Clearinghouse of the Oklahoma Department of Libraries was charged with the responsibility to establish an oklahoma government publications depository library
http://www.nwalva.edu/library/govdoc/backgrd.htm
About the Federal Depository Library Program Our library is one of nearly 1400 federal depository libraries that exist throughout the United States and its territories. Congress established the Federal Depository Library Program based on three principles:
  • With certain exceptions, all U.S. government publications shall be made available to federal depository libraries. Federal depository libraries shall be in each state and U.S. congressional district to make government publications widely available. These government publications shall be available for the free use of the public.
From a modest beginning in the early 1800's, the Federal Depository Library Program has grown into a system of nearly 1400 federal depository libraries. With few exceptions, all congressional districts and territories of the United States have at least one federal depository library. These depositories are housed in congressionally designated academic, law, and public libraries. Each depository library gives its surrounding community free access to government information. About Oklahoma Documents Created by legislation in 1978, the Publications Clearinghouse of the Oklahoma Department of Libraries was charged with the responsibility "to establish an Oklahoma government publications depository library system for the use of the citizens of the State of Oklahoma; to collect state publications from every state agency and to retain and preserve permanently... copies of all such publications." Publications received by the Clearinghouse from state government agencies are distributed to a network of fifteen depository libraries located throughout Oklahoma, as well as the U.S. Library of Congress.

    OKLAHOMA HISTORICAL SOCIETY
    ARCHIVES DIVISION
The Archives and Manuscripts Division consists of five departments within its structure. First and foremost is the Indian Archives. Created in 1934, the collection contains 3.5 million documents pertaining to 67 tribes who were indigenous to Oklahoma or were forcibly removed west of the Mississippi River and resettled within the borders of the state during the l9th Century. Of these records, the Five Civilized Tribes are most prominent.
The Photographic Archives contains some 630,000 black and white or color images from 1846 to the present. Subjects include Native Americans; the old west; land openings which settled the territory; depression era; and contemporary images of the state and her people.
The Oral History collection had its beginnings in 1965 with the creation of the Living Legends series. Since that time, the collection has grown to over 6,000 audio as well as 3,000 video interviews. Persons from all walks of life have related their experiences for future generations to research.
The Newspaper Department was founded in 1893. The members of the Territorial Press Association were instrumental in the development of the Historical Society. Their foresight in determining that local news was important to retain as a historical record is why the Society has one of the most complete collections of newspapers in the United States. In 1957, the Society began to microfilm the collection. Consequently, the collection contains 30,000 reels of film from 1844 to the present.

Oklahoma, also called "The Sooner State," is smack dab in the middle of the Heartland, USA. The name Oklahoma is from the Choctaw Nation words "okla" meaning people, and "humma" meaning red... "Red People." The largest population (250,000) of Native American Indians in the United States, with Tribal Headquarters for 39 Tribes, are in Oklahoma. The state was known as Indian Territory when the 5 civilized Tribes were forced to relocate here, during 1838-1839, from their homes in the southeast as ordered by President Jackson in what is known as the " Trail of Tears ." A treaty then swore this would be the Indians' Promised Land, "for as long as the grass grows and the water flows." However, in 1893 a choice portion of Indian Territory in Oklahoma was opened up for white settlement in one of the most bizarre events known to American History. Over 100,000 people lined up along 165 miles of the Kansas border ready to take off and stake their claims in the Land Rush . Those Federal Marshals, railroad personnel, and others who were legally allowed in the territory before the shot fired at noon, starting the race into "
