Oklahoma
The name Oklahoma comes from two Choctaw Indian words, okla, which means "people," and humma, which means "red." In 1889, Congress opened up 2 million acres for white settlement (it was previously open only to Native Americans who were forced to leave their homelands), and the first of a number of land runs began. Some of the state's settlers were called "Sooners" because they had already staked their land claims before the land was officially opened for settlement. Oklahoma was admitted as the 46th state in 1907. Oklahoma's capital is an easy one to rememberOklahoma City. The state flower is the mistletoe, a favorite for kissing under during the winter holidays.

MESSAGE BOARD NCAA Football DESTINATIONS Recruiting NCAA on CBS POLL Should the Rose Bowl leave the BCS and go back to its traditional Big Ten vs. Pac-10 matchup? Yes No Double take The new format is unlikely to reduce the chance of dual champions. (Getty Images) Think the new double-hosting model is the long-awaited cure for a confusing, convoluted BCS structure? Think again. The new format is simply the BCS committee's last stand before it must finally concede to adopting a full-fledged playoff system, says Dennis Dodd. Bush praises Oklahoma City as he dedicates bombing museum
President Bush: "Your loss was great and your pain was deep. Far greater and deeper was your care for one another. That is what lasts." OKLAHOMA CITY , Oklahoma (CNN) President Bush, speaking Monday at the dedication ceremony for a museum and interactive media center commemorating the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, said all Americans must remember the goodness of what was lost to that fearful terrorist act. "The time of mourning has passed, but the time of remembering will never pass," Bush told the citizens of Oklahoma City. "Your loss was great, and your pain was deep. Far greater and deeper was your care for one another, and that is what brings us back to this place today," Bush said. Bush arrived in Oklahoma late in the morning Monday to begin his work week by dedicating the Oklahoma City facility, dedicated to the 168 victims of the most lethal terrorist act ever carried out on U.S. soil, the truck bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building.

1995 - EE.UU.
