Oklahoma, also called "The Sooner State," is smack dab in the middle of the Heartland, USA. The name Oklahoma is from the Choctaw Nation words "okla" meaning people, and "humma" meaning red... "Red People." The largest population (250,000) of Native American Indians in the United States, with Tribal Headquarters for 39 Tribes, are in Oklahoma. The state was known as Indian Territory when the 5 civilized Tribes were forced to relocate here, during 1838-1839, from their homes in the southeast as ordered by President Jackson in what is known as the " Trail of Tears ." A treaty then swore this would be the Indians' Promised Land, "for as long as the grass grows and the water flows." However, in 1893 a choice portion of Indian Territory in Oklahoma was opened up for white settlement in one of the most bizarre events known to American History. Over 100,000 people lined up along 165 miles of the Kansas border ready to take off and stake their claims in the Land Rush . Those Federal Marshals, railroad personnel, and others who were legally allowed in the territory before the shot fired at noon, starting the race into "

OKLAHOMA'S HISTORY BEGINNINGS Oklahoma' s recorded history began in 1541 when Spanish explorer Coronado ventured through the area on his quest for the "Lost City of Gold." The land that would eventually be known as Oklahoma was part of the 1803 Louisiana Purchase. Beginning in the 1820s, the Five Civilized Tribes from the southeastern United States were relocated to Indian Territory over numerous routes, the most famous being the Cherokee "Trail of Tears." Forced off their ancestral lands by state and federal governments, the tribes suffered great hardships during the rigorous trips west. The survivors eventually recovered from the dislocation through hard work and communal support. Gradually, new institutions and cultural adaptations emerged and began a period of rapid development often called the "Golden Age" of Indian Territory. Following the destruction of the Civil War, Oklahoma became a part of the booming cattle industry, ushering in the era of the cowboy. Western expansion reached the territory in the late 1800s, sparking a controversy over the fate of the land. Treaties enacted after the Civil War by the U.S. government forced the tribes to give up their communal lands and accept individual property allotments to make way for expansion. There was talk of using Indian Territory for settlement by African Americans emancipated from slavery. However, the government relented to pressure, much of it coming from

The government decided to open the western parts of the territory to settlers by holding a total of six land runs between 1889 and 1895. Just a little over a century ago , the site of Oklahoma City was a grass-and-timbered land of gently rolling hills flattening out into prairie in the west. Today, Oklahoma City sprawls across 625 square miles of America's heartland. It's metro population numbers over a million - a third of the entire state's population. Oklahoma and Oklahoma City have a fascinating history that stretches back past the oil boom, the Great Land Run of 1889, the great cattle drives, the Civil War, the Five Civilized Tribes, and the Plains Indians, back before Coronado crossed the land looking for his City of Gold - back to when thundering herds of dinosaurs roamed the windy prairies. You won't find every question about Oklahoma answered here (there are libraries for that), but hopefully many of your most pressing queries can be taken care of within these pages, and the pages of the other linked websites.

Brief history of the classic musical by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, plus links to cast albums and sheet music.
    http://www.imagi-nation.com/moonstruck/albm36.html
Oklahoma! Music: Richard Rodgers Based on Green Grow the Lilacs , a stage play by Lynn Riggs, Oklahoma! brought together for the first time composer Richard Rodgers and lyricist/librettist Oscar Hammerstein II. The duo would go on to write nine Broadway musicals together, but none would be as important for the development of American musical theatre as Oklahoma! A milestone in its fusion of story, song and dance, the production even featured a dream ballet (choreographed by Agnes de Mille) which revealed the main characters hidden fears and desires. The plot is simple, revolving mainly around the question of who will take Laurey Williams to the box socialthe decent Curly McLain or the sinister Jud Fry. However, Oklahoma! continued in the tradition of Show Boat in its depiction of the pioneering men and women of the American Southwest. Oklahoma! opened at the St. James Theatre on March 31, 1943 and ran for 2,212 performances. The original cast featured Joan Roberts as Laurey Williams, Alfred Drake as Curly McLain and Howard Da Silva as Jud Fry. The 1955 film version featured Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones.
