The Native American Heritage
Oklahoma's Native American population is the largest in the nation : 252,420 at the 1990 census. Several indigenous cultures existed in the area before the first European visited in 1541. Francisco Coronado almost certainly crossed Oklahoma in that year, and Hernando De Soto may have visited E Oklahoma. Later Juan de Onate passed through W Oklahoma, and some other Spanish explorers and traders and French traders from Louisiana visited the region, but there was no development of the area. Tribes of the Plains cultures : Osage, Kiowa, Comanche, and Apache : dominated the west; the Wichita and other relatively sedentary tribes lived farther east. It is asserted that the first European trading post was established at Salina by the Chouteau family of St. Louis before the territory was transferred to the United States by the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, but the land remained in control of the sparse and nomadic native population. For the most part only traders, official explorers (notably Stephen H. Long), and scientific and curious travelers (among them Washington Irving and George Catlin) came into the present-day state.

History of NA in Oklahoma T
he following represents a simplified but researched overview of early Oklahoma NA, reaching back to the 1970s and 1980s when a handful of scattered addicts formed groups throughout the state and traveled long distances to support each other and to change that tired old lie Once an addict, always an addict. Addicts in Enid, Norman and Tulsa formed the first meetings that survived long enough to form a small service structure in the 1970s. These groups joined the Mid America Region, which included groups from Iowa, Nebraska,Kansas, and Missouri. Groups also soon formed in Oklahoma City, Lawton and Tahlequah and other parts of the state. The first known Shawnee meeting was established by Marg J. and Harlond P. about 1978 and held in a house a 502 N. Beard. The meeting did not survive and it would be seven more years before NA would make it Shawnee. Marg J. and Harlond P. are still clean today. The Oklahoma groups established the Joint Area Service Committee in 1980 and remained part of the Mid America Region. The old JASC comprised the Western and Eastern areas. Oklahoma was still not a region yet and NA members continued to drive long distances to support each others' meetings. About six to eight groups had formed in Oklahoma by 1980.

by Greg Yort
(Written for the 25th Anniversary Celebration in 1998)
In 1973, Reverend Leroy Kerbo, Reverend Kenneth Adams and Reverend Paul Henson walked in the doors of a church building at 11th and Pesotum to ask for God's direction in the establishment of a new church. From that prayer meeting, God called for the birth of The Shawnee Oak Park Church of God. Since that day there have been many challenges faced by this church. But, through it all, the Lord has truly prospered Oak Park. The Lords blessings of prosperity can be seen throughout the history of Oak Let's go back 25 years to Oak Park's humble beginning. Oak Park began with only 20 charter members. The seating capacity of the original sanctuary was 380. There were approximately 20 classrooms, two nursery areas, a children's sanctuary, a fellowship hall and a few church offices. The sanctuary looked much different 25 years The floors were mostly tile, with red carpet on the isles and stage. The stage was smaller, with rooms on both sides. There were rock plant stands on both sides. There was no sound room. The sound was controlled from inside the pulpit. The pews were not padded or upholstered. There were double doors in the center of the West wall and in the center of the North wall. A cry room and very small bathroom were just outside the sanctuary. The old ceiling was one height, with much less lighting. The lights above the center section were arranged in the shape of a cross.

History of the NWS Cooperative
Weather Observer Program
Thomas Jefferson first envisioned the Cooperative Weather Observation program in the early 1770's. During the time from 1776 through 1816, Thomas Jefferson had acted upon his idea, had established observers in every county of Virginia, and had established the program in 5 other states. They included Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New York and North Carolina. During the early and mid 1800's, weather observation networks began to grow and expand across the United States. Although most basic meteorological instruments had existed for over 100 years, the telegraph was largely responsible for the advancement of operational meteorology during the 19th century. With the advent of the telegraph, officials at one location could "rapidly" collect, plot and analyze observations from stations far away. In 1849, the Smithsonian Institution began to supply weather instruments to telegraph companies and further establish an extensive observation network. Observations were submitted by telegraph to the Smithsonian, where weather maps were created.

The first earthquake known to have centered in the State occurred in September 1918. A series of shocks at El Reno produced only minor effects; the strongest was intensity V on September 10. Objects were thrown from shelves. Other shocks occurred on the next day. On December 27, 1929, another tremor centered in the same area was felt in portions of central and western Oklahoma. Some plaster cracked and at least one chimney fell (intensity VI) at El Reno. In addition, clocks stopped, objects moved, and some reports indicated the walls and floors seemed to sway. In several cities, people rushed from their homes in alarm. The total felt area included about 20,000 square kilometers. The magnitude 5.5

Jane Collins Ulrich janec@ldd.net "I am from Anadarko, Caddo Co., OK and lived in a former poorfarm house in the latter 1950s, about 4 miles east of Anadarko. The house was at this time a large 13 bedroom, large kitchen, dining room, full basement spacious hallway separating rooms, full length covered porch, huge bell on top of house and surprisingly his & hers outhouses. Several large barns, a creek and farm land with plenty of room for vegetable gardens or whatever. The house was later somehow dismantled into several different sections and moved into Anadarko as residential homes."
