Census 2000 American Indian, Alaska Native, Hawaiian Home Land Block Maps
These large scale, large format (36" x 33") maps depict the smallest geographic entities for which the Census Bureau presents data, census blocks. The maps show the boundaries, names, and codes for American Indian/Alaska Native/Hawaiian Homeland areas, counties, county subdivisions, places, census tracts and blocks. Base feature detail, such as roads, railroads, and water features based on Census 2000 TIGER are also shown. The scale of the maps has been optimized to keep the number of map sheets for each area to a minimum, but the scale and number of sheets will vary by the area size of the county and the complexity of the census blocks. The maps are grouped by the entity types listed below:
  • Federally Designated American Indian/Alaska Native Area Maps (AIR_Federal). Both federal and state reservations may cross the boundaries of counties, county subdivisions, and places. State Designated American Indian/Alaska Native Area Maps (AIR_State). Both federal and state reservations may cross the boundaries of counties, county subdivisions, and places.

He feels that standardization comes through education about the official geographic names, including the principles, policies, and procedures that apply to their application for placement on maps and in publications.

During this period, the French-Indian War, the Revolutionary War, and the War of 1812 all played a critical role in the development of improved roads in America. The roads identified begin with the King's highway of 1735 from boston to charleton and end with the roads resulting from the War of 1812 in the Old Southwest. the historical events that led to the opening of the Old Northwest and southwest for settlement are discussed to demonstate the importance of the time periods and historical factors that preceded the migrations of Americans. These events are important to understand why and when certain wagon roads became available for the first time. The routes illustrated in thirteen unique maps are important to important to family researchers., Dollarhide, 1997, 41pp $10.00 Atlas of American Indian Affairs, Prucha, 1990, 191pp $50.00

    Migrations
When the Emancipation Proclamation was signed less than 8 percent of the African-American population lived in the Northeast or Midwest. Even by 1900, approximately 90 percent of all African- Americans still resided in the South. However, migration from the South has long been a significant feature of black history. An early exodus from the South occurred between 1879 and 1881, when about 60,000 African-Americans moved into Kansas and others settled in the Oklahoma Indian Territories in search of social and economic freedom. In the early decades of the twentieth century, movement of blacks to the North increased tremendously. The reasons for this "Great Migration," as it came to be called, are complex. Thousands of African-Americans left the South to escape sharecropping, worsening economic conditions, and the lynch mob. They sought higher wages, better homes, and political rights. Between 1940 and 1970 continued migration transformed the country's African-American population from a predominately southern, rural group to a northern, urban one. The movement of African-Americans within the United States continues today. Further research in the Library's general and special collections could help assess how migration affected social and economic changes in individual cities, towns, neighborhoods, and even families.

Descendants of more than 60 tribes make Oklahoma second only to California in Indian population. In the early 1800s the region was established as Indian Territory, a vast reserve for displaced Native Americans. The eastern Indian Territory remained separate until 1906. Eventually land-hungry farmers swallowed up Indian Territory, and Oklahoma was born in 1907. This state of "soil, oil, and toil" has weathered hard times. The droughts and dust storms of the Depression years forced Okies westward in desperate search of work. The state's economy has been broadly diversified from its traditional oil and agriculture base.
