This website is provided by the Oklahoma Biological Survey to aid persons interested in the study and identification of the woody plants of Oklahoma. The information provided was developed with both the academic and amateur in mind. It is our hope that in doing so a broader audience will come to appreciate the richness and variety of the Oklahoma flora. There are approximately 2,400 plant species in Oklahoma (Taylor and Taylor 1994) and about 330 are trees, shrubs, or woody vines. For the purpose of this document, a woody plant is defined as a plant that retains some living woody material at or above ground level through the non-growing season (several species of small cacti fit this definition, but are not recognized trees or shrubs). Categorizing a woody plant as "tree", "shrub", or "vine" is often difficult and can appear arbitrary. Distinguishing between a tree and a shrub can be particularly difficult. That is why it is not unusual to see descriptions such as "small tree or large shrub." In this treatment we have adopted the following definitions: a tree is a woody plant that is at least 10 cm (4 in ) in diameter at 1.4 m (4.5 ft) above ground level; a shrub is less than 10 cm in diameter at 1.4 m above the ground and usually has multiple stems or is clonal; a woody vine does not stand upright without support but climbs on other vegetation or sprawls on the ground.

Click and Learn - Online Educational Software History Comes Alive on Oklahoma Maps STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES (Objectives) Given a copy of the official map of Oklahoma and a blank Oklahoma counties map, students should be able to locate and draw several historical features of our state. FIVE STEP LESSON PLAN Set Induction/Anticipatory Set:
Ask the students if they have ever heard of the Chisolm trail. Explain that this was the path taken by thousands of cattle many years ago to get from Texas to the markets in Kansas. Explain that, before the highway system and property ownership, the land was unbounded by fences or roads. Instruction/Teaching to the Objective:
Tell the students of changes that you have seen in the state during your lifetime. Highways are being widened and interstate exchanges have been built. Explain that Oklahoma was much different 100 years ago than it is today. As one of the last states to be admitted to the union, the land was mostly open grazing land. Guided Practice:
Model how you would use the legend on the official map of Oklahoma to find the symbol for the Chisolm trail. Use the two maps together to locate and draw the lowest one inch (1") of the Chisolm trail. Use the legend to find the symbol for the Oklahoma Welcome Center. Mark one of the Welcome centers on your map. Independent Practice:
Distribute a copy of the official map of Oklahoma and the Oklahoma Counties map from the Click and Learn software. Have the students locate and draw the Chisolm Trail, Historic Route 66, the new Amtrak route from Oklahoma City to Ft. Worth (along existing railroad track), and the Oklahoma Welcome Centers on their blank Oklahoma counties map. Monitor their work.

Geography People Government ... Physical Map Introduction [Top of Page] The name Oklahoma comes from two Choctaw Indian words, okla, which means "people," and humma, which means "red." In 1889, Congress opened up 2 million acres for white settlement (it was previously open only to Native Americans who were forced to leave their homelands), and the first of a number of land runs began. Some of the state's settlers were called "Sooners" because they had already staked their land claims before the land was officially opened for settlement. Oklahoma was admitted as the 46th state in 1907. Oklahoma's capital is an easy one to rememberOklahoma City. The state flower is the mistletoe, a favorite for kissing under during the winter holidays. Tulsa, Oklahoma
Tulsa is the second-largest city in Oklahoma . As of the census, the city had a total population of 393,049. It is the county seat of Tulsa County
    History
Tulsa began as "Tulsy", a Creek Indian word meaning "old town" and in the 1890's, a trading post in the village became a post office under the name "Tulsey Town". In 1882, the railroad brought white settlers and Tulsa, became a cattle-shipping center. Then, in 1901, the nearby town of Red Fork became the site of a giant oil deposit find. Four years later, Glenpool , another nearby town, began produced oil as well. Thus, Tulsa's golden age was in the 1920's when Tulsa was the Oil Capital of the World. Tulsa is also known for the Tulsa Race Riot , the worst hate crime in U.S. history. The Greenwood District of north Tulsa was burned, and gangs of whites indiscriminately murdered blacks. Tulsa is a city still marred by a rigid geographic division between predominately poor and African-American north Tulsa, and predominately wealthy and white south Tulsa.

As a matter of fact, this morning before school, Hannah and I practiced very hard with your click and learn software, and we believe very strongly that we got A+ on the tests that we took today as well. Your software is extremely efficient, and we were as prepared as you can get for a test when we took it. Thank you very much! Joanna Joanna, Middle School, Arkansas "My seventh grade students learned all 49 countries of Africa in 70 minutes!" Chris Jones, Middle School Teacher; Pueblo, Colorado. "One of my students that had never passed a test the entire year made a perfect score on the latest test because of Click and Learn." Dale Allen, Middle School Science Teacher, Oklahoma. "Thanks for letting me use your software. I was the only one in my class to score 100% on our geography test."
