The Sacred Heart church at Navina was built at a cost of $1,600.00. The Catholic Extension Society donated $300.00 and the rest was raised by parishioners. The church was all paid for before it was dedicated on March 23, 1914 by Bishop Meerschaert. The estimated value of the Navina property in 1918 was $2,000.00. On May 9th, Father J. B. Dudek said his first Mass after ordination at St. John's. He had come to Oklahoma as a child in 1894 and was a convert to Catholicism at the age of 15. He had been a music professor at the Edmond Normal School and a deputy parole officer at the state penitentiary in McAlester before he went to the seminary. His parents lived in Edmond and he was the first priest to be ordained from the parish of St. John's. Father Dudek was a scholarly prolific writer who was appointed chancelor of the diocese in 1925, a post that he held for 30 years. After World War I, anti-Catholic bigotry reached its highest level in Oklahoma. The Ku Klux Klan had an estimated active state membership of 70,000. There were three anti-Catholic newspapers with statewide circulations and a number of popular anti-Catholic lecturers. Job discrimination against Catholics was evident and there were threats against parochial schools.

DREW EDMONDSON ATTORNEY GENERAL OF OKLAHOMA
January 20, 1995 The Honorable Tim Pope
State Representative 504
State Capitol Building
Oklahoma City, Ok. 73105 Re: Informal Opinion Number 94-522 Dear Representative Pope: Attorney General Edmondson has asked me to respond to your letter requesting an opinion addressing, in effect, the following question:
Would the implementation of Christian based religious counseling by the Oklahoma State Department of Health as a part of its HIV/STD programs violate the First Amendment of the United States Constitution?
Because the specific question you pose is to some extent fact based, we respond by way of an informal letter, which is not an official opinion of the Attorney General but rather is solely the opinion of undersigned counsel reached after careful research and analysis of the question raised. According to your letter, you are considering proposing that the Oklahoma State Department of Health include as a part of its HIV/STD programs counseling by religious organizations to encourage lifestyle changes. The materials you enclose with your letter describe the counseling you have in mind as counseling conducted by religious organizations which attempt to discourage certain lifestyles through Christian based religious indoctrination. The answer to your question turns upon an analysis of whether this kind of state sponsored counseling would violate the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment to the United States Constitution. The Establishment Clause provides, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion." This clause is made applicable to the states by virtue of the Fourteenth Amendment.

I agree with Laura!!
Here in Bixby Oklahoma, there are over 20 protestant churches and yet there is a great deal of hatred against those who are too poor and not "white enough".I'm poor and caring for my dad,but we are a target to mocked and hated.
Hell, one of them even gave the "finger".In Bixby a person would have to be "white and rich"to be accepted into the congregation.I will convert back to Catholic faith!!!
You have a nice day Laura, and thank-you for reading reply!

AWARD OF MERIT FOR SERVICE TO SCIENCE IN OKLAHOMA PHILLIPS PETROLEUM COMPANY
Top of Page Table of Contents Home The Phillips Petroleum Company, Bartlesville, Oklahoma, was presented this award of merit at the November 1985 technical meeting of the Oklahoma Academy of Science in Shawnee. The award recognizes Phillips for establishing a tradition of active concern for the quality of science education, other education, and science, not only in Oklahoma, but throughout this region of the nation. The following is a partial listing of recent contributions by Phillips Petroleum Company to science and science education in Oklahoma.
Classroom Visits.
Scientists from Phillips Research Center frequently lecture in classrooms of elementary schools and at colleges and universities on a variety of science topics. Lectures to elementary and secondary classes are usually in the Bartlesville vicinity, but those at colleges and universities may be anywhere in or outside of Oklahoma. The Robotics group of Research and Development last year developed a program on robotics for elementary schools. This program, which featured a "Hero" robot and video slide presentations, was presented in dozens of schools from Tulsa to the Kansas border and beyond. Other researchers addressed classes in chemistry, engineering, geology, physics, microbiology, and other areas of science. Such visits to Oklahoma public schools in the 1984-85 school year numbered approximately 100.

State To Study Teen Marijuana Use
The Oklahoman; March 11, 2003
by Jim Killackey
As many as 10,000 Oklahoma schoolchildren ages 12 to 17 will be surveyed this fall about their use of illicit drugs, alcohol and tobacco as part of a first-ever survey by the state Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services Department.
A primary goal is to pinpoint the adolescent use of marijuana, the most commonly used illegal drug among Oklahoma teenagers, said Larry Didier, the mental health agency's prevention program coordinator.
Marijuana use represents nearly 60 percent of all illicit drug use among Oklahoma youths, he said.
Students in grades six, eight, 10 and 12 from about 80 randomly selected public school districts statewide will participate in the 180-question survey this fall, Didier said Monday. Some private and parochial schools also may choose to participate. Cost of the survey is about $100,000, he said.
Surveys will be given in late September and October, with results expected by Jan. 1. Each survey can be completed in about 35 to 50 minutes. Names of school districts and survey participants will be kept confidential. Parents and guardians will be sent home a letter in late April or May outlining involvement in the surveys.
Latest available data show at least 19,000 Oklahoma youths between the ages of 12 and 17 use marijuana on a regular basis. In Oklahoma, marijuana has surpassed alcohol as the top substance responsible for adolescent admissions into drug-abuse treatment programs, Didier said.

Criticism of middle schools fuels renewed interest in a school configuration of yesteryear BY PRISCILLA PARDINI
Less than one year after signing on as chief executive officer of the 77,000-student Cleveland schools in late 1998, Barbara Byrd-Bennett came to the conclusion that the district’s 25 middle schools were failing. Overall, test scores plummeted once students reached 6th grade and absence and suspension rates soared.
Byrd-Bennett concluded that Cleveland’s middle school model, mandated by the courts to address overcrowding, had not been well thought out. The schools were too big. Teachers had not been adequately trained in, nor had the resources to implement, a true middle school philosophy. Beyond that, Byrd-Bennett had come to believe that the configuration of grades 6-8 that prevailed in Cleveland’s middle schools actually worked against the needs of young adolescents.
“Here we were,” she says, “taking children at 10at their most delicateand ripping them from a stable school environment. Then we put them in a new school where they had to move from class to class, learning to deal with a series of other adults while they were still learning to deal with each other.”

America Says No To Vouchers
By Frosty Troy
Most Americans love and support public education, a fact that is driving rightwingers to despair. From Education Secretary Rod Paige and William Bennett to Rush Limbaugh and "Doctor" Laura, a new Gallup Poll knocks down their false, relentless, malicious attack on public schools and public educators. Americans give record high grades to the public schools, and they don't want tax money used to underwrite private and parochial schools. These are among the major findings in the 33rd Phi Delta Kappa/Gallup Poll of the Public's Attitudes Toward the Public Schools. The schools have an all-time high public approval rating. The 51% assigning an A or B to schools marks the first time a majority of the public has given grades this high. The 51% is an increase of 11% since 1990 and is a fitting close to a decade in which public school approval ratings climbed steadily despite what might reasonably be described as less than favorable media coverage. Support among parents who have children in public schools jumped even higher, with 68% giving As and Bs to schools attended by their oldest child. Support for the use of public funds for parents and students to use in attending private and church-related schools is only 34%. Some polls have it as low as 22%.
