October 21, 2003
Oklahoma Library Association Representative
Wayne Hanway The Governor of Oklahoma, Brad Henry, held a press conference on October 15th to announce the Read Y'All Campaign. The campaign is to increase awareness of the problem of illiteracy in Oklahoma and to promote the libraries, literacy organizations, and others who offer assistance to those who want to improve their reading abilities. The Governor and First Lady are featured on a poster for the campaign. Their photograph was taken by the noted photographer, David Fitzgerald. The Read Y'All campaign is a joint project of the Metropolitan Library System, the Oklahoma Library Association, the Tulsa City-County Library, and the Oklahoma Department of Libraries. The Buffalo Public Library had a grand opening following their renovation. The library received a grant from the Oklahoma Department of Libraries and donations from private individuals to fund the renovation. The library doubled its available space. The Oklahoma Library Association plans to hold its first OLA Leadership Institute November 3 – 6, 2004, at the Noble Foundation, in Ardmore.

New Policy for Cell Phone Use in the Library
As of April 27, 2004, the Al Harris Library has instituted a new policy regarding cell phone use in the library. Library users are asked to respect the research and study environment of the Library by using polite cell phone etiquette. Cell phones should be turned off while in the library. If it is absolutely necessary that the phone remains on, then the ring tones should be set to vibrate or at the lowest ring volume available. Conversations should be kept brief and in a quiet voice. Cell phones should not be used in the stairwells or quiet study areas. Enclosed group study rooms or the basement lounge are appropriate areas to take calls. Library users with distracting cell phone etiquette will be asked to move to a more appropriate area or leave the Library. Posted by dupreej at 10:46 AM
