture, architecture, astronomy, mathematics, hieroglyphic writing and military strategy. Over 115,000 registered archaeological sites document a fascinating Pre-Columbian past. The Olmec culture is thought by some to be the mother culture of Mesoamerican civilization. They lived around 1200 to 800 BC on the Gulf coast lowlands of southern Veracruz and Tabasco. They were accomplished stone sculptors who developed a system of numbers and a prototype for the Maya calendar. However, some archaeologists believe that Olmec sites may have been colonial outposts organized for trade between the coastal lowlands and the central highlands where newly discovered artifacts predate the Olmec period by as much as 400 years. The Maya of the Yucatan Peninsula flourished from about 250 BC to 900 AD. They were great architects and builders whose cities boasted magnificent palaces, pyramidal temples and large, paved plazas that sometimes served as a catchment area for collecting water in underground tanks called

Article about the ancient olmec, what is known of their religion, and the origins of the god Quetzalcoatl.
http://weber.ucsd.edu/~anthclub/quetzalcoatl/quetzal.htm
Quetzalcoatl: The Man, The Myth, The Legend
Introduction Background Map of the Area Pronounciation ... References Introduction Quetzalcoatl. We've all heard the name before. "He's that Feathered Serpent of Ancient Mexico". However, that only answers the WHAT. Ask, WHO he was, and you might get an answer along the lines of an unintelligble stare; or the standard response, "Yeah. He was the guy who was suppose to return from the East to reclaim his power, but the Indians mistook Cortés for him instead". Though it might seem a simple enough question, a far more involved and complicated answer is necessary. First of all, Quetzalcoatl was a god of such importance and power that nearly no aspect of everyday life seemed to go untouched by him. Secondly, as a historical figure, his actions would nor could not be contained by the History and thus eventually evolved into myth. And as a legend, he would signal the end of mortal kingship. An interesting phenomena that distinguished Quetzalcoatl is that despite the fact he is not the most powerful of gods within the Mesoamerican pantheon, or one of the eldest, he is nonetheless an integral part of the system. This was partially accomplished by his ability to integrate himself so securely to attributes of his fellow brethren, to such an extent that it is virtually impossible to tell if Quetzalcoatl was the true originator or vise versa. Hence, to establish a single definitive personality to a god is extremely difficult. Lastly, it must be kept in mind that despite Quetzalcoatl being an Aztec name, the cultures preceding them had their name for him as well, and applying their own unique attributes to him. Consequently, Quetzalcoatl is related to many names and incarnations, and seems to play a prominent role in a pantheon of virtually all the other Mesoamerican deities. Quetzalcoatl himself goes by the names of Gukumatz, Nine Wind, and Kukulcan among others. These are the most common names found in the general Aztec and Mayan cultures, with Quetzalcoatl maintaining a host of avatars with whom he is intimately connected with or represented by. There are also certain gods that Quetzalcoatl is involved with most of the time as well, such as Xolotl, Tlaloc, Xipe, and Tezcatlipoca. These "upper level" gods are either contrary, complimentary, or both at the same time towards Quetzalcoatl, creating a sense of duality around these myths.
