OKLAHOMA PARENTS AS TEACHERS (OPAT)
OPAT is a unique parent education program designed to give children the best possible start in life. The program is based on the philosophy that parents are their children's first and most important teachers. It is a voluntary program for all parents with children birth to age three.
OPAT is affiliated with the nationally validated Parents As Teachers program which originated as a pilot program in Missouri in 1981. It is now implemented in 49 states and 6 countries. Oklahoma now has 131 programs which serve 187 school districts. It is projected that during the 2000-2001 school year, OPAT will serve over 7,500 children.
The goal of the Oklahoma Parents As Teachers program is to strengthen the capacity of parents to be effective first teachers. The program is designed to maximize a child's overall development during the first three years of life, lay the foundation for school success and minimize developmental problems that interfere with the child's learning.
OPAT is also designed to foster an early partnership between home and school so that parents take a far more active role during their children's formal years of schooling. Other intended benefits of the program include: positive parental attitudes toward the school district, early identification of sensory or developmental problems, and reduction in the need for expensive remediation and special education programs.

Louis Beam, Leaderless Resistance, (text from Cyberspace Minuteman BBS, (312) 275-6326) "THE FUNDAMENTAL RULE GUIDING THE ORGANIZATION OF THE FREE MILITIA IS GENERALIZED PRINCIPLES AND PLANNING BUT DECENTRALIZED TACTICS AND ACTION." "What is meant by this key statement is that the whole Militia must be committed to the same cause and coordinated in their joint defense of a community. Thus, there must be allegiance to a higher command. But specific tactics should be left up the individual elements so that compromise of a part does not compromise the whole. Furthermore, all training and combat actions should be up to the smaller elements, again so that isolation or decapitation does not render the smaller units inept." "The way a balance between these competing concerns is achieved in the Free Militia is to organize all elements into 'cells.'"

Crown Heights United Methodist Church to celebrate 75th Aniversary
It was on June 20, 1929, that nine persons met in the home of Mrs. L.A. Brittain to begin planning for a new Methodist church in what was then the suburbs of Oklahoma City. From these humble beginnings would rise a congregation that would be a spiritual home for hundreds of people from all walks of life.
On Sunday, June 6, our congregation will celebrate its 75th anniversary with a grand homecoming celebration. We will gather for one worship service starting at 10:00 a.m. that will include a review of our history, recognition of members by decades, and special music. We will then proceed to a lunch in our Fellowship Hall and outdoors with entertainment for all ages. If do not attend our church but would like to come for the lunch, please call the church office at 524-8428 so we can plan accordingly.

Substance Abuse Among Female Prisoners in Oklahoma

Abstract
Using a volunteer sample of 547 women prisoners, this study compares drug users and nondrug users, White and Black drug users, and multiple drug use by race. Drug users are significantly more likely to be older, have a lengthier history of involvement with the criminal justice system, be serving time for a drug-related offense, and report more physical and emotional abuse than are nondrug users. Black drug users are significantly more likely to have used cocaine and to be currently serving time for Larceny, whereas White drug users are more likely to use a variety of drugs and to report higher levels of abuse. It is found that for Black women, abuse and lower levels of self- esteem are correlated with multiple drug use, whereas among White women, multiple drug use is correlated with history of criminal justice system involvement. Although the number of women in U.S. state prisons is small compared to that of incarcerated men, the female inmate population has grown more rapidly than that of males every year since 1981 (Bureau of Justice, March, 1991). Women currently represent approximately 5.7 percent of the total inmate population in the United States; however, they comprise 12 percent of Oklahoma's prison population. For several years, the state of Oklahoma has led the nation in per capita rates of incarceration for women and its female inmate population literally doubled over a five year period (Oklahoma Department of Corrections, 1989).
